The double-blossomed peach-trees with rosy bloom were gay& Y- u6 W* j& }. \# ^
When grandpa rode beneath them upon his courting way,' j$ }, g! c) L# L2 [) C# o W0 Q7 a
From the white gate to the homestead they stretched in stately row, o6 B, _/ W" P' p$ I- ?0 B
And showered his path with petals, just sixty years ago.
: }0 N5 u: Y) s5 a- i6 |+ u8 JHis riding suit was spick and span, his jingling bridle rein,# L3 U! W3 f' M5 J
Was polished to the limit, his top-boots shone again;* h* h" p- G- k
A mass of youthful vanity, from curly head to toe,. T, ^ I4 A+ }9 E
Was my darling gay young grandpa – just sixty years ago.- C6 J: ]* ?/ [7 Y: R; I
" F6 W* I ~. E- ]
Upon the broad veranda, demure my grandma sat,! u' ~4 J. g3 e: v9 S0 I
And hid her girlish blushes beneath her garden hat,
% c$ u2 \5 e ?% | M2 @Her dainty flowing muslins enfolded her like snow;
5 [8 X9 ^4 x4 i3 Y% wAh! Very sweet my grandma was, just sixty years ago.4 L4 L# |* ~0 R7 J( c
With sweeping bow and fluttering heart he told his hopes and fears,; s+ d3 d; g( C1 M4 W& A2 O
And grandma gently said him ‘Yea’, mid blushes, smiles and tears.3 d: z: ^, w* E5 `8 f
When the double-blossomed peach-trees with fruit were bending low,. e9 X a5 E* h
Good Father Flynn united them – just sixty years ago.
9 N* N7 H* a$ A- S( v8 S
, V( [. b3 S- ^( X5 w5 [- J; qII0 n1 Z4 Z, F5 Z4 u4 \7 C4 H
There’s a sound of mirthful revel in the dear old home to-night,
$ i( u/ a8 c. M; ^+ @& HWhere the merry young folk frolic ‘neath the incandescent light,
1 z# H7 [1 l5 v" GJazzing on the broad veranda, listening to the radio,
) f( y" _8 F+ n( O LKnowing wonders quite undreamt of in the days of long ago.
! e x: M2 a5 s0 o9 @# HOn the vine-enclosed veranda, sits my grandpa in his chair,
- P, u& z( M2 j0 E2 w+ Y4 D# jAnd the flower-scented night winds stirs the white locks of his hair;
3 p% ]( _4 B2 [6 u2 }) cGrandma sits and smiles beside him, happy in the young folks glee,7 q5 R4 A9 G% R+ Q: o% N+ Q
Such a dainty dear old lady, ever young at heart is she.% m5 t) v% k6 S( B0 E2 I$ z7 u
! c* }& [% l- V5 a/ MAnd the harvest of their labours in the moonlight stretches wide
' r9 Y" H4 m% K# K; c# ^! G- nAll the land they’ve won and toiled for as they struggled side by side,
" ~: O& S- D% LIn their brave old eyes no shadow from the griefs of gone-by years,& \' i7 j" n/ ], |8 V
For their hearts beat high within them – dauntless breed of pioneers.
9 Y7 Y& Y* T' `Hand in hand they sit together, while the angels smile above,' B- u0 H* P2 @7 d6 v2 R
On their long unbroken record of faith, sacrifice and love;
, r& ?5 D. e3 PFrom the double-blossomed peach trees come the petals falling slow,
& n9 j- ]* m( o! WBringing sweet and fadeless memories of Sixty Years ago.0 a/ V6 O6 B7 ^# I0 Z6 j
