17. Our vicar is always raising money for one cause or another,. U" E, I4 M& X. ?0 V$ ]1 ~9 ?

18. but he has never managed to get enough money to have the church clock repaired./ n- N! M, `; n5 f, U: g

19. The big clock which used to strike the hours day and night was damaged many years ago and has been silent ever since.
# \1 b+ g; R7 P& R* w        教堂的钟很大,以前不分昼夜打点报时,但很多年前遭到毁坏,从此便无声无息了。
/ L& x0 B0 L; Q5 A- c5 p9 b20. One night, however, our vicar woke up with a start: the clock was striking the hours!

21. Looking at his watch, he saw that it was one o'clock, but the bell struck thirteen times before it stopped.

/ Q) g5 `9 y' k/ Z22. Armed with a torch, the vicar went up into the clock tower to see what was going on.& [! x# U8 I; P

23. In the torchlight, he caught sight of a figure whom he immediately recognized as Bill Wilkins, our local grocer.

4 l# r7 ^* _; [4 Y( \; }+ Z2 e5 g24. 'Whatever are you doing up here Bill?' asked the vicar in surprise./ k; |8 t! f, m% d  C

25. 'I'm trying to repair the bell,' answered Bill./ h( ]; D9 `; ^  L) Y- g% h6 p

! T* D7 W/ V- s5 A9 k8 f  \8 O26. I've been coming up here night after night for weeks now.

$ N; r) ~6 G, X0 g4 H, X/ B28. 'You certainly did give me a surprise!' said the vicar.
& Z$ Q+ K' _8 [4 ]/ \" x        “你确实使我大吃了一惊!”牧师说,
7 k) f5 e/ N* e; J" Y* }9 w- `! X% X29. You've probably woken up everyone in the village as well.
5 j2 @) O% j- d        “也许同时你把村里所有的人都吵醒了。
* V1 g$ Y5 p) i' {30. Still, I'm glad the bell is working again.4 j4 n1 p$ G  p3 r. L# k
        不过,钟又能报时了,我还是很高兴的。”* |2 i4 l" \: t) ]7 v. J' @
31. That's the trouble, vicar,' answered Bill.
+ ~# N4 Z) R8 P3 O% Y+ y& E5 h* g        “问题就在这里,牧师,”比尔回答说。7 l. X( g3 ^# Z0 x6 s. E7 g
32. It's working all right, but I'm afraid that at one o'clock it will strike thirteen times and there's nothing I can do about it.7 E8 b+ ?$ ?3 t4 P* r4 l  P9 B, B
        “不错,钟能报时了,但是,恐怕每到1点钟,它总要敲13下,对此我已无能为力了。”# `2 f2 z' o* t4 |
33. We'll get used to that, Bill,' said the vicar.

34. Thirteen is not as good as one, but it's better than nothing.9 D- s6 _) Z: ]% N: }
        “13下是不如1下好,但总比1下也不敲强。
% r9 C1 \+ w2 n! b% N) g* H35. Now let's go downstairs and have a cup of tea.
' b  H, q4 d, T  N0 L3 N# r        来,咱们下楼去喝杯茶吧。”
