Edmonton's population grows by 30,000: X( w5 P# \9 d. U( B

EDMONTON - More than 30,000 people moved to Edmonton between 2008 and 2009, bringing Edmonton's total population to 782,439, say municipal census numbers released Wednesday morning.8 U @4 N! a+ t& D
"It shows the resilience of our city," said Mayor Stephen Mandel.
( |; O. q& i1 I) }% YThe population increase will lead to roughly another $650,000 for the city in provincial grants for policing and libraries, while other grants such as the provincial Municipal Sustainability Initiative could also be affected.4 I0 H. {' U% ~' S# E4 m
Mandel said he was surprised by the increase.( Q7 H" t Q. Z4 H+ `
"It's a substantial increase, but it's not going to overload our system, so it won't work," said Mandel, noting that much of the population is between the ages of 25-34. That age group does not use as many city services as others, Mandel said.
9 R: f1 s' g9 Z! @Edmonton grew by about 40,000 people between 2005 and 2008. The city in 2008 decided to conduct an annual census, after conducting the surveys on an ad-hoc basis before that.# c* W5 k8 `. E' V6 E! {. {/ h
This year's census cost $1.7 million to complete. City Manager Al Mauer said the annual census could be reviewed but, over time, conducting population surveys brings more money and important data to the city. |
