新建房车库地面装地漏的必要性和费用

又下雪了，车子开进车库，会有好多雪水化在车库地面，流的哪都是，还往墙根儿流。

新建房子，车库可以选择装个下水的地漏，在水泥地面的正中间，地面四周都向中间形成坡度。这样，雪化水就都流到中间进下水道了。费用是7,8百刀，值不值得呢？要是7,8十刀，就不用考虑了。

如果不装地漏，车库地面是向车库门方向有坡度的，水会流向门那边，会不会把门冻住哇？另外，横向是没有坡度的，雪水还会往墙根儿那边流吗？

Bingo. Except it doesn't always start outside the door. Or more accurately, it doesn't always stay outside the door. It often dams up right underneath the door, so the door doesn't go all the way to the floor, and therefore, it doesn't seal at the top either.

I vote for the drain.

We put in a large floor drain in our garage and i definately am glad we did.

With the snow you get in Edmonton like here in Thunder Bay it makes it so easy to keep the floor clean and dry.

We have in floor heat which also helps. Just use a floor squeegie to push the snow and water into the grate and then hose the floor down.

Keeps the garage a lot cleaner.

definitely do it. I wish I did. my garage is 32' deep and there isnt much slope to carry the water (from snow melting off cars) towards the door. So I have standing water in the winter. And the bottoms of my garage doors are rusting because the floor slopes toward the door. When I push the water out the door it freezes on the driveway.

I would recommend that the drain have a sump in the bottom to collect dirt, etc to prevent the pipe from clogging

Put one in mine....... But only on the side I will wash in. Other side is level for a lift.

I like that style of drain over the standard round one. Looks great. My floor with round drains has too much pitch to it now for my tastes (makes leveling equipment in there a challenge)

I heard it is not allowed anymore to connect to the main drain unless it is only a pit in which water and dirt stay and not going anywhere, so it has to be cleaned at regular intervals.

Then maybe just drain it outside of garage. Frozen might be a problem?

Not sure where this poster is talking about though:

my brother has one in his garage which is above a garage turned into an office. the drain ran throught the office to the exterior wall and than out to where it drained onto the lower driveway. i talked to a plumber about running to the sewer system for the house due to ice problems on the driveway. he said without an oil/water seperator that i couldn't do it according to code. just a little info for ya'll

It simply said it is not allowed by code as I have heard. All kind of oil and auto chemicals will go to the sewer system if the floor drain is connected to it.

Good point!

I don't think this is allowed......it needs to be a closed system. Too many people would be doing oil changes over it and.....then we know around Edmonton where it would end up.

The reason being, even if you don't do oil changes in there, it's a garage and there is a good chance you will have some type of hazardous fluids stored and used in there sometime. Let's say you are just filling up your lawnmower with gas and happen to knock the jerry can over, there is potential for contamination there.

Another scenario, you decide to sell your house, a realtor (or the prospective buyer) notices this and could question it is a (environmental) liability since they have no idea how long or what has washed down there. It may be up to you to then prove the ground under it is in fact clean, which could get expensive.

My concern is adding water saturation issues to the ground under the pad. May cause erosion, may cause expansion of clays, may work it's way to the basement.

Sounds like you just hate the water dripping from the car as the snow melts. My wife bought a heavy duty floor squeegee from home depot. Works great and keep the garage floor drier and cleaner.

Not true actually, at least in Calgary. I have a floor drain in my garage that ties directly to the city sewer. This isn't something I installed but was installed by the builder so I'm assuming it's legit.

Garage drains are tied into the municipal sewer system, where it is away and treated. It isn't an open system leaching into the ground.

I really wish I had installed a drain. my floor is level with no drain and the snow melting off my truck made a heck of a mess last year. I have got to figure out a better plan for this year. I am putting in a concrete slab in front of the door so I can at least keep the snow scooped away from the door and squeegee the water out this year but I want to figure a way to put in a drain. any ideas?

Floor drains are required by most plumbing codes to be connected to the building drainage system and building sewer. They are required to be trapped and vented.Minimum size is 2".Vents must be installed within 8 feet of the trap.Consult your local plumbing code office for details.

When we build our new house, I want to install a floor drain for the garage to handle snow melt from the vehicles. Since I will also be using a heavy floor gasket under the garage doors (as a weather seal) water will pool to the inside if I don't drain it. I have this very problem in my current home. The door seal works too well!

My question - can I connect this drain to the footer drain outside (at the garage footing)? It will exit to daylight.

Short answer, yes. In fact, a lot of jurisdictions (mine included) would require you daylight it rather than connecting to the sanitary sewer. Snow melt is stormwater, plus the added sand, and possible fluids from vehicles, don't want those in the sanitary system.

I would suggest you contact the AHJ. 5 years ago, our response would have been exactly as Fatboy's. Now - we require that drain into the sewer, precisely so we CAN take those fluids to the sanitary system, rather than allow it to enter the storm drainage system (can you say EPA?). If the garage is anything other than residential - grease/sand interceptor required.

I just heard back from the local authorities, turns out I can connect the drain to either the footing drain (to daylight) or to the sanitary. If fact he told me that a drain was "required" if I did not slope the floor. Since I'm doing both (drain & slope) I should be good to go. I will use the footing drain since I do not want to contaminate my septic with road salt.

Again, what's the difference between having a floor drain that daylights, or a floor that slopes to the door, that will still reach the curb/gutter. storm drainage system?

I agree with fatboy. I'll be sitting about in the middle of well sloped (avg 15% grade) forested area. My well will be well over 250' from where this exits to daylight. No streams or creeks. There is a pond about 1000' ft away from the planned "daylight". I am not a mechanic, no plans to be a mechanic. My brother-in-law is and he will be just a couple of miles away.

Anyone have any links to an oil separator so I can check them out. My quick search just turned up commercial sized separators.

一定要在车库里加地漏,　今天早上下雨,地上都是冰.出去一趟车上全是泥,　回来时把车停在drive way 上,　想先冲下车,拎了一桶水,　刚出来,　人还没站稳一下坐了个大屁股墩,桶也摔出去好远.　半天才起来.　然后把车开进车库,　在车库里暖暖的,　稳稳的把车冲干净了.　从这个角度来讲有地漏真好.
