Edmonton's population grows by 30,000* w, T- g2 {- {3 V- C1 x+ Y- _

EDMONTON - More than 30,000 people moved to Edmonton between 2008 and 2009, bringing Edmonton's total population to 782,439, say municipal census numbers released Wednesday morning.

t# j/ i: v6 z+ S7 ]The population increase will lead to roughly another $650,000 for the city in provincial grants for policing and libraries, while other grants such as the provincial Municipal Sustainability Initiative could also be affected.0 n P M( _( g+ n0 T" F: {5 V) @
Mandel said he was surprised by the increase.
4 ]2 {8 v3 P s1 S, c; X"It's a substantial increase, but it's not going to overload our system, so it won't work," said Mandel, noting that much of the population is between the ages of 25-34. That age group does not use as many city services as others, Mandel said. : F- b6 ^- J, |: ?" d
Edmonton grew by about 40,000 people between 2005 and 2008. The city in 2008 decided to conduct an annual census, after conducting the surveys on an ad-hoc basis before that.) j8 h, u% b$ @5 O
This year's census cost $1.7 million to complete. City Manager Al Mauer said the annual census could be reviewed but, over time, conducting population surveys brings more money and important data to the city. |
