8 {- o( a: ~ o0 ^* lGood news. U of A plan to stop increase tuition for students who are recently in U of A. However, they will increase tuition the current students who will go to U of A next year. Sounds fair. I deeply agree.

Yesterday, the Academic Planning Committee of the General Faculties 0 r1 d' s7 F; v/ N( p9 @! i; z O% f
Council met to discuss the tuition proposals. I have both good and bad * O6 ~5 K0 P% `6 d% L7 P* j! k
news to report from that meeting.- ?# m( q) ]8 N) Y: H
) L0 i2 S5 Z& h7 k, _& w' \( vFirst, the good news. The committee decided to grandfather all current 7 o( L7 E$ `( b- M
undergraduate international students from the increase to the 6 d$ O9 l6 s2 M G0 }
differential fee. This means that next year, all current international * j6 E4 S/ R `2 B# s+ n! T& x
students will pay the same tuition as this year, plus whatever base
! u7 z) J5 e' C% ktuition increase that all students face (the proposal calls for 5.75%). 1 ?5 v# }; c- _2 ] o4 @4 i+ g
Also, the administration decided to withdraw their motion to increase / S, J- \# i+ b& D* z
the differential for international graduate students.
1 ?. H+ t) w5 n$ G& s4 V" L9 v! _. L/ Q, u" k
Now, the bad news. The motion that the committee approved called for an 6 K$ L0 j% ?3 V5 u
increase in the international undergraduate differential from 157% to % V9 ?; D+ {% v! _5 X1 j; n# U
220%. This will mean that all new international undergraduate students 6 s! U/ L" A/ h
will pay $15,353.89 (assuming that the 5.75% increase happens). At 2 D, M* ^8 d+ x# e6 A
least, all new students will know what the U of A is charging in ) o3 }, U1 N; m) J6 K0 A
tuition before they come and they will not face any large unexpected
- W- G# ?% V" {+ i) uincreases once they are here. u: G2 y2 w! g+ ^
! X8 N! j' `0 ]1 a- T2 O q' T
The Students' Union will continue to oppose both the increase in the 9 P3 |$ w( M8 a: D: d0 s' a* z) b4 q
international differential as well as the base tuition increase. I
+ C9 H1 A& r; Zwould like to say thank you to all of the international students that
6 s. k+ n5 A7 J7 [have sent me emails, come out to consultations, and opposed this ( P% ^$ F1 L6 m: N. C% k
increase. I couldn't have got the increase grandfathered without your 3 s: o- g B& Q* y7 V: r
help. Thank you.
