You never know

One day, when I was a freshman in high school,- r& I' B4 y7 }& t. ]- `# r
5 N( c3 K6 k( i9 E9 w9 l3 Z
I saw a kid from my class was walking home from school.( d8 Z* N0 g" T" M
) v5 N) d* e# X! K: g
His name was Kyle.
- t, G0 }0 Q; E* l: N8 b0 {+ ~5 A0 ?, a3 N4 z. d' x0 J6 |4 m& e
It looked like he was carrying all of his
+ u7 }1 n2 i  J' p- n0 KBooks.% s) l; T2 j5 \1 U7 f! D
, Z7 d9 x9 [5 T7 a5 y
I thought to myself, "Why would anyone bring home all his books on a Friday?
: ?5 W/ h) t. o# R/ e* @' V+ k, Q' o! ^
He must really be a nerd."
" J6 K) B) p# o
9 y, U2 }6 O- \% H  C* S1 xI had quite a weekend planned (parties and a football game with my friends tomorrow afternoon), so I shrugged my shoulders and went on.
8 G7 ^' E1 U" n9 w  g) Y9 U/ H3 k6 o5 y
As I was walking, I saw a bunch of kids running toward him.
3 _9 A& D  h9 f' f6 ?0 [
. b: A& J9 Q3 {* ]* ^" p+ r2 yThey ran at him, knocking all his books out of his arms and tripping him so he landed in the dirt.: O6 k8 h8 P2 E. r! F6 {4 [# X
# s: F! j7 \) S% K( L: A
His glasses went flying, and I saw them land in the grass about ten feet from him.
0 n6 f& b' A$ r3 m1 w% N( c
' u2 p* H8 N7 l% o  R: e4 k. g9 WHe looked up and I saw this terrible sadness in his eyes' M9 a) _3 e' f1 r( {0 n* p
% z& n; I; J' x9 C" d
My heart went out to him. So, I jogged over to him and as he crawled around looking for his glasses, and I saw a tear in his eye.
. a  m2 n# Y& ?3 I& H; O* g! l$ C
' o& M* N8 b6 uAs I handed him his glasses, I said, "Those guys are jerks.; J* }: s1 J" O9 g
$ c: ^9 _6 T; d+ @' H
They really should get lives.
. r) M3 O" i# o- E- R2 u, l+ s
2 c% I+ R; M# h5 u) @5 z$ t" He looked at me and said, "Hey thanks!"
  N* W3 j, ^; u- c9 J
: h+ B7 u* a+ C1 N& kThere was a big smile on his face.
( _% W  H! g  _& }! V
  h! K& [2 U4 w6 x( a; n2 p- ZIt was one of those smiles that showed real gratitude.% A; k, c- z) M4 z% B5 [

( @/ Q* \0 V" D, xI helped him pick up his books, and asked him where he lived.
" N! E8 J( n% b9 r3 H& T6 L( y% j
3 A9 P" }, Z6 B0 S/ c# c- ZAs it turned out, he lived near me, so I asked him why I had never seen him before.' q' Q2 R) v3 D
5 L8 y2 c1 k) E$ ^
He said he had gone to private school before now.
* A5 B! a  N) e5 L3 I) m8 j* j7 y9 b0 ^
I would have never hung out with a private school kid before.; T' o% G, U: t$ z8 t. \
  C7 w4 I9 @& D! \( E, _# D
We talked all the way home, and I carried some of his books.
. J9 d% U/ t' A/ [8 A: O* e3 f/ l7 f/ B9 m) x) [: e
He turned out to be a pretty cool kid.
- j3 o" r1 r  u0 B/ p. k0 P$ x
/ |/ l6 l0 z+ Y4 V/ p1 NI asked him if he wanted to play a little football with my friends.5 J2 U5 |( O: z# \/ h
! M: o: k  a. E# U; d
He said yes.
" E% X4 V! C1 I( N
+ ?- ~- M: y6 cWe hung out all weekend and the more I got to know Kyle, the more I liked him, and my friends thought the same of him.! A& c1 ?' B$ h3 T- w( L* d  y& x8 g
$ R( i* W4 H% [$ B4 a
Monday morning came, and there was Kyle with the huge stack of books again.) z& I0 T6 P& z- A: s. Z

2 {" y1 M0 Y% Y! u1 R4 i1 yI stopped him and said, "Boy, you are gonna really build some serious muscles with this pile of books everyday!* p" k) @$ W/ P1 Y* p  P/ j( I

) t( v8 A: Y* X- r7 ]: N4 a" He just laughed and handed me half the books.8 u( S& e3 ~# W! ?
7 v/ h9 u# t- U9 u4 N
Over the next four years, Kyle and I became best friends.. o8 h. X* Q: ^8 h9 v! V* Q

( `/ Z- z3 c  n0 rWhen we were seniors, we began to think3 U7 Z1 S% w. r5 g
About college.: w7 P7 _; r# g& z( e7 w& t

/ ?5 n: @# m  I& \" e; {Kyle decided on Georgetown, and I' ^- L1 V8 B7 `& I/ L
Was going to Duke.
. S" a0 G0 J2 Y
; c! w  @4 {( ]" v9 iI knew that we would always be friends, that the miles would never be a problem.5 z9 v7 U" h  A4 i! O
1 {% e6 j' _( U* v  {' ^0 }" X
He was going to be a doctor, and I was going for business on a football scholarship.* V6 h; D" L0 J  Y  K1 w

, Y/ k9 l& K* P. ^: NKyle was valedictorian of our class.
, b( Z9 |5 F' ^1 p
; _  N6 o% [8 [I teased him all the time about being a nerd." G0 ]& q+ q4 O9 p' V0 R+ z  g& x
/ l9 I" X) k# n& Y
He had to prepare a speech for graduation.% F4 L! V  t' Q4 ~- {
" C2 u" F: U2 ^2 j# D( I9 K( r
I was so glad it wasn't me having to get up there and speak
; c* L7 W6 r' u; E, ?. o  Q" X; ?
" {$ A3 f3 E8 ^& e; u7 v# LGraduation day, I saw Kyle.* M* f. y1 s5 |* A2 _% s& J

4 B' _* S) B# |, MHe looked great.7 U! y  P" m8 ^6 I5 g
. [- h5 h5 |  E; c
He was one of those guys that really found himself during high school.
0 ~" @5 [* E, G  _+ ^0 ]# p, M7 U5 B' \
He filled out and actually looked good in glasses.
' o) F# k2 f8 D. G9 K
  N$ c# b- o! FHe had more dates than I had and all the girls loved him.& E1 f) J6 C4 Z7 C2 v
! x2 t( F$ ^; j/ c; g
Boy, sometimes I was jealous.
# j% U2 k5 I7 {9 \* B9 j, A: P& [3 c1 C$ e' T& _- Z" R& m
Today was one of those days.$ V1 d( g( v' r0 B+ \

* Z2 D1 R1 L% `" k/ Q' y2 e; NI could see that he was nervous about his speech.6 V  s3 d* e3 T8 O
2 o- c0 l  g& t
So, I smacked him on the back and said, "Hey, big guy, you'll be great!"
9 {' w+ z" t4 ~: f! U+ p7 @9 ?5 f0 ~
8 R0 B/ V  L$ H" ^5 ^9 tHe looked at me with one of those looks (the really grateful one) and smiled.
3 I/ ?8 D8 j9 T% D# U7 r. Z
8 M* M0 n" [; c# C. @"Thanks," he said.5 R$ }" W4 u+ X* _! m/ X1 C
; S/ b0 X5 H' g1 \1 i' \$ F( c0 y
As he started his speech, he cleared his throat, and began- ^( @4 [9 H0 k& d( c

1 I$ a$ t- Y1 y; B6 g$ a"Graduation is a time to thank those who helped you make it through those tough years.
) N0 ]+ X7 T8 N, N! [( ?1 C: W  h7 E
Your parents, your teachers, your siblings, maybe a coach...but mostly your friends..., ~+ L* {% {: u
  i' L( `. p/ U5 Y( }" c
I am here to tell all of you that being a' t+ [) @9 R( J0 t* Y; U
Friend to someone is the best gift you can give them.
$ }3 W* x0 k9 V$ n; j1 n" q* G* a+ ?& }
I am going to tell you a story."
7 r6 ]! X+ ^- Q" z; V4 }' A
. j* v. x7 n8 NI just looked at my friend with disbelief as he told the story of the first day we met.8 }' L" s! V. B5 p
  @$ h1 u- U& e: j! `* |4 J
He had planned to kill himself over the weekend.  ?! I; m1 c" }4 q1 R  q

# W; U# W) z0 n5 A8 \* yHe talked of how he had cleaned out his locker so his Mom wouldn't have to do it later and was carrying his stuff home.
6 [+ }( @4 N8 U/ S% I3 K: Y3 D* w7 X+ [
He looked hard at me and gave me a little smile./ N0 _3 b, R$ p4 E+ O/ Q+ f6 {0 Z; s
. ?  n% }4 r* ?& p
"Thankfully, I was saved.
' H7 U2 ~. r2 L  u8 x% ^/ D( j$ h* b6 Y" v# B6 G: h% ?' ^
My friend saved me from doing the unspeakable."3 x5 |9 S6 b$ F1 U) T, r& K

; W" _8 N5 t- R2 G$ ]I heard the gasp go through the crowd as this handsome, popular boy told us all about his weakest moment.
+ H( l; q. g9 L2 p9 W: Y# a
& N  S" H( T. Y" d0 C4 G- MI saw his Mom and dad looking at me and smiling that same grateful smile." f' r" h0 v4 I5 I3 d; J) F; v

; a1 a9 c  h1 y; W4 g3 E, nNot until that moment did I realize it's depth.
8 [6 `7 X9 s& _7 n: s' z* v
* S( ?* G# ?9 }# H  J: n& q" Y6 `Never underestimate the power of your actions.* p& L1 w8 C. Y$ q8 g

: {9 \6 N0 Q4 D9 aWith one small gesture you can change a person's life.5 ^: `8 G3 B. s

- n. X) v8 F1 o- Y  HFor better or for worse.* J  m& q: l& J

$ Y$ B% t9 }7 O8 {; c8 AGod puts us all in each other's lives to impact one another in some way.6 y2 d3 C/ R& H+ L' o, _: h/ z

4 B3 q0 N& S0 t0 k$ pLook for God in others.

4 {0 v" l. B& ?; Y" Z/ gYou now have two choices, you can:5 C3 C5 t# G: `" h1 G
9 s+ }& d3 d2 X: A$ n) e9 n. c9 i" i
1) Pass this on to your friends or
* C4 }: N8 A: F. K1 _9 p* ?, g2 k; }9 ^& u+ w6 h6 R
2) Delete it and act like it didn't touch your heart.

( d  Y0 H! t2 Z' I  ZAs you can see, I took choice number 1.; }% W7 q6 C+ e# x) {* i3 `
"Friends are angels who lift us to our feet when our wings have trouble remembering how to fly.". u" R, V$ [; |3 N

1 N7 k* t  a7 k4 x. zThere is no beginning or end.. Yesterday is history.

Tomorrow is mystery.! B$ E6 I1 [( P4 \
