for Internet services. It is essential that I hear the views of Canadians/ B- |8 `* u$ P# V1 c
on the issues that matter. Prime Minister Harper and I have been clear0 @5 j* o- k2 N7 N# c) d6 F
that we cannot support imposing a UBB business model on wholesale Internet7 k" ~ h! Q' K0 ^& f* z; ?
service providers.7 f8 U* z& u9 B* [ x; g
) b* a; W" \6 ]Our government recognizes that the Internet and digital technologies are
: X x% w( k' ~6 Z6 lan increasingly important part of everyday life—including driving
( a" @8 z* N: w G7 ~2 E; |- cinnovation, commerce and social interaction. As the government develops
) j, v9 r* M. |) h* ICanada’s first comprehensive Digital Economy Strategy, we need to look! Q F- A9 m. g K1 c
carefully at how issues like UBB affect the big picture. We will be
0 I. d/ J; a- Rguided by our long-standing policies of encouraging competition and
, S" `/ r( `9 o' V! x6 Qinvestment, increasing consumer choice, minimizing regulation and allowing

* e: r: ^% \1 E: NThe Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) has
, P, K7 C U8 m8 U& _# i; @7 Z; Kchosen to examine these concerns that the government shares with a large- A* ?5 u) v* y) o' H; w. R: N
number of Canadians. Details of the CRTC consultation are available at

When the CRTC reaches a final decision following its consultations, the

8 v+ e( T) H4 Q# q- X' P0 K7 yline with the best interests of Canadian consumers and encourages# h2 k+ `: k8 r& B, D1 B
competition among internet service providers. I will be recommending that
