$ }4 e( m" {6 g! `* X/ i CHis wife of 70 years recently passed away, making the move necessary. : ]% ]+ \/ X/ Y/ a
After many hours of waiting patiently in the lobby of the nursing home, / F8 U0 u' J7 p- a/ R( [8 T3 {
he smiled sweetly when told his room was ready. 5 ]! j6 v& a" R' O$ D) C9 J
% ^9 B. O7 G; bAs he maneuvered his walker to the elevator, I provided a visual 9 m z& o; V" @' q7 F$ j0 E
description of his tiny room, including the eyelet sheets that had been

"I love it," he stated with the enthusiasm of an eight-year-old having $ u6 ?) }7 F/ @2 E
just been presented with a new puppy. 6 X2 ]) p Z+ e+ k( o
$ w! e1 n- T: M( ?8 M"Mr. Jones, you haven't seen the room; just wait."

"That doesn't have anything to do with it," he replied. # d- C0 b0 Q* f/ @3 s* f

"Happiness is something you decide on ahead of time. Whether I like my 5 y7 k, p! d* E8 Z6 k0 `
room or not doesn't depend on how the furniture is arranged ... it's how
8 P/ P# d$ {( Y4 b: f6 l/ S% M3 J" E5 tI arrange my mind. I already decided to love it."

' s+ S& l: p; F( kIt's a decision I make every morning when I wake up.

+ j- R' E$ E3 DI have a choice; I can spend the day in bed recounting the difficulty I
e# O. ^# Z0 R( }have with the parts of my body that no longer work, or get out of bed % B- q: p/ I7 w0 L! ^8 H, l
and be thankful for the ones that do.

) V6 G8 f9 u" ~% z/ KEach day is a gift, and as long as my eyes open I'll focus on the new z8 P7 q5 e j/ B5 R) c
day and all the happy memories I've stored away. + A8 j1 b( e% `8 f

Just for this time in my life.

7 P! a! F& k3 Q" v; F* v& pOld age is like a bank account. You withdraw from what you've put in.
