The VERTO Project
8 t' S& G% ^+ q+ H- ~+ T' _The YOUCAN VERTO Project is a Government of Canada funded project that will3 S3 T9 w* E4 R" G9 y
bring 12 (per intake) at-risk youth together into a unique 20 week group-based/ j: \9 J8 f5 [9 S& ]
employability skills program entitled “The VERTO Project”; 16 weeks of day2 Q; m% E! H& |, v
program and 4 weeks of employment exposure. YOUCAN is an acronym that( z9 B c1 I. h$ O
stands for Youth Organizing to Understand Conflict and Advocate Non-Violence.* P+ w# I% c8 p: Y+ k& ~
YOUCAN has served youth in the Edmonton area for almost six years and our
. K& s8 e+ ?/ {+ ~ [" k Q# b- hmission is to equip youth to engage and inspire others to peacefully resolve- [9 w* Q* S6 q" H% R- z
conflicts and develop healthy relationships in their communities. The goal of the
F% t8 v" H$ [VERTO Program is to assist participants in obtaining and maintaining the skills0 z* V- s. j) I/ E0 @ t
necessary to bring success into their lives. The program is designed to serve+ }' s1 @ x5 s! g1 \, N8 b
youth who have been involved in the justice system. The program will expose
1 G1 {% x6 u# i: ~participants to a wide range of components focusing on: employment
: K% r' ~1 [7 g V6 Udevelopment, personal wellness, technology learning, conflict resolution and& g; M3 O7 E) i# p% K4 @
exposure courses. Additionally, we will incorporate topics around health and" Q7 E( U0 |6 Q, B) r6 Q7 E
wellness, volunteerism and leadership courses. The youth will be provided with a% B) X4 E$ j2 I! E4 f E& d
6-month employment follow-up once the program is completed.* P& w# r6 R" f2 h7 c
The project will run from 9:30-4:00 p.m., Monday through Friday at the Central
2 C2 B' |- i5 {YOUCAN office, located at 8718-112 Avenue in Edmonton, Alberta.

/ D% w' |* C: Q* EEmployment Developer: 1 Full-Time Position (40hrs/week)6 ~; }4 d7 m5 p& t( L
• Responsible for building relationships with employers within the5 h* V! E, ]: r& D. {
community to partner with YOUCAN to ensure there are employers that are
7 r# r' V V0 ^4 Nwilling to expose youth to the current employment opportunities
' t0 d# L7 E4 c7 _2 y• Ensure the youth action plans are reflecting the employment goals as v" T5 h1 |& V0 V. f
being realistic to each youth participant
8 G7 H3 l. {! e' r• Work with the youth to find the appropriate training needed to equip the
- L% Q9 l0 b5 ~: r1 k& }youth with the necessary skills needed to find the employment suitable to! ]5 @2 b/ k( j) _
each participant3 j4 f. n/ E0 n5 f. B) r
• Assist youth with employment development including the development of
2 Y4 Z/ ^' Y+ r' [/ q# Acover letters and resumes etc.
$ T/ X- w0 G U O9 L9 s& s: x• Coordinate the employment exposure component and on site work5 Y; _! o$ _& X3 k& ^; d: n5 U
experience of the project, and monitor the progress of each youth at the
! n1 y% [) H' e7 U* f! B# L, splacements9 H, E. j: h- q r! X
• Conduct the 6 month follow up process for each of the youth, evaluating
7 Y+ e" Z6 i0 E% S5 bthe process, and supporting the youth where needed9 L+ d# H. n4 S! \: y, z) `- F) y0 r
• Work closely with staff of the Verto Project to ensure the holistic approach
' W- \' Y% t# v ?" Dis being fulfilled for each youth
% [& H6 W- B9 e h! W! H' {0 e• Administrative tasks, such as phone, fax, filing, copying, etc. that are
$ z- M! z2 v8 _" c1 ^4 Prelated to YOUCAN’s Verto Project
