这一首世界著名的诗,是德国籍牧师、同时也是神学家的Martin Niemöller牧师(1892-1984)于1945年所作。这首诗,可以说是他自己的反省,可比美圣奧斯定(St. Augustine of Hippo,354-430)的「忏悔录」,这首诗现在刻在Martin Niemöller牧师墓碑上,成为他死后,他的灵魂向神、向人无尽的忏悔。这位牧师在欧洲基督新教界颇具影响力,一九六一年,他甚至当选担任全球基督教(新教)界重要国际组织「普世教会协会(World Council of Churches, WCC)」的主席。这位牧师所以会有这样的忏悔,是因为年轻时,他曾一度拥护希特勒,並且一度反犹太人,但是后来自己反悔,公开反对希特勒、以及希特勒的反犹太运动。

The meeting with the Tibetan Youth Congress and other high-profile pressure groups came as he faced an intensifying challenge to his position as leader of the exiles' movement, based in the northern Indian hill town of Dharamshala.
