for Internet services. It is essential that I hear the views of Canadians) b; ^2 \5 P5 k# r) ?3 _9 y" o
on the issues that matter. Prime Minister Harper and I have been clear
0 H3 u; s. v7 M% nthat we cannot support imposing a UBB business model on wholesale Internet7 W) N+ i1 \$ L# U4 G" a/ J

Our government recognizes that the Internet and digital technologies are3 O- a, Y* L4 S* ?
an increasingly important part of everyday life—including driving
6 }0 M2 L& ?" X7 Q7 y z" rinnovation, commerce and social interaction. As the government develops& E" }- `9 O S
Canada’s first comprehensive Digital Economy Strategy, we need to look* }/ \+ t |6 U7 S2 q
carefully at how issues like UBB affect the big picture. We will be+ p$ w5 M1 N O. l; p
guided by our long-standing policies of encouraging competition and
& a9 `8 R5 X7 j% e3 Yinvestment, increasing consumer choice, minimizing regulation and allowing3 Q7 ]' L; G0 ~5 ^* K
market forces to prevail.

The Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) has
" V& _) p* V5 C# O9 N6 i! Qchosen to examine these concerns that the government shares with a large
+ A3 u6 w7 x5 B9 F( u& Inumber of Canadians. Details of the CRTC consultation are available at

When the CRTC reaches a final decision following its consultations, the% z9 m; r! i' @0 z6 |; c
government will carefully assess the CRTC position to ensure that it is in
0 p, s: \+ z$ B0 Hline with the best interests of Canadian consumers and encourages% L/ {2 ]; V' {6 j5 T
competition among internet service providers. I will be recommending that5 E' v6 \5 b; I; u: }! U9 T
any decision counter to these foundational principles be reversed.9 g* ^) E" L6 {; S, C8 v7 m4 P
