I'd like to invite people to join our new Community Dialogue project.6 {9 I6 ]; b. f9 N! `! i
In phase 1 we have a couple of extra spots available for Community
6 s7 J( K+ k3 a+ C: VEngagement Training.
+ [0 t7 a7 n+ {8 v/ ^# w( F6 z) f8 l
4 f- w( S5 W; x4 |5 u W5 oWe can accept a few people to join us this Friday (3~6 p.m.)and Saturday,* t: K' D& f: k0 {6 \9 ^
(9~3 p.m. ) to improve skills in building multicultural neighbourhood" O: z; o! I; e8 z; k! R
groups. We're especially focused on developing groups that can work
/ h; p6 @4 d" ~0 _, Otogether across cultures to create community projects and Action for Healthy! p. L1 r$ C. l. Q
Communities can often support these projects with funding of up to $1,000.- r$ E- @/ u' J2 m4 ^

Set on the remote Papua New Guinea Island of Bougainville in the South
- k3 o0 a4 G+ X; wPacific, "Bougainville Sky" is the story of how music helped overcome years& O0 m" x/ [$ D# M4 L: Z9 B$ C8 n; J
of fear and distrust to rebuild peace in a war torn society. When bitter8 |7 v; E) f: @$ A- c
conflict on Bougainville Island ended in 1997, the combatants invited the
& x7 O3 q5 `" Q4 U( D' n7 H* ainternational community to send in a Peacekeeping force on one condition:
, y2 \5 g/ S* bthey come unarmed. Amongst the Peacekeepers was young Australian songwriter
% ]2 t$ m3 |; tIain Campbell Smith, whose music and radio program became a legend on the- k+ P, ^- K' T
island and contributed to the success of the world¹s first unarmed
, X5 o+ U9 ], X K0 @international peacekeeping operation.' T: J4 L4 b* e( }. G* d
" R) A& m- k* e0 E1 S0 Z+ y5 AThis beautifully shot film allows the Bougainvillean people to tell their; S5 b* a6 l$ l# [
own story and captures the struggles, the strength and the humor of a people
9 T0 v6 E; `# n J! f0 _who brought themselves back from the chaos of war. At a time when our TV
9 W$ d* i1 c, ]2 B+ M( p) ?, `" Oscreens are filled with images from the interventions in Iraq and
, f2 f+ j$ T2 U3 m/ p, F8 C. lAfghanistan, the success story of the Bougainville peace process seems
) ^2 N7 @6 J7 P/ E# F, Cimprobable: an unarmed international intervention fostering local customs
! Z+ I5 m [: [7 C$ Vand music to strengthen an indigenous-run peace process < and it worked!2 }7 I& a8 p2 m5 ]: r7 [
6 O* \% t: V2 tAccording to Smith "the fact that we were unarmed was critical to the" J( {* c) [% g
success of the peace process in Bougainville. It set the tone for the whole6 ], u' T; _% U5 F7 _
process, and put responsibility for the safety of the Peacekeepers in the) B6 \5 \# j2 o( m1 p1 W: ]/ [
hands of the militants and the people, rather than the other way around.
; U. P7 V7 d7 U* OAlso, because we were unarmed we couldn't scare anyone into doing anything,- A2 x |- G+ N$ d9 d0 {, D& x; {$ v
so we learned to communicate instead. That's where music came in."
