8 n: |, A0 D* w1 n1 @1 y4 qGood news. U of A plan to stop increase tuition for students who are recently in U of A. However, they will increase tuition the current students who will go to U of A next year. Sounds fair. I deeply agree.

Dear International Undergraduate Students,

Yesterday, the Academic Planning Committee of the General Faculties
Council met to discuss the tuition proposals. I have both good and bad
+ }/ G7 d1 w0 L/ V. }news to report from that meeting.

First, the good news. The committee decided to grandfather all current
undergraduate international students from the increase to the
differential fee. This means that next year, all current international
2 Y2 g7 X$ {6 V4 N% H7 ustudents will pay the same tuition as this year, plus whatever base
; E+ E9 k9 B' ?tuition increase that all students face (the proposal calls for 5.75%).
9 }6 a/ {* r# \5 t! [9 EAlso, the administration decided to withdraw their motion to increase
0 A4 R; ]$ D  W8 y) q# Q$ X. b9 e1 ythe differential for international graduate students.

- b  C+ [2 U* R8 @4 b' MNow, the bad news. The motion that the committee approved called for an
increase in the international undergraduate differential from 157% to
* o! j! v" h8 m220%. This will mean that all new international undergraduate students
, ~! V) j2 g$ u9 b9 vwill pay $15,353.89 (assuming that the 5.75% increase happens). At
$ X! j0 [4 Q5 sleast, all new students will know what the U of A is charging in
. u, E7 k  e# i. @- x. Etuition before they come and they will not face any large unexpected
increases once they are here.

1 w0 p7 b) B: p4 O0 xThe Students' Union will continue to oppose both the increase in the
international differential as well as the base tuition increase. I
- B! x3 n) j, W, U) kwould like to say thank you to all of the international students that
0 b4 y* R8 B9 c, \7 `have sent me emails, come out to consultations, and opposed this
increase. I couldn't have got the increase grandfathered without your
help. Thank you.
