SCOPE OF THE CONSTRUCTION ELECTRICIAN OCCUPATION

training and abilities, is capable of laying out, installing, testing, troubleshooting, and repairing electrical5 l% w: z& [* n% C
systems, which provides light, heat, communications, and power to a variety of new and existing7 D" Z4 Y9 w2 v. p+ s7 c$ @
residential, commercial, and industrial structures.
; r0 M2 G& W- a" ]Construction electricians read and interpret electrical, mechanical, and architectural drawings
; m; c5 `* r2 B6 Jand electrical code specifications to determine wiring layout. They cut, thread, bend, assemble, and
3 j Y6 h4 D, s; P4 `% _1 Minstall conduits and other types of electrical conductor enclosures and fittings. They pull wire and cable Z0 Z! O. o) ]: f$ R \
through conduits, position, maintain and install distribution and control equipment such as switches,& A8 N$ k$ [: u7 u
relays, circuit breaker panels, and fuse enclosures, install single and multi-wire cables above and3 J8 W6 r0 m2 m5 D" j' N, w8 o# g
underground, install data cabling, and install and maintain fibre optic and signalling systems." l- D* a/ v" D6 ^2 Z0 N
Construction electricians work in the full range of environmental conditions: from outside in
Q- {4 x( t2 ]$ [- U( y" k# vall weathers; inside in dusty industrial plants and mills; to state-of-the-art clean-rooms in hospitals and: ?$ [ x; w' N$ Y! c
manufacturing plants. The work often requires considerable standing, bending, crawling, lifting,. U% n$ G/ e/ y- ~9 V& g/ a3 w
climbing, pulling, and reaching and may be conducted in cramped, confined spaces or on ladders and
. s3 B9 u K lscaffolding at great heights. Hazards include electric shocks, burns, and falling objects.
# g5 F* g8 j) \( [+ EConstruction electricians are required to have good mechanical ability, a thorough
! Z! ~/ Y+ p! z. Jknowledge of the principles of electricity, circuitry, and power distribution systems, and familiarity with
+ S2 U: m8 W7 z; F0 l9 a. Hthe materials and techniques of construction. All construction electricians are required to be competent in& c9 J: k9 Y Y7 a1 S
the use of hand and power tools and test equipment. J; L7 V: Q) R" r! z6 ]+ C( q5 H
All electrical wiring and installations must conform to the CSA Canadian Electrical Code.

8 q \5 j: G) O: \For safety, permits and other regulations they follow local electrical, building and safety codes.
! V% W2 p/ ~' i: V1 NOn small jobs, construction electricians may work alone with minimal supervision, and they; d# D G; T4 f; h3 J$ V
may supervise an apprentice. On large jobs, they may work under the direction of a supervisor.

and air-conditioning technicians. They are required to constantly adjust their schedule and work to3 g7 G s9 n; p# Z

With advances in technology the work of the construction electrician is changing. Today’s; l) T, e- y) r! ^1 G% F
wired environment requires construction electricians to be able to install a variety of wiring such as data,
9 ~( O9 y9 M, gaudio, video, signalling, and communication cabling. Electrical control systems are also becoming more
, O8 E+ h# x+ q6 t/ J' H! Wcomplex, often solid-state or computer-controlled, which requires the construction electrician to have a
