now inside a phenomenal, incredibly responsive Nikon machine. At 36.31 [ E3 S' f7 z, u
megapixels, the D800 produces unprecedented image quality and resolution }2 ~9 ?1 }# B+ o& ]) }( m
within a body that boasts revolutionary technological advances. The 3D color# L/ v% k+ S {7 c a0 s3 P2 w9 P: c
matrix metering III, wide dynamic range and the improved AF performance" h: _: c5 Q) E* W% N, U3 B
in low light are just a few features that are glaring improvements. The D800
R( |" }( e& lallows me to concentrate on the light, the composition and my subject
* x+ _* P" e- n) qwithout having to think about much else. In years past, wedding photography3 x1 g: H& b A3 C
was traditionally captured with medium-format equipment for maximum* F# l$ v6 V- X8 g( {
image quality. When the 35mm format was adopted within the genre, it was2 {" I+ |/ c/ ~1 z- z0 p; P
widely accepted that image quality was compromised in lieu of speed and
+ J" C! F: D) g; X9 ]convenience. Now, my wedding portraiture will have a depth it’s never shown
" m5 x0 A r2 M9 `before, and my style of shooting will be enhanced rather than compromised,
# O) J* h& p6 Q, Othanks to the D800.
5 p9 }( m# K' C) H) vWhen I’m shooting beauty and jewelry in the studio or fashion on location,
/ W; e" S% m( {# T; f8 M36.3 megapixels changes the industry standard: in image quality, dynamic6 L- l" t+ _' Y1 U( q/ ? O
range, color rendering and the final print. The detail from the D800 produces( i9 c3 Z0 [. R! _' V
the look of a medium-format camera, but gives me the feel and response of a
9 r4 Y$ ?4 L* [% @- ]6 k0 TD-SLR. The improvements in rendering skin tone and specular highlights, as& w- l# T& Q( S. H* p2 d
well as fabric and hair detail are superior to anything that has come before.
) N6 Q& J" e- b: e# C8 |. {2 w+ {6 {Autofocus quickly tracks models in motion. Nikon’s 91K-pixel RGB sensor
( [, O0 V: R/ mhas noticeable improvements in metering accuracy, while the larger LCD is- f& p/ q# B$ r; w: a+ l" D' }
easier to read. The camera body feels solid and ergonomically simple, while
/ y3 j) \! Q! u& P! U: H8 }( p. zalso feeling lighter and smaller than previous high-resolution Nikons. New
& D* ?- ]2 a1 N, {7 h$ b2 Qcameras always inspire me to test and explore, and all the useful features
2 t* \( t' J" _4 oin such a compact package will open huge creative possibilities for my highquality
7 i5 x+ }5 n9 B& kprints and video.+ \6 v, \/ ~) J8 b9 x- r" u
To me, cameras are more like paintbrushes than technology. The goal is
+ M& M6 ~5 C7 [1 J. |% _" L. Rnot megapixels or technique but the image, and while camera models; {4 _ R" @9 e4 S/ l
are important, they are not the be-all or end-all. But after a lifetime using5 j; O) B3 K4 r8 N) E
countless cameras, I have found a new best friend. It was not love at first) s% m" v- u" ~3 R7 b! R
sight. The sharpness and detail were initially intimidating, exposing my flaws& c# e! ^" @( W, \$ l
like never before. Subtle camera movements showed and differences of# g. w) y, c/ M8 s8 G
acuity between aperture choices on various lenses were apparent. But now I
4 K' z S/ Y: w S8 P [am enthralled with this technology. Why? Because the images almost feel as( Y5 T' r0 l, b
though they were made with a 4x5 view camera! Special features like timelapse
$ L( ^ f9 @' L: I& ^photography and the improved HD video quality and flexibility also add
3 _. T1 v1 u+ n1 ~tremendously to the camera’s personality. After spending a month with the0 f+ ~8 O1 X8 c" ]) ~' c
D800, I’ll never be the same again. Perhaps the best compliment I can express
9 ?4 d& h! T5 q3 P, I' f# j- zis that now I will think differently about the images I make.+ i: W7 k2 K, v" Q' ^
As a modern architectural photographer I am always looking for a lightweight,7 B+ F5 p; F1 Q3 O2 a1 h$ M8 ?* u
compact and reliable camera system fulfilling the requirements of my personal7 v' {" x# X) r3 S6 H
artistic and client expectations. The Nikon D800 will set new standards for3 G7 f" p: E* ]
the high-end 35mm D-SLR market. I have never worked with a 35mm digital
* L% C& J4 M; T( k! Ocamera that produces images with such exceptional quality and detail till, j7 E- c* \( p* `; ^) e- q
now. Particularly, the live view mode enables extremely precise compositions* J2 ~5 Z9 r( O2 A# |$ }: N
and easy focusing in dim lighting, which simplifies my workflow. Superior/ E9 i1 x( e8 R3 j; N
quality lenses such as the PC NIKKOR tilt & shift lineup are indispensable for, m, o! N* g) k" J/ w( ?+ v
architectural photography. From my hands-on experience I found that they
4 A2 W7 x8 J) w9 ~2 v: k Eperfectly match with the newly invented system and produce breathtakingly9 C% h8 d d7 J$ Q2 |
clean, clear and sharp files. This camera gives me the photographic flexibility& F- {( T- `& b2 f9 Z/ B
to work at unusual shooting locations and capture images in an exceptional+ l9 c9 `3 Q' z( E
range of light. It definitely takes my photographic versatility and image quality( B+ k. h( O0 j+ A' o
to a new level. What a new companion!
