May 9 2008 - Statistics Canada reports that the unemployment rate rose to 6.1% in April even though employment increased by an estimated 19,000 over the month as more people entered the job market. Calculated in the U.S. manner, the participation rate reached 64.5% in April.

Only Manitoba registered significant jobs growth during the month. Overall, the decline in manufacturing jobs continues as a major trend with 112,000 factory jobs lost since April 2007. 7 H- D6 Q, M i: ~4 q
Seasonally adjusted, unemployment rates vary from 13.2% (Newfoundland and Labrador) to 3.3% (Alberta).
