You never know

One day, when I was a freshman in high school,0 T6 I3 Z* s, N$ y" B" x$ O

) ~* z  j- p/ B2 q0 \% c" tI saw a kid from my class was walking home from school.) ?& }$ s, X/ @9 h, w3 n3 M
4 O( @3 b& ?9 q, K4 |
His name was Kyle.
# K. t7 d% q% S# G
) }1 c2 v, t7 j8 }$ XIt looked like he was carrying all of his" g) D7 h- N; f8 m$ v+ P. [
Books.
1 A# H- a0 k, Z9 u0 |" C
  L  |9 e* g" |1 lI thought to myself, "Why would anyone bring home all his books on a Friday?( w* B( y" g# n' \

. _/ u% w$ d  w& L: O; d9 aHe must really be a nerd."- z& l# M2 k9 T' \+ k9 t
1 \/ `1 F2 }; {8 L" {
I had quite a weekend planned (parties and a football game with my friends tomorrow afternoon), so I shrugged my shoulders and went on.
1 S- b/ H1 b- q# z- p$ X( ^- A8 s9 B. y8 \' H
As I was walking, I saw a bunch of kids running toward him.
* B* p% s9 W! R9 @& m% w3 S
' w8 _3 `/ H9 z! b6 j7 CThey ran at him, knocking all his books out of his arms and tripping him so he landed in the dirt.
# ~* e" [7 G2 o0 I) R, N
, t# F7 S8 d  HHis glasses went flying, and I saw them land in the grass about ten feet from him.
' u' _  I+ X: m& w5 n
% p5 e* o7 B$ qHe looked up and I saw this terrible sadness in his eyes
* P8 n. b# T8 c( S) w# w5 C( c. Y  f0 S- e; Z
My heart went out to him. So, I jogged over to him and as he crawled around looking for his glasses, and I saw a tear in his eye.

, y0 \$ ]# p8 m' }$ UAs I handed him his glasses, I said, "Those guys are jerks." v1 ?' d- ?! [& v; x! @

/ v; J! M) D6 l. j! eThey really should get lives.) P! l) y# H) c: n6 Q% }% v4 t. y

  k* ~- s4 h# b8 g" He looked at me and said, "Hey thanks!"
9 ^  B$ {. R* N2 _2 F0 `! l& J6 W6 o) ~# T
There was a big smile on his face.
2 R# i5 l' f1 t: h( u+ a) L. I2 z' b1 q8 U
It was one of those smiles that showed real gratitude.
1 j+ `) ^$ I& ]( `! F: U. x2 U* Z9 P9 S  a; i
I helped him pick up his books, and asked him where he lived.
. F+ _$ e4 j+ U% h7 Z
6 y+ C5 [7 y* c& m  T' x) iAs it turned out, he lived near me, so I asked him why I had never seen him before.3 f3 j5 K2 A7 ?& p7 J9 p$ C4 t

' h: h  X0 \3 b8 N# Q) |" |He said he had gone to private school before now.$ k0 A8 x; S0 x) s+ ]' w" I' M% U

$ {! A9 G7 r+ [I would have never hung out with a private school kid before.6 g& ?6 v6 Y! [" y+ v' a& I

& o9 [4 @$ Y7 u6 aWe talked all the way home, and I carried some of his books.2 W) k" z6 p3 R5 b5 l( q
. ^( d, X/ x+ i5 G
He turned out to be a pretty cool kid.
0 O, ^4 [% x3 B' k, K
* M4 u( n( L' l" \I asked him if he wanted to play a little football with my friends.# `4 N* |( P( n
/ P  W- ?% ^9 U$ t" d! I( Y
He said yes.
! G& I; ^  m; H* c7 ]( e' a- j: ^- d! A  w$ c9 |3 u8 k3 ~5 G
We hung out all weekend and the more I got to know Kyle, the more I liked him, and my friends thought the same of him.
4 A2 J0 z% _. B  g' R9 Y: x# Z) n6 s
Monday morning came, and there was Kyle with the huge stack of books again.1 g5 x( K* K; B

( Y* _$ B  e! T8 L% WI stopped him and said, "Boy, you are gonna really build some serious muscles with this pile of books everyday!, V- G: V$ h7 e4 {5 X: A" ?
9 e! u& W' D: X0 B
" He just laughed and handed me half the books.9 }  Z  K6 F' [
4 G, E& p9 e# t" ?+ Q" O+ h
Over the next four years, Kyle and I became best friends.5 G. y; l0 B  d( E0 v: z3 ^! \5 g
% b7 Y3 m+ l7 ~  H9 t
When we were seniors, we began to think8 ]+ p2 {0 X: A& X7 b. P  R
About college.
( Y6 {& r! \* {! m1 W2 `9 z& D; X
6 ?9 E, _) m$ k% eKyle decided on Georgetown, and I
- e2 [6 g- G2 d& p; r: O1 ~Was going to Duke.5 R8 j% B5 \+ Z: S3 T: u$ B
; Y1 S" L7 p4 R+ G3 t( T- K
I knew that we would always be friends, that the miles would never be a problem.
$ F1 c; k: x9 L$ C
) @$ X8 Y) G! LHe was going to be a doctor, and I was going for business on a football scholarship.
- H  |0 P9 O7 l! ~% X- G' r/ N6 D2 {- e$ x2 B; W8 Q
Kyle was valedictorian of our class.
5 ]8 f% F4 J+ L
( ]/ m. D4 f* P/ {' s7 o* GI teased him all the time about being a nerd.  @) u  L' G6 P5 T3 l2 X

8 q4 G2 @" p! w8 }% O4 b2 a& eHe had to prepare a speech for graduation.7 o$ N/ ^7 g  q5 R% _7 }& y

- w) v$ S& ~& u& d; f6 A1 `7 O& i& II was so glad it wasn't me having to get up there and speak) Y$ N- p  F- w# P' r# l
) H3 v# E2 ]! o+ l3 D. ^( r
Graduation day, I saw Kyle.$ p* W# v! b# F; W* j0 ]. ^
( e; I; g& [# L6 p
He looked great." m  H0 Q& O0 u

# j+ P* y  N8 W# u8 }  _He was one of those guys that really found himself during high school., T% f# [  O" G" q, M
+ g* n& J/ X; h( |  Q6 L( T
He filled out and actually looked good in glasses.! [% k% _+ l# x. e1 a

! y; T9 Q9 K, u, fHe had more dates than I had and all the girls loved him.* n) ]' k8 `- J/ v6 l

) M" N- J/ T7 V, b' _) LBoy, sometimes I was jealous.% Q8 g( j: L. b/ s! F

# ?  M3 h$ `2 S; lToday was one of those days.
1 W7 T0 y6 P! E! ^4 }! s! m$ [+ v8 Q" I& k# {1 f" k! r& A: u+ t2 [
I could see that he was nervous about his speech.: R  @3 V# m& @' {
- m# I, F+ l+ b9 W: w
So, I smacked him on the back and said, "Hey, big guy, you'll be great!"
  E9 }/ F& V% y9 a5 {& c9 P+ M5 b# L% V+ B+ S2 ~
He looked at me with one of those looks (the really grateful one) and smiled.
8 [3 d* m% F; g- p& ~% n2 \* M% c" A) x- M- N, x6 p
"Thanks," he said.0 w1 U& n7 K7 v1 ~& ~4 @1 G

( C( T  B8 b& ~$ D2 g$ mAs he started his speech, he cleared his throat, and began
% d' ^+ P1 g9 x8 ]2 L4 I7 L0 u( V3 y
"Graduation is a time to thank those who helped you make it through those tough years., [3 o* @; i. Q/ Q( q

. z, j" L, ~! E. o9 y" |4 J: pYour parents, your teachers, your siblings, maybe a coach...but mostly your friends...1 X# Y/ Q  h; n7 I7 O, r
; e* Z$ T6 {* R& {2 b
I am here to tell all of you that being a; W1 p: g5 l4 l
Friend to someone is the best gift you can give them./ e: O4 X  V) b& d& n8 r. M5 j8 K

& D9 L2 J. l3 r6 }2 iI am going to tell you a story."
( W+ _: s  t! I1 S+ Z9 p
3 [% y' P+ O% t( w3 g! H5 GI just looked at my friend with disbelief as he told the story of the first day we met.) o( `; f! W3 d, B+ ^* b# c
4 e8 F# N7 z7 p# n. w. s/ h
He had planned to kill himself over the weekend.! K: ], L  M3 S- s. @# c/ N

- S+ d! s9 u6 N7 B- M* H% T, qHe talked of how he had cleaned out his locker so his Mom wouldn't have to do it later and was carrying his stuff home.* Q& F) O5 v2 ^* f! r

' K3 U9 {: Q9 e& }( S  Q6 LHe looked hard at me and gave me a little smile.
3 h: i$ G! @" h; s) g6 m7 o& V' T
0 W+ w! M  N6 h8 o6 ~) O* B"Thankfully, I was saved.: X4 g1 G; F* J2 P

" B" l" G6 C% ~3 g/ IMy friend saved me from doing the unspeakable."
' @5 Y  K) y/ l! d+ B8 o8 E8 ]) j1 z1 Z5 ^
I heard the gasp go through the crowd as this handsome, popular boy told us all about his weakest moment.6 m6 Y3 z' A2 j! S, C* A

7 J) W7 ]& E2 @! A8 FI saw his Mom and dad looking at me and smiling that same grateful smile.( H, l7 s3 u4 N- s

3 N$ {; Y6 d! a: {# }! J7 DNot until that moment did I realize it's depth., x/ B5 E. y% f4 W/ T8 b7 S

9 P* _1 i! S/ g. J; d1 kNever underestimate the power of your actions.
- w, C7 |' A; d7 U7 V. T1 F3 k: e
- V5 Q0 w5 Z; OWith one small gesture you can change a person's life., g5 U) K2 x* Y& e) ~
) h  f3 z$ J1 ?- N, ?* t) }7 W
For better or for worse.' a; J) E$ f5 `9 k/ a; k3 W1 O

) f9 q  ?; v% s: Z8 J+ O: s9 Y' _God puts us all in each other's lives to impact one another in some way.
* \0 ?- ~9 H- z" i2 \, y  ~1 O2 i1 b' L4 L3 d( E2 ^
Look for God in others., c1 f: V' i. C7 l' ^

! C  L  G' P& ^- ^You now have two choices, you can:
* Y5 x, ^3 A. a  [- [$ M8 }$ t: }
1) Pass this on to your friends or
3 B' W/ Z4 ?7 z; E9 q1 W2 r& b9 r1 @/ S7 B& l9 B0 ]
2) Delete it and act like it didn't touch your heart.
) \4 U1 v$ F) l5 p. h
+ {4 c/ q# ~9 {, V7 ?; t+ cAs you can see, I took choice number 1.
" }( }# e; B' n"Friends are angels who lift us to our feet when our wings have trouble remembering how to fly."4 A; r- |% B' i# @: ^

' _, {7 J+ |; r4 d! G$ H6 H. x- IThere is no beginning or end.. Yesterday is history.' d* M3 v7 G2 f- a1 t& L, k* g6 v& E
$ d& J- e+ Y1 K) U
Tomorrow is mystery.- g! E4 H, F' `" }& Z) a: t+ H
% e0 ?( u6 K$ C0 O* N5 x9 V+ J
Today is a gift.: d2 d; ?$ m/ T% x/ s9 z/ J! h
