You never know

One day, when I was a freshman in high school,- H5 h, P: E4 E! Z; ?

1 g  m% x" V! ]  HI saw a kid from my class was walking home from school.  ^! Y4 V  X2 e1 J/ |/ }% e5 D

" G' b( l) p" q- gHis name was Kyle.
, A3 A2 a- S' J! a- y# l' H$ S* C, ~: k
It looked like he was carrying all of his& ~* V9 P) b: i4 Q- g
Books.2 r0 r9 V% B* M9 Z) j' T

- z" G8 Q% ]5 I, Z0 w7 sI thought to myself, "Why would anyone bring home all his books on a Friday?
. @+ r3 c1 b8 s5 H, `  a" l! J& @
8 w8 ]% z( ]/ ]7 a8 uHe must really be a nerd."* W( ]+ V! o# W: q1 k" I; S% @1 Y

; r% ?! P) j9 u* mI had quite a weekend planned (parties and a football game with my friends tomorrow afternoon), so I shrugged my shoulders and went on.& k; p. z& j6 f/ {
' L) Z" c0 s; y: ~4 F5 C
As I was walking, I saw a bunch of kids running toward him.
$ z( A$ Y# F! M2 n1 q; J. e1 P' Z5 Y/ C
They ran at him, knocking all his books out of his arms and tripping him so he landed in the dirt.
% z5 T7 |0 J+ p1 }& \
6 I0 n8 W6 q' a+ g- i: }0 LHis glasses went flying, and I saw them land in the grass about ten feet from him.
4 |: u  g4 P  y  U' K( ?, ]: i- C0 w% T! f, {# Y' a
He looked up and I saw this terrible sadness in his eyes2 M5 g( }/ S- q) r) ]0 X; Y
5 C' Y# [7 i$ j. ?* g$ Z
My heart went out to him. So, I jogged over to him and as he crawled around looking for his glasses, and I saw a tear in his eye.3 }0 }1 E/ L  t3 m) Z9 ~) ~
. C* F( Y4 u) m! M
As I handed him his glasses, I said, "Those guys are jerks.: Y) ^  I& {: t( ~! T6 ]

+ x* g; e- k3 z4 h" R6 kThey really should get lives.) T2 e) u5 z: [$ l! t# W7 |

. q8 V: Q1 I# a) x0 {7 Z" ~" He looked at me and said, "Hey thanks!"
  u' G( Q6 j# Y. S7 m$ y8 s0 O
, R. X; T3 _2 |3 R8 q! jThere was a big smile on his face." _) d5 `$ Q) r% J8 X0 R5 W9 t
+ K1 A8 @+ R/ r  x* g- \4 d
It was one of those smiles that showed real gratitude.
/ B0 Q% ^( n$ t" f! p, ~
4 [7 P0 N$ q/ s6 p- y6 f  D* QI helped him pick up his books, and asked him where he lived.
/ p( l7 `0 z# s- e
5 x/ r/ G/ f4 q" O6 qAs it turned out, he lived near me, so I asked him why I had never seen him before.9 ]5 Q& S0 ?3 O) r( d* O0 L

' Q" N% p3 q6 ^! p4 W, @( w& KHe said he had gone to private school before now.7 d# M* T* J+ B& Q  t* ], ?
; C9 i# `' A6 H4 }0 s& ~- S
I would have never hung out with a private school kid before.: R  T' Z2 G3 w9 P
$ U; O# i6 W: H  [3 j: s
We talked all the way home, and I carried some of his books.
! z0 v; a  y# S& Y) @  o. c2 V. C0 S
He turned out to be a pretty cool kid.
- v/ J- D! y* L; Q8 m6 G  y- q
I asked him if he wanted to play a little football with my friends.5 g8 B0 C& T( e. q- f

& u' E2 B* s, l4 cHe said yes.
: u4 s% s" M3 _3 R$ C' _9 U/ q+ V# u8 B5 t8 @! R
We hung out all weekend and the more I got to know Kyle, the more I liked him, and my friends thought the same of him.& N3 b4 ?" n# b. H8 f% C6 E# ~; [

4 h4 g5 M" t% V" o7 m7 yMonday morning came, and there was Kyle with the huge stack of books again.* @9 D) x; C* d. {, w
' C5 k5 a1 ~! {8 F9 i
I stopped him and said, "Boy, you are gonna really build some serious muscles with this pile of books everyday!. |: A6 d- @: u  c

# S1 p0 {" D3 {3 `9 Y4 I( G$ ^" He just laughed and handed me half the books.$ l" _1 U' t4 s5 J8 G/ U# c( J

& q0 u& E: |% gOver the next four years, Kyle and I became best friends.
! j4 y7 i# i6 n* ?, D$ f
& s6 R& g9 }0 G9 w" y4 r* ~When we were seniors, we began to think  \8 w2 B; T* l( q7 d* Y2 C
About college.
# m& j; A1 ~7 i- d% m* V7 A* r4 D6 B8 W. s8 k+ }$ L
Kyle decided on Georgetown, and I
1 c; l. e4 g0 D: J; r8 @& Q7 n- kWas going to Duke.
+ @6 b( l' ]* }4 a3 h; A7 U3 ^. [& `2 f
I knew that we would always be friends, that the miles would never be a problem.
* e+ a$ l- z: E5 H9 ~6 S( v7 G, M% R6 z0 _8 a/ J" ^; O
He was going to be a doctor, and I was going for business on a football scholarship.) G9 c  l6 ^) V6 U8 G+ }
6 f, c) Z+ y) [. ^( W# c* L
Kyle was valedictorian of our class.
1 g' v' u, G2 I2 _
) ]& p  R1 X. N/ ~% wI teased him all the time about being a nerd.* c% b9 `- l3 `9 D- {. b5 h
/ Y: ?' _1 D5 Z2 F
He had to prepare a speech for graduation.  X* C, A" y' u% W( a  L6 k0 {6 b
' Y: L6 V1 `' T
I was so glad it wasn't me having to get up there and speak
3 z! t* u: \. T( x, T1 m) r! S+ L
8 c; P, ^$ S+ e1 `9 B  m- u7 IGraduation day, I saw Kyle.
; K/ ]: f3 A8 x& c- m0 t6 k
9 b. X8 @7 |& L. I# c" L* _6 R4 j. dHe looked great.
( _1 k6 M- @+ ^: u7 o
- D+ _4 K* ?# V) Y8 {! gHe was one of those guys that really found himself during high school.! D' T2 H) ^- N" d3 |
5 e' J! K( L4 V% Y$ c2 u
He filled out and actually looked good in glasses.  \# i0 x6 h3 @2 m* ]

! e! P+ X2 e/ \5 k3 x. zHe had more dates than I had and all the girls loved him.) [& w& U& I3 r7 e" U- b

- W! e) d6 l/ e) g& fBoy, sometimes I was jealous.
/ B. ]8 c! ?% c6 T/ l  K" j- b% V4 H8 e/ w
Today was one of those days.
6 I- Y1 v4 f/ b0 s9 Z9 S
; `$ `& G9 m4 B- ~+ c$ PI could see that he was nervous about his speech.
8 \  v/ T, c1 f6 i8 ~1 A6 a! `
& n! Q3 O# F) k* `, A: fSo, I smacked him on the back and said, "Hey, big guy, you'll be great!"
$ i2 p7 @, s6 i9 J
7 ?$ m- w' K0 W; `  ]1 }& e6 [9 nHe looked at me with one of those looks (the really grateful one) and smiled." ]( o9 q( R* Z- L

! `' {+ N0 ]7 G"Thanks," he said.
- ]% y% v3 T  K1 |- }4 Z6 G
- D0 D' h6 y% ?( e3 U6 v3 ^As he started his speech, he cleared his throat, and began; @+ O) S5 c5 @) H( X( u6 D

& Q$ ~  t5 T! W. E6 s+ d, T0 R2 q5 o"Graduation is a time to thank those who helped you make it through those tough years.
! i$ F# v9 Q$ |6 I% A4 H9 V8 h; C& A
Your parents, your teachers, your siblings, maybe a coach...but mostly your friends...0 a4 [& x% S& p0 T% l& R  |
4 Z6 R; x$ L& N
I am here to tell all of you that being a7 ^, B0 H* P$ ?3 F: x: ~: w
Friend to someone is the best gift you can give them.& q. c# h1 Q: o% f3 K6 Z
. C/ Z: W% W7 R: }# q* P* g& j
I am going to tell you a story."
/ Z5 N4 {4 w+ x( C* a0 v1 X2 K+ @/ ]9 K5 U/ P* C
I just looked at my friend with disbelief as he told the story of the first day we met.! \5 ~5 ^: K, j1 z5 E/ C1 Z" r, K
4 W; ?9 V, m2 O" n# N5 _; K+ s$ {
He had planned to kill himself over the weekend." t0 V+ ^( ?" E/ ^

4 G9 d5 z* L8 J2 D2 T! m! ?He talked of how he had cleaned out his locker so his Mom wouldn't have to do it later and was carrying his stuff home.. B" J* _! N: m' S5 R: f" s

. Z: F$ L* G% p  t% c8 a: o1 @He looked hard at me and gave me a little smile.& I" H) |: h; H- O: Y) g6 i2 e' r
/ V! S' @, t9 @3 S  i* c! Y$ L1 v
"Thankfully, I was saved.
* S: k7 W) d9 X9 `) q
7 ?) d- C+ m, K: F2 QMy friend saved me from doing the unspeakable."1 q1 f& F6 t3 s# m3 ~8 K

2 y9 L9 z2 u4 _: ]! V1 cI heard the gasp go through the crowd as this handsome, popular boy told us all about his weakest moment.$ ?3 C9 T% X7 G8 b% z0 `
4 ^5 i8 |  `3 k9 K0 @0 @
I saw his Mom and dad looking at me and smiling that same grateful smile.6 O% K3 N1 W/ q
& x/ w; ^* D3 Y+ P$ V8 q
Not until that moment did I realize it's depth.  E( x8 H$ D, Y! B5 r
& p5 h/ G+ X- B* s. t
Never underestimate the power of your actions./ R# K! I  W2 G1 i: |6 d
4 l# ?" m# o/ M1 m6 Q+ C
With one small gesture you can change a person's life.7 \: C$ W7 U' Q
  Z* Q" Q- Y$ O2 ^0 C' x4 E4 }- h
For better or for worse.
, H7 J! n; X; k+ w3 e% [" F2 a
  g9 ?+ J8 a8 n2 {# W) w% vGod puts us all in each other's lives to impact one another in some way.1 o# f4 \. F0 h, x% C

& L9 @' {- H- a0 \5 e6 ]Look for God in others.
7 C8 G6 A5 r! S  ]7 N2 A/ k  J1 {% ~* E: R& `5 \3 s4 t
You now have two choices, you can:
! q' `- N4 n3 y/ F8 T9 ^
- @: h; \- v) `3 c" T1 u9 O1) Pass this on to your friends or
( j, `  T, W# l. M$ F" D: _2 j
  G9 W8 N7 a, H/ y$ ~2) Delete it and act like it didn't touch your heart.

0 c9 L2 R( I3 y1 uAs you can see, I took choice number 1.
* Z2 w. ?! d: I& m$ u, e"Friends are angels who lift us to our feet when our wings have trouble remembering how to fly."8 p4 e4 N4 z# Q- f8 u7 D( G# U$ p
: D# y+ s' R' i4 j
There is no beginning or end.. Yesterday is history.& M# S4 D6 r6 B' k1 O

) l* }% g% u8 a% ?5 nTomorrow is mystery.* a. M. a3 K5 Y! \" M/ a( I

7 q5 r! f- A  r; G' L" P6 @Today is a gift.1 \0 Q4 |& N# ~+ R1 d- m7 v* L
