Edmonton's population grows by 30,000$ W; Q, V" P9 ^& K& o

* I4 j9 j% F) j3 [2 YEDMONTON - More than 30,000 people moved to Edmonton between 2008 and 2009, bringing Edmonton's total population to 782,439, say municipal census numbers released Wednesday morning.
/ D1 u% ^1 `+ d4 v* s4 E"It shows the resilience of our city," said Mayor Stephen Mandel.
2 I! t$ k/ c* h+ \The population increase will lead to roughly another $650,000 for the city in provincial grants for policing and libraries, while other grants such as the provincial Municipal Sustainability Initiative could also be affected.* G, P2 O1 A$ \, D# X b" C1 h+ J# P" G
Mandel said he was surprised by the increase.( v( f8 q$ ^. d
"It's a substantial increase, but it's not going to overload our system, so it won't work," said Mandel, noting that much of the population is between the ages of 25-34. That age group does not use as many city services as others, Mandel said. " D: T& y/ n, c, ?& B2 Z6 m/ v! W
Edmonton grew by about 40,000 people between 2005 and 2008. The city in 2008 decided to conduct an annual census, after conducting the surveys on an ad-hoc basis before that.; F- M! i) O7 m( n) k: n+ o0 s
This year's census cost $1.7 million to complete. City Manager Al Mauer said the annual census could be reviewed but, over time, conducting population surveys brings more money and important data to the city. |
