Beautiful story.... makes you understand that things happen for a reason

3 ` N p7 K( L6 o, x The brand new pastor and his wife, newly assigned 6 s$ s& D$ g3 E' R! M( E
to their first ministry, to reopen a church
1 L, x, E+ [* B$ [7 x5 y& O- sin suburban Brooklyn , arrived in early October
) y8 G$ Y4 U4 g# i6 |( g5 jexcited about their opportunities. When they saw
+ C4 l& Z3 U3 ~" {7 x3 Stheir church, it was very run down and needed : j) o1 B* k' y# k
much work. They set a goal to have everything , @2 x2 P+ v6 E O: \ p- O8 y
done in time to have their first service
0 p5 R( P3 N5 C+ j3 P4 H' {on Christmas Eve. * y, C& k; j2 g
T hey worked hard, repairing pews, plastering walls,: I, ^ x' w+ S# W+ f/ a/ c
painting, etc, and on December 18
9 ^# d4 @, V: i, S. U2 |/ Q$ ]1 U; hwere ahead of schedule and just about finished.
- `. }+ Y/ W8 sO n December 19 a terrible tempest - a driving 3 K: W' m2 g# b$ ^2 V" |! x
rainstorm hit the area and lasted for two days.
8 Y' T& |: c9 ?9 a O n the 21st, the pastor went over to the church.: e I1 _2 K7 S9 J
His heart sank when he saw that the roof had$ b K+ i7 z- e5 Y" G
leaked, causing a large area of plaster about
: q) _$ Q) ]2 l- @$ D20 feet by 8 feet to fall off the front wall 6 B. t, c/ n! A. v) ?
of the sanctuary just behind the pulpit, # n x6 A& G* c6 V' s8 e6 L* A* i
beginning about head high.
z* ?+ [, J+ g: S0 T. XT he pastor cleaned up the mess on the floor, $ j' q7 I0 l& n6 }* K; ]
and not knowing what else to do but postpone . d6 r, F1 L, h$ v1 P5 L
the Christmas Eve service, headed home.
3 @3 ?+ _! k8 R. [( ^" aOn the way he noticed that a local business was 3 }) Z+ N% {* O
having a flea market type sale for charity, so he / p! F& Q; R+ e' N( v8 X) q7 M
stopped in. One of the items was a beautiful,
& x" z7 o; m9 b1 c( f6 w1 p- z- Phandmade, ivory colored, crocheted tablecloth 7 F0 n3 ?1 X+ O& @' t- S9 `
with exquisite work, fine colors and a Cross $ K, _6 m9 ?5 o9 N* B$ j: m) F
embroidered right in the center. It was just " n) \* G) N) p0 s% s# L7 ~
2 Z. \2 Z1 ?- [ U& F) c
4 w6 h1 |8 } u& T3 d& X; C* o 6 j5 y6 {5 A6 V7 x* H% G
* \6 o1 n$ P1 x3 l % {. B9 M. m! w) S
% @5 V; p' e1 H" K7 Dthe right size to cover the hole in the front all. He bought it and headed back to the church.
; O& e0 }, c' R/ f& KB y this time it had started to snow. An older
/ } G: A6 M/ T w+ rwoman running from the opposite direction was 1 d6 [# |8 j$ R5 G* L
trying to catch the bus. She missed it. The pastor 0 o5 z. E# L4 |! ^; w9 W7 t0 }
invited her to wait in the warm church for
& r' b2 k) |- n9 k& J ]the next bus 45 minutes later.
" Y9 C3 I, g5 p; t3 W" t T- l- m/ Y) v+ R2 d1 P
She sat in a pew and paid no attention to the pastor
0 b% L% a6 ^: m9 z jwhile he got a ladder, hangers, etc., to put
1 |- n% j1 x5 v$ y: Wup the tablecloth as a wall tapestry. The pastor
) q j- K! L7 K3 @0 J8 tcould hardly believe how beautiful it looked and it covered up the entire problem area. - @0 L7 k3 @4 Q$ v# o$ L
T hen he noticed the woman walking down the center3 E9 W; p3 ~3 b: S" B$ z3 h
aisle. Her face was like a sheet. "Pastor,", y+ q2 D3 X2 g5 K. w' o. S* n
she asked, "where did you get that tablecloth?" : W! `# M4 F5 p6 g0 N# S
The pastor explained. The woman asked him to check
' |. U; D0 Z; h8 P: L& h( U( Athe lower right corner to see if the initials, EBG were crocheted into9 b/ M2 O2 g* x
it there. They were. These were the initials of the woman, and she had
" r! i! H" i6 J. x5 Lmade this tablecloth 35 years before, in Austria . . ?) n$ t0 ^; |9 l
T he woman could hardly believe it as the pastor 7 ]. l8 |) o! v( N- p
told how he had just gotten "The Tablecloth". The
6 w5 e# g' j7 O X7 Gwoman explained that before the war she and
9 U2 k9 Y1 W, g* D' Bher husband were well-to-do people in Austria .
# Z& }! |, f# Q; y& u9 |. P7 U3 z+ G( Q/ Z
When the Nazis came, she was forced to leave. 6 _# t- y* {" ?+ i
Her husband was going to follow her the next week.
) @' {7 R: q0 n9 v- W- \& a2 bHe was captured, sent to prison and never saw her # A% `4 v# P5 r) h1 k) X7 e
husband or her home again.
! r+ @' K" k4 b) J, Z& t5 q: {- ?T he pastor wanted to give her the tablecloth;3 G! y. D$ B% A% _
but she made the pastor keep it for the church.
4 y: V% Y! w* }- J* n6 }The pastor insisted on driving her home. That
4 {% w# R) }" p& J! A! @$ \was the least he could do. She lived on the other' f$ m* e1 k3 r4 S: K2 N
side of Staten Island and was only in Brooklyn 6 ^! T; b+ Y& ]+ _' P! f
for the day for a housecleaning job.
, r- e6 b+ I% E j* ~4 F# eW hat a wonderful service they had on Christmas
& C- O; K& S3 h; rEve. The church was almost full. The music and the
' s, ~) q ], ?% A) [spirit were great. At the end of the service, the
; ~& ^" p8 a6 o& z& t+ ipastor and his wife greeted everyone at the door
2 R" p7 L7 C, Nand many said that they would return.. + n# ?* [" e* S
One older man, whom the pastor recognized
1 _8 S' r3 e! W1 j3 ]1 Z! z. `from the neighborhood continued to sit in one of the : Y& Y; h( h1 |9 X
pews and stare, and the pastor wondered why he
. ~$ A6 n, V* G8 e' Bwasn't leaving. # x; m1 ~& P! K$ I2 C9 l
The man asked him where he got the tablecloth on
1 u9 L" ^1 q4 T4 K7 J- W2 i B9 Hthe front wall because it was identical to one ! ^$ |. ~! ?5 @
that his wife had made years ago when
% X$ w$ s4 s4 x# r$ D: T2 n. h7 Tthey lived in Austria before the war and how 6 e9 ^. w- b+ @$ A, S
could there be two tablecloths so much alike?
' O# W- f8 A& g& h( _7 VH e told the pastor how the Nazis came, how he 6 J; G" y$ X; m( V: o2 w! }( g
forced his wife to flee for her safety and he was
5 V- l2 y7 [! }# b& usupposed to follow her, but he was arrested and
8 \$ S: d2 ^+ l1 V1 ~# hput in a prison. He never saw his wife or his home' k+ P1 S* R- a6 K7 ?! w; ^
again all the 35 years between. " p5 v1 W9 G1 q6 j
T he pastor asked him if he would allow him to , i3 D, a; a3 X, w% Y4 Z
take him for a little ride. They drove to Staten 0 J) G. X( [( E2 K( b
Island and to the same house where the pastor 1 {( P* B8 Y! v' k, S5 ~
had taken the woman three days earlier. , S. w2 z& t( A
He helped the man climb the three flights of
& j/ L( B( x# C4 H7 Tstairs to the woman's apartment, knocked on
9 g" a9 I( S: m' tthe door and he saw the greatest Christmas - H- V: r3 [6 x' J" b; {4 E
reunion he could ever imagine.1 [+ p' i( z4 k
