I'd like to invite people to join our new Community Dialogue project.$ v+ }6 k! \ o
In phase 1 we have a couple of extra spots available for Community

% A' J+ j. X9 U+ J; ZWe can accept a few people to join us this Friday (3~6 p.m.)and Saturday,' q: ~# r- b: d4 ~8 l8 }, l. @
(9~3 p.m. ) to improve skills in building multicultural neighbourhood2 A+ Q$ g3 D3 m m( g
groups. We're especially focused on developing groups that can work. |' s) [: Z; O, b
together across cultures to create community projects and Action for Healthy
0 J2 H4 x/ Z( O1 S A! TCommunities can often support these projects with funding of up to $1,000.( M) E; D+ r) T. h- _) d; q) b

Set on the remote Papua New Guinea Island of Bougainville in the South. {2 ^! i% o* i
Pacific, "Bougainville Sky" is the story of how music helped overcome years+ u( ^7 z. r9 W
of fear and distrust to rebuild peace in a war torn society. When bitter3 c/ w$ h" [% I& W+ s- N; s% ^
conflict on Bougainville Island ended in 1997, the combatants invited the7 R- V' f6 F+ N7 K
international community to send in a Peacekeeping force on one condition:( F* Z' k; T, E2 K V9 _) x
they come unarmed. Amongst the Peacekeepers was young Australian songwriter
* O" m5 B. R2 d6 w, \Iain Campbell Smith, whose music and radio program became a legend on the
t+ u) ~& a( M7 B* v8 @ m! I( A+ lisland and contributed to the success of the world¹s first unarmed, s9 u+ h; P$ K/ H+ t7 Y+ G: y
international peacekeeping operation." I8 X/ q- I: p8 {8 {* u
0 J' l6 |2 r( d& x3 A4 VThis beautifully shot film allows the Bougainvillean people to tell their5 Z4 B6 G7 F/ ~% a; q
own story and captures the struggles, the strength and the humor of a people4 i0 o( ?) B( m- _
who brought themselves back from the chaos of war. At a time when our TV
7 B* D; f4 `, F& Z7 R$ J" dscreens are filled with images from the interventions in Iraq and$ p# ] X- n5 G6 F, g
Afghanistan, the success story of the Bougainville peace process seems
/ p g- L5 C! f4 H5 mimprobable: an unarmed international intervention fostering local customs9 a; D( y$ C' S+ Y' D6 h
and music to strengthen an indigenous-run peace process < and it worked!
# l4 n8 S* }$ ?: ]/ S2 m( A% ^% R+ t% r, W2 ~! `2 d1 A, O: d# G
According to Smith "the fact that we were unarmed was critical to the
8 T( X- J1 e% q" v$ n& ~success of the peace process in Bougainville. It set the tone for the whole/ Z0 J0 v) ?; U4 ?# s
process, and put responsibility for the safety of the Peacekeepers in the
2 B6 u5 G" F. e+ u0 ^hands of the militants and the people, rather than the other way around.! W6 A8 u" B- W$ Z `
Also, because we were unarmed we couldn't scare anyone into doing anything,7 P# t5 w1 h4 `9 s
so we learned to communicate instead. That's where music came in."
