* T0 G5 T4 @0 ^1 m& p! |EDMONTON - Prices for new homes in Edmonton fell 5.3 per cent in July compared to the same month last year, marking the biggest year-over-year drop in 23 years, said Statistics Canada today.

8 X" W: k: u# ~( Y- u: s# P3 n4 {Even heated Saskatoon posted a slower annual increase of 13.1 per cent, "further confirmation of a trend of deceleration in this city. Many builders reported increased prices as a result of higher material and labour costs," the agency said.

The fastest pace was in Regina, which saw a year-over-year price increase of 29.6 per cent, down from its record rise of 34 per cent in April.) l/ R% s6 w+ L( P( i" x

As the market continued to cool in Western Canada, prices for new homes rose nationally at a slower pace in July for the sixth consecutive month.( w1 E, n" ^6 |8 |: }. N
" G* M' D1 s4 P' }3 VPrices were up 2.7 per cent in July from a year earlier, down from June's annual pace of 3.5 per cent. On a monthly basis, prices edged up 0.1 per cent between June and July.1 H6 J4 w% C2 o1 Q1 {/ M6 K
