Roles and Functions
0 m9 J& t! V: ? t# U7 L% \The Coordinator is responsible for the over-all management and operations of the
3 J" u m: `+ b* q" t6 x% Z% korganization. The Coordinator defines the objectives, policies and goals for the
8 R3 ^/ M/ n6 u# d6 soperations of the organization staff within the general board policies. He/she has* q) X* \+ j4 r, n0 T
the important responsibility of accurately reporting on financial progress,' ^* B A% O; f3 ~3 d
operational concerns, organizational problems and accomplishments at regular
! t3 Q' ^3 Y% R. H; ?board meetings. Short-range planning is the responsibility of the Coordinator and is9 P+ A8 N. i) l; O) P
conducted within the policy guidelines of the board. The Coordinator is an, S4 @& l2 K/ A( f3 y0 R
employee of the board and therefore should not be part of the board which hires
& u% ?, u" O/ _4 J$ _staff and sets their salaries. However, the Coordinator should be required to attend0 I: P: R+ ?( Z
all board meetings and be an active, nonvoting participant., ^: [) _+ C/ b5 _% b5 t: ^$ D

The specific functions of the coordinator include the following:. g$ P, A- K' P! a" t" ?' E3 d
1. Provides over-all coordination of Coalition activities in consultation with the

2. Builds and sustain relationships and partnerships with ethnocultural
& I* t( z$ Q* q5 R2 e4 r! d1 [* Forganizations, immigrant and refugee communities, voluntary organizations
6 _% e" `: J p% [6 q9 Dand public institutions
2 i- Q0 [6 I" J3. Seeks opportunities to ensure sustainability of the organization through1 u+ p' Q9 ^: y8 G
funding opportunities and maintaining initiatives
) B5 f$ B; [% M4 K4. Liaise with funders, public and non-profit organizations and community
2 u! T# F6 G s; x) V J e! z# H' [organizations as well as the media and build strategic relationships with

6. Advances the community animation process as a bridging strategy for civic, w" M% ~+ l1 N5 K/ E+ ~
participation of ethnocultural communities with the larger Canadian society& A. s" r6 Q/ B" j
7. Offer opportunities for service providers to learn and experience working+ R2 r. ^$ I) g( e$ y
with groups and communities with culturally, ethnically and linguistically

/ {" K1 H% |, N* W2 GAdministrative responsibilities:
2 z0 W& y5 `6 {- B1. Maintain an adequate bookkeeping and accounting system; provide for its o! J9 j2 k( @# E( R
regular examination by competent outside auditors, selected by the board of c- [/ m# R5 }$ _: j* j G( K
directors, and at the regular annual meeting, present a statement to the: i( ]* [; v9 w6 X% a4 n6 i
members of the Coalition’s financial condition.
$ a5 u& j1 W- l% n$ q* J2. Recruits and hires staff for programs and other initiatives of the
# I }' ?) j6 b4 z0 j) aMulticultural Coalition
( k/ [0 |8 I7 B: P7 v. t2 uRelationship of the Coordinator to the Board# S# `. V; e2 R3 p" I$ [1 i
All operating decisions, employing and supervising personnel, choosing ways to
/ J. o" _0 e5 T' y- Uimplement policies, planning the Coalition’s day-to-day activities, and coordinating
# ~2 R1 `+ t6 o" qoperations are a part of the Coordinator’s responsibility.+ _( U- E6 r3 @! m% u: Z+ E2 q
The Coordinator shares some responsibilities jointly with the board, such as longrange planning. The Coordinator usually provides the initiative and then assists the board in decision-making. The purpose, future directions, broad basic policies, and! _" |5 }9 [3 R; y/ f# ]
aims and objectives of the organizations are decided upon by this process. It should
2 L3 R& F4 i# W; T6 m9 P3 C5 Ebe noted that the board members make the policy decisions guided by membership
+ t+ R: R2 V: v, O) } d6 pparticipation and the Coordinator should confine his or her activities to helping and" ^4 W0 s8 b; U8 o. I4 H1 }6 q, j. _& U
facilitating this process with the Board. The Coordinator attends all board of/ v2 x k+ r; q8 l. G
directors' meetings and make available a business report and a monthly financial
: A/ e- d: `; f) Cstatement as a minimum requirement. She/he brings to the board's attention all
/ V" K: U k6 f- m8 |matters requiring board consideration and action. She/he confers with the board of" V' d6 G; y! I+ c+ M
directors on the development of new policies and appraises the effectiveness of
