I am Elena Nicoladis, a researcher at the University of Alberta. With graduate student Poliana Barbosa, I
8 v& \6 W* b$ |am conducting a study titled, “Language, Self-Recognition and Attachment Development: Possible pathways”,- k" \$ g7 G* |5 ]# p0 i6 b) A
concerning babies between 6- and 18- months of age. The purpose of the study is to understand how language and
8 H0 [8 {; |- _/ u% V/ g3 S( Tattachment are related. For example, we want to know if babies that are good at relating to people around them
, k5 i- o. F5 Y3 _- ?3 {will acquire language earlier and faster.: X, C) E4 ^3 c" P& A- M: d" f
8 ~, a4 Z! B3 p' lIn order to find out, we will videotape you and your baby during a free play situation for approximately( K+ n9 q8 m: |' l7 D% o
30 minutes, at 6, 9, and 12 months of age. We know that babies are unpredictable so if you would like us to stop8 N4 A: y R3 f# T$ ^
videotaping even after we have arrived, we will do so immediately. We can either reschedule for another day or# t2 k2 @0 H4 C
simply skip this visit. Every visit, we will ask if we may contact you again for the next visit’s videotaping: you, l2 z" C: U9 Z- r9 B# _0 _
may say no at any time. In the video we will look for cues your baby might use in order to learn words. If your
0 i) X" }5 v8 T9 h: ]- Dbaby starts speaking before 12 months, we will note down the words used.

At 6, 9 and 12 months, we will also ask you to fill out a brief questionnaire with infants’ common
4 C* c2 l3 M/ K' d# f$ V- h, p1 ]8 ybehaviors. You will chose in a scale from 1 to 7 those behaviors that are more descriptive of your baby (7) and
, F+ A0 O# O. _8 _8 Y3 j, Jthose that a least descriptive (1). This should last about 15 minutes.2 g( O8 v2 H1 E0 ~
! j2 ]& |) P8 x8 VStarting in the age of 9 months, we you ask you to take note of any word your baby might spontaneously! N( @' d6 s2 x' V- K) F
produce. And at 9, 12 and 18 months of age, we will ask you to mark from a list of words any words your baby
! K: Z+ o3 x" Y" hknows. We will also give you index cards with infants’ common behaviors and ask you to sort them according to
k& L' b2 }: ~those behaviors that are more like your baby’s own behaviors. It should take around 30 minutes.

Finally, at 12 and 18 months we will measure your son/daughter language through a standard test. In this,9 Q5 H! `4 x- r/ K
the child will basically point to pictures and nominate objects.

The entire study will take maximum twelve months. You will receive a DVD with all the recordings done
8 h) c% X# k# s# H: ?+ tover the course of the study. In the future, we would like to visit you and your baby one more time, when he/she7 l/ q8 [6 r0 ?8 w& X J8 Q
is 24-month old, when we will measure the child’s vocabulary and language development. This last session will
5 @( u: O9 X0 }( K6 m! Z* r s6 N7 ?take about 30 minutes. If we may contact you to see if you are willing to do this follow-up session, please indicate8 n2 R j' S+ P
on the next page. If we contact you later on, you may always decide that you no longer wish to participate.8 O0 H. n5 _+ ^ l) k4 P
As a default, all videos and computer files are only accessible to those involved in the research. The data5 W ]. f9 w. @8 B4 ~
are stored in a room at the University, with access limited to lab personnel. If you are willing to allow us to show
/ D6 z7 C% G/ Fvideo clips of you and your baby to scientific audiences, please indicate on the next page. No names will be used8 v5 v5 p$ v: @) S
in the storing or presenting of information, only codes. The data will be kept for a minimum of five years and8 i# v1 ]6 d' `* X
destroyed when no longer in use. The anonymous coded results will be used for research articles, presentations,- q4 w5 ~9 j+ j2 z( p: ?) W
and teaching. Research assistants will comply with the University of Alberta Standards for the Protection of q d! y- O/ Y7 @$ a1 H$ L0 f
Human Research. You are also able to end participation at any time up until we publish the results in scientific" L- R0 G+ t! O9 q! H' J% m
journals without any repercussions. It is worth to noticed that there is no direct benefits or risks to both the child/ W- A: J( s* k% q$ R7 ?
and the parents participating in this study.
