 Beautiful story.... makes you understand that things happen for a reason

" z; J% n/ S7 i# r+ v. Y9 ~/ ` The brand new pastor and his wife, newly assigned
. ?1 y/ W8 u! Dto their first ministry, to reopen a church 0 t. n' K$ {8 B, ]- q
in suburban Brooklyn , arrived in early October " @7 j( V* C. d) Y
excited about their opportunities. When they saw 4 u+ y: {9 `4 W2 z( l7 `* A
their church, it was very run down and needed
+ i w1 v: r: S" p! {% h: y$ T6 mmuch work. They set a goal to have everything
* I% Y9 |4 Y8 t! \$ bdone in time to have their first service
! {. F, B$ t2 a Y; D) Y; |on Christmas Eve.
8 S6 M7 X! E O0 k8 }0 GT hey worked hard, repairing pews, plastering walls,3 ]$ d+ [0 i8 R4 z$ ?: M
painting, etc, and on December 18
% M3 }4 e3 O/ q# n) Q7 wwere ahead of schedule and just about finished. $ h: h7 F, W6 a6 _8 ^& k
O n December 19 a terrible tempest - a driving # \7 D5 A+ M' n5 k/ H
rainstorm hit the area and lasted for two days. 5 z& r/ U- ~; }$ H; n; R
O n the 21st, the pastor went over to the church.
, R& [" W l0 _1 K: y- U8 nHis heart sank when he saw that the roof had
9 [! D1 k. ^3 a0 U! U9 N7 eleaked, causing a large area of plaster about 7 t5 r2 j8 Y) w* {- |2 }
20 feet by 8 feet to fall off the front wall
% l) K6 F9 [# g- eof the sanctuary just behind the pulpit,
& W+ `2 Z3 G! R3 l, u8 sbeginning about head high. R, D8 k- H9 D* o/ M7 ]
T he pastor cleaned up the mess on the floor,
5 b7 j: Q/ ?8 P) O; D, H7 Rand not knowing what else to do but postpone * N1 l6 ^" D2 f, R8 N# Q, \( K. D
the Christmas Eve service, headed home. # Y5 c% s8 C. ~# M- K! G8 z' f
On the way he noticed that a local business was 3 O: @. b+ @% y' l y: s
having a flea market type sale for charity, so he ( m S7 Y2 t. K" j& @" T% n, v1 [' g5 T
stopped in. One of the items was a beautiful, 5 R8 _$ y8 W. D3 `+ S
handmade, ivory colored, crocheted tablecloth
9 i# E) _, h3 ]0 rwith exquisite work, fine colors and a Cross % t" G6 j" ~( W; y& U- x
embroidered right in the center. It was just

% ~+ }! J' I7 Y, q ' {( D; z' c! E# Q: f
& F/ P6 v6 |' |2 p
* \/ X9 \0 \" x0 P
" ~1 p; _2 Z- B: U7 }the right size to cover the hole in the front all. He bought it and headed back to the church. % i: v {" S" J
B y this time it had started to snow. An older * i" F( R4 F7 B/ |* Y1 W3 O- k/ q9 g7 [
woman running from the opposite direction was g7 S5 D) D8 V/ k- Y* G
trying to catch the bus. She missed it. The pastor f: [! W8 Q1 h( X! m
invited her to wait in the warm church for
{+ d" J* b+ \the next bus 45 minutes later. : S/ Q; h+ v' x4 W! \. l
; I: p5 Y1 f6 N6 ^$ Q: U, AShe sat in a pew and paid no attention to the pastor 3 B* U! ]- v% ]9 ?
while he got a ladder, hangers, etc., to put
* h0 H, J+ O, y0 w) H4 h; d% Z; Uup the tablecloth as a wall tapestry. The pastor
8 s z& U2 W! {could hardly believe how beautiful it looked and it covered up the entire problem area.
5 H0 N0 j# a1 oT hen he noticed the woman walking down the center3 X5 _) M2 m" g- r
aisle. Her face was like a sheet. "Pastor,"8 d3 r$ A* u7 P# ?
she asked, "where did you get that tablecloth?"
( M n+ u6 f, S3 L. u" F9 ~The pastor explained. The woman asked him to check
: F4 o& Q: g! \" s% M9 Ythe lower right corner to see if the initials, EBG were crocheted into2 k* d7 O4 y& \
it there. They were. These were the initials of the woman, and she had
! ]8 ~: i( ]8 R3 @7 l. c7 A4 Lmade this tablecloth 35 years before, in Austria .
% L9 N# Y9 E; r# n9 V9 o* R8 YT he woman could hardly believe it as the pastor ; C, E, x" u. d# L! @4 f
told how he had just gotten "The Tablecloth". The ( u9 C) x6 A- E/ i& o
woman explained that before the war she and
0 c0 _5 t# W7 `4 Fher husband were well-to-do people in Austria . & L3 Y& o3 P6 C7 |
R( N3 v0 N6 O. l/ e- eWhen the Nazis came, she was forced to leave.
. x" j8 B& o- F; n$ H2 Z; v8 LHer husband was going to follow her the next week. 4 f' {! k. s! \* U( [% Z) [/ f
He was captured, sent to prison and never saw her
6 {6 r D* G. \7 Q0 U, }% \" u! @5 khusband or her home again.
5 k+ F% i. n8 e: R% BT he pastor wanted to give her the tablecloth;; X) E6 P7 l. s! N: Y7 I
but she made the pastor keep it for the church.
# U- y7 p/ Q1 P) w, Q4 BThe pastor insisted on driving her home. That7 i5 T/ ^3 R% d' X
was the least he could do. She lived on the other, f; m0 Y* ?3 J- o& s
side of Staten Island and was only in Brooklyn ?6 p6 e" p( j; P6 _' E
for the day for a housecleaning job.* }. x; E K2 n: T& p, Y3 M5 D1 {0 g7 v
W hat a wonderful service they had on Christmas ) S- R2 x' S! `7 b2 Z/ E
Eve. The church was almost full. The music and the + H9 g0 y. S6 K: \4 p
spirit were great. At the end of the service, the + a( ?1 d( D( j" Q9 i9 Q6 Z
pastor and his wife greeted everyone at the door 9 `+ T( |4 ~1 ~5 d/ O% _% U
and many said that they would return..
" A6 A0 f: Q0 R/ tOne older man, whom the pastor recognized
* d) K( {' c7 O8 \) rfrom the neighborhood continued to sit in one of the
. Q' ~( a. `* r( M3 N, Lpews and stare, and the pastor wondered why he
. E, K9 t1 J. g9 U' Rwasn't leaving. & F) o# x; D2 }1 s/ t
The man asked him where he got the tablecloth on
( c! K" A: R- r3 b# z# u* O4 I( @/ |7 }the front wall because it was identical to one
+ G- K; Y c' ythat his wife had made years ago when 8 V S* Z. M0 s. Y8 Z) L
they lived in Austria before the war and how 6 @2 r1 J; v0 o; ^& q9 s
could there be two tablecloths so much alike? $ r, `" ?! h6 O8 H4 V
H e told the pastor how the Nazis came, how he # v4 k4 n4 y. {
forced his wife to flee for her safety and he was : `7 M% Z- k( r1 K7 `
supposed to follow her, but he was arrested and
2 `4 R1 C5 Q% A3 Dput in a prison. He never saw his wife or his home* f3 G2 [: e; x5 d& T _
again all the 35 years between. 5 Q( `' L! ?1 C( U# n9 Q# r( d8 C9 P
T he pastor asked him if he would allow him to
1 a; Q. {0 i4 @take him for a little ride. They drove to Staten N9 E; q7 k. U! d
Island and to the same house where the pastor
6 O) l @# H: H' Q; shad taken the woman three days earlier. & J3 F5 U9 D0 O4 R' T6 T/ A# ~8 I
He helped the man climb the three flights of5 K ~3 V5 @( c) T1 |1 U
stairs to the woman's apartment, knocked on
W) I$ K$ v% q- P- p/ Jthe door and he saw the greatest Christmas
- ^2 h' Q: o: y: O6 Q sreunion he could ever imagine.

along your way. His love is always with you. His

1 Q. C7 c! ]% h! R% Acares we know He will see us through.
' |5 k" [% T5 q6 Y- ]* FS o when the road you're traveling seems
* O5 a+ i7 O% d+ s, r* P0 ddifficult at best, just remember I'm here
; k. _ ~+ O" [; t7 c6 I# ypraying and God will do the rest. Pass this on
