3 E, f( l4 ], z9 S5 N* M5 ZDear colleague: once a year, the Waste Management Branch hosts the
+ A/ u2 K/ H; V$ r0 [Master Composter-Recycler Program. Over a 3 weeks course schedule1 g' ~1 ? J7 ^) j8 A
(Tues./Thursday evenings and Saturday) volunteers will learn about0 [2 E) N5 {) y* ~; D* I
environmental stewardship in our city, such as: history of waste
/ u2 {5 k1 S( K6 R3 {7 V Tmanagement; home composting; household hazardous waste; r5 w" j; C7 M# ]1 J
vermin-composting and residential recycling.2 Z1 A4 S- n% D1 }3 F
; \5 V( I: `. [( U% n
This course offers in-class instruction as well as several field trips
5 C' ]& H, i! j* `: Kto various City facilities. After finishing the course, graduates5 | ?; A' l( a9 p M4 Q0 ?/ @1 V
complete 35 hours of volunteer activity promoting the four R's:
$ D/ [5 m# L6 u- {reduce, reuse, recycle and recover. Graduates become important9 a* J4 l; V4 o$ L+ T2 z
resources in their communities as they broaden awareness about the
9 {4 u+ ~; C6 c2 }1 o$ m& x! eimportance of composting and recycling.# n% `4 o/ B- m, G# L7 @# W
$ ]7 F7 f# H' x7 ]' |# |: sExamples of volunteer activities include: help with Reuse Fairs & the
% X2 K, w! a- ~2 R2 {& {/ `Reuse Centre; helping friends/neighbours with composting problems;
`, X4 [9 f. @7 U& t1 |* {$ p7 z8 Jpublic education display booths; assisting with programs and
5 H1 P- W+ m' }0 a+ [* d( mmaintenance at the City Compost Education Centres; assisting at
5 R" V- K S, I# Q- _& D$ Qvarious demonstration gardens and general public and school
! e9 @6 c+ m6 X* P4 ~6 L! N/ i- H5 gpresentations.: s Z: e/ @" c, d; O" @
0 [2 d+ ~) P# t$ q& _There are many other opportunities for volunteers to contribute and) a, m" |/ Y6 Q
volunteers are able to choose the opportunities that interest them the- O2 K; ^; h) A$ w

knowledge with others, then apply to become a Master
