for Internet services. It is essential that I hear the views of Canadians. b% r [) u. ~9 y
on the issues that matter. Prime Minister Harper and I have been clear9 M, |7 D( F( C4 B0 j3 [! z
that we cannot support imposing a UBB business model on wholesale Internet

( C1 I( Y: i9 E% ?Our government recognizes that the Internet and digital technologies are
7 a# |. g( A" x, Tan increasingly important part of everyday life—including driving- L4 s5 }0 b. p4 ~
innovation, commerce and social interaction. As the government develops
+ N, I' }! X9 J2 z% j3 R' tCanada’s first comprehensive Digital Economy Strategy, we need to look. b# W, j- Y, X$ q( \' D7 A
carefully at how issues like UBB affect the big picture. We will be
2 g0 p, K0 J5 l$ b5 P& R, {9 f$ |guided by our long-standing policies of encouraging competition and
1 i M2 K, [; e! |; H. t3 e, ~* B4 ginvestment, increasing consumer choice, minimizing regulation and allowing

The Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) has
( `2 J/ h* E( \3 a" [. t5 {chosen to examine these concerns that the government shares with a large# p. M( Y3 J' |
number of Canadians. Details of the CRTC consultation are available at/ H, A+ Z& f# J3 z

When the CRTC reaches a final decision following its consultations, the
& C0 }4 ~) y6 @: m$ _' W' ~( [- Ggovernment will carefully assess the CRTC position to ensure that it is in2 d3 {9 f' Z9 U, V$ y0 Z* ~
line with the best interests of Canadian consumers and encourages0 c8 U+ f3 K( `7 g4 r% r4 B
competition among internet service providers. I will be recommending that f6 E$ S( s* b
any decision counter to these foundational principles be reversed.* b+ D3 N4 r; t2 a* e1 E! T, l6 Z
