I'd like to invite people to join our new Community Dialogue project.
' |, {: P% j1 d, W$ {/ \In phase 1 we have a couple of extra spots available for Community
$ @, \& B/ b. KEngagement Training./ Q. ?# y' d+ J& `. o
$ ]# z/ w. u; O5 `" c. h; ~
We can accept a few people to join us this Friday (3~6 p.m.)and Saturday,
5 h: {. ]* x4 ~6 Q. t& ~) p+ q+ D(9~3 p.m. ) to improve skills in building multicultural neighbourhood2 w& G/ k- j8 N" c1 ?: }
groups. We're especially focused on developing groups that can work
3 Q& S5 d$ n/ R% J+ e4 Mtogether across cultures to create community projects and Action for Healthy
2 S/ U' b1 D' E" ?9 GCommunities can often support these projects with funding of up to $1,000.$ t+ U8 x n" l B: t/ K( ~9 ?

Set on the remote Papua New Guinea Island of Bougainville in the South
! a6 }$ P! U2 H2 Q7 dPacific, "Bougainville Sky" is the story of how music helped overcome years; K8 O% r9 L* [4 N, C' l
of fear and distrust to rebuild peace in a war torn society. When bitter
9 e; x: m2 Q) Tconflict on Bougainville Island ended in 1997, the combatants invited the
; u& Y# K9 C) t* finternational community to send in a Peacekeeping force on one condition:+ e' Y4 r+ H& u' A
they come unarmed. Amongst the Peacekeepers was young Australian songwriter1 s1 z. N$ Z* o4 z* t. N
Iain Campbell Smith, whose music and radio program became a legend on the$ C# i' ^/ n: S0 S' ~
island and contributed to the success of the world¹s first unarmed
2 l- d. _* D' b3 [international peacekeeping operation.9 Q; s. L7 W1 `" v9 i+ r3 b' W4 R
. p8 q$ u- w( c8 p% F6 xThis beautifully shot film allows the Bougainvillean people to tell their
7 U3 a5 ?% N3 @# d! [own story and captures the struggles, the strength and the humor of a people9 ?$ F1 |' V `
who brought themselves back from the chaos of war. At a time when our TV) q/ S/ q/ T- u' g/ ?$ A
screens are filled with images from the interventions in Iraq and
2 {2 m A' S$ X( m# `" P/ S zAfghanistan, the success story of the Bougainville peace process seems
& p) n" J% J, ^9 z- dimprobable: an unarmed international intervention fostering local customs
3 q! M+ q1 @/ l' a, F% r- I8 P& @and music to strengthen an indigenous-run peace process < and it worked!
3 l' X5 \- E7 [4 P' W: S8 v& P
1 \. c9 F3 s* U) Z3 f! y" Z5 [According to Smith "the fact that we were unarmed was critical to the8 Z* e) `/ `. ~# ~ z
success of the peace process in Bougainville. It set the tone for the whole4 t: n! m; E3 {
process, and put responsibility for the safety of the Peacekeepers in the
, t# r! ^8 U5 ghands of the militants and the people, rather than the other way around.- @5 b0 I3 P- W9 X7 z% e' p
Also, because we were unarmed we couldn't scare anyone into doing anything,# _ i& D7 _% r1 g5 E3 b- ]1 C
so we learned to communicate instead. That's where music came in."
