Edmonton's population grew at boom-time levels during the past five years, despite an economic downturn some thought might temper growth.

Statistics Canada reported Wednesday that Alberta's population increased at twice the national average, while results of the 2011 federal census showed the Edmonton area's population grew at a faster rate than any other metro region in Canada from 2006 to 2011, with the exception of Calgary.

Originally, the city's chief economist John Rose thought Edmonton might see a slight slowdown from the impressive 9.6-per-cent growth it reported in the 2006 census.
