In phase 1 we have a couple of extra spots available for Community* i4 M" ^, Y1 g) t1 q
Engagement Training.

1 G! b# a* _/ m$ H% ?We can accept a few people to join us this Friday (3~6 p.m.)and Saturday,' p( r* M! }# F; m, T* W# j
(9~3 p.m. ) to improve skills in building multicultural neighbourhood9 F; Z r; G# v F5 C
groups. We're especially focused on developing groups that can work
, g3 i$ T. l. P5 i6 M: y, Z$ {together across cultures to create community projects and Action for Healthy
- f- K: e; V1 }6 M3 ICommunities can often support these projects with funding of up to $1,000.

`: E W/ @+ U2 I) z9 K S! A2 WPacific, "Bougainville Sky" is the story of how music helped overcome years7 e `% F! c2 |5 g! z
of fear and distrust to rebuild peace in a war torn society. When bitter$ N$ z! l, N! U$ j* n2 P3 \
conflict on Bougainville Island ended in 1997, the combatants invited the
, M3 {) V2 |& q& j; V: B$ Iinternational community to send in a Peacekeeping force on one condition:6 m4 g1 w4 x2 l6 D9 {8 ^' S( y H
they come unarmed. Amongst the Peacekeepers was young Australian songwriter4 T0 N: Y4 g" |7 [" G- B
Iain Campbell Smith, whose music and radio program became a legend on the
/ ]+ M' k, x; S. @* Visland and contributed to the success of the world¹s first unarmed% Q; _% z8 t/ v$ f/ k. a4 U7 t
international peacekeeping operation.
1 K3 d3 q( N: q8 l4 K- U" P6 J) v
This beautifully shot film allows the Bougainvillean people to tell their
6 ^# w5 ^9 w: w8 A3 f+ V. Z( Oown story and captures the struggles, the strength and the humor of a people, s# H& }5 Y" o& O: f j* d v
who brought themselves back from the chaos of war. At a time when our TV% @3 l- u, p5 C) k \# _
screens are filled with images from the interventions in Iraq and/ q, q/ O. p# G$ J- _* {
Afghanistan, the success story of the Bougainville peace process seems
6 j* r9 k+ W* [( Y( B1 nimprobable: an unarmed international intervention fostering local customs
" l& k( W& ~- v0 j" A land music to strengthen an indigenous-run peace process < and it worked!
7 n& w4 @9 i7 i- O$ c1 L+ d, z9 H; e( f1 z
According to Smith "the fact that we were unarmed was critical to the! ?: S8 s+ ^ C2 E
success of the peace process in Bougainville. It set the tone for the whole
- l9 i0 W# m! Q! |" g! Y& X% [process, and put responsibility for the safety of the Peacekeepers in the# O& [$ T/ ~) V8 Z5 x$ ^ u8 _- _) ^
hands of the militants and the people, rather than the other way around.
3 `4 [; M+ H) E" z0 V2 c, EAlso, because we were unarmed we couldn't scare anyone into doing anything,) V7 |+ o% t4 T. t& C
so we learned to communicate instead. That's where music came in."
