am conducting a study titled, “Language, Self-Recognition and Attachment Development: Possible pathways”,
' x/ e1 u2 E: r$ u$ T0 h- yconcerning babies between 6- and 18- months of age. The purpose of the study is to understand how language and1 y: l6 Z- }3 K0 x$ X8 Y0 X
attachment are related. For example, we want to know if babies that are good at relating to people around them
3 w8 I; |) R+ ?9 }. ]& Rwill acquire language earlier and faster.6 H5 `& M) A$ P( i/ w& O: @
% r( [4 ]$ g' F4 Q b9 W3 Y7 ]
In order to find out, we will videotape you and your baby during a free play situation for approximately* x5 K. ]0 X, w6 E
30 minutes, at 6, 9, and 12 months of age. We know that babies are unpredictable so if you would like us to stop
. S* X, E* w, lvideotaping even after we have arrived, we will do so immediately. We can either reschedule for another day or
; \ E( o) b8 ?! Dsimply skip this visit. Every visit, we will ask if we may contact you again for the next visit’s videotaping: you8 |8 D. v3 Y* K4 X, x. e" {% L
may say no at any time. In the video we will look for cues your baby might use in order to learn words. If your
! {6 Q' T% s t: ^1 f, @! @7 ~baby starts speaking before 12 months, we will note down the words used.
& R, K3 h, T/ @ e" L' `2 X- [' @4 [6 U J6 [; t4 I' l
At 6, 9 and 12 months, we will also ask you to fill out a brief questionnaire with infants’ common
1 d' m2 a: s/ @5 F1 Ebehaviors. You will chose in a scale from 1 to 7 those behaviors that are more descriptive of your baby (7) and" g3 M9 \7 w W1 @, q H
those that a least descriptive (1). This should last about 15 minutes. X. Z8 H. X$ r" k1 V7 n" w, |
0 M- [$ w t5 J* [. t) g- _Starting in the age of 9 months, we you ask you to take note of any word your baby might spontaneously
- }) \# K8 _ Oproduce. And at 9, 12 and 18 months of age, we will ask you to mark from a list of words any words your baby
! c O2 H2 _' [6 fknows. We will also give you index cards with infants’ common behaviors and ask you to sort them according to; z5 K* w2 x" g" H
those behaviors that are more like your baby’s own behaviors. It should take around 30 minutes." I4 b4 d9 |# [' I& c6 z# L
6 P3 B" ]( S W' b4 N- h `& qFinally, at 12 and 18 months we will measure your son/daughter language through a standard test. In this,
& v# C/ f/ Y1 h, G3 q* \the child will basically point to pictures and nominate objects.5 e0 m" T4 B. @# t# b5 f
* x; P- J3 q( \8 i: vThe entire study will take maximum twelve months. You will receive a DVD with all the recordings done
$ I8 ~% H( \( Z+ gover the course of the study. In the future, we would like to visit you and your baby one more time, when he/she
% M5 O. N9 B: F" t G1 ?5 Tis 24-month old, when we will measure the child’s vocabulary and language development. This last session will1 @7 u6 X& d# I4 F
take about 30 minutes. If we may contact you to see if you are willing to do this follow-up session, please indicate# O& I# e) X# v2 {1 h
on the next page. If we contact you later on, you may always decide that you no longer wish to participate.5 l1 {8 W6 z7 r7 T" g5 J1 o$ p
As a default, all videos and computer files are only accessible to those involved in the research. The data& y Y, x3 r( B7 N+ @
are stored in a room at the University, with access limited to lab personnel. If you are willing to allow us to show
$ B1 G0 `$ b. A/ M }video clips of you and your baby to scientific audiences, please indicate on the next page. No names will be used! n' D0 [0 v+ N
in the storing or presenting of information, only codes. The data will be kept for a minimum of five years and
6 \+ D- }: w! u4 b" Z6 Fdestroyed when no longer in use. The anonymous coded results will be used for research articles, presentations, ?$ |3 o; l0 s/ N3 @7 @$ n
and teaching. Research assistants will comply with the University of Alberta Standards for the Protection of
0 x$ l) z" J8 F5 THuman Research. You are also able to end participation at any time up until we publish the results in scientific
( h2 X: G5 H* |# kjournals without any repercussions. It is worth to noticed that there is no direct benefits or risks to both the child
