3 T, ~6 \* X( Z' J0 K3 tGood news. U of A plan to stop increase tuition for students who are recently in U of A. However, they will increase tuition the current students who will go to U of A next year. Sounds fair. I deeply agree.

Yesterday, the Academic Planning Committee of the General Faculties
7 x9 R5 h& e. C0 MCouncil met to discuss the tuition proposals. I have both good and bad
/ F& ^* I) K; K. Fnews to report from that meeting.

First, the good news. The committee decided to grandfather all current
' R' M8 [5 M4 M' g% d& Tundergraduate international students from the increase to the
, C' L6 L$ x+ [differential fee. This means that next year, all current international / I$ I4 |1 x( q: G. p% M1 a
students will pay the same tuition as this year, plus whatever base
6 \/ z& [$ f3 g4 G" p \tuition increase that all students face (the proposal calls for 5.75%). ( k) I) t0 l: _
Also, the administration decided to withdraw their motion to increase
( x2 b7 J9 Z/ i" j- nthe differential for international graduate students.

Now, the bad news. The motion that the committee approved called for an . c4 q* a# W D( i$ g% h- ]
increase in the international undergraduate differential from 157% to ; P" v" |% r3 C' v3 s! a
220%. This will mean that all new international undergraduate students
8 X+ r% P- T! m# Ywill pay $15,353.89 (assuming that the 5.75% increase happens). At
, y8 s1 z2 Z B$ qleast, all new students will know what the U of A is charging in ?- W8 \6 ^, \) ^
tuition before they come and they will not face any large unexpected
t! \* b6 b0 c, r) Tincreases once they are here.6 T: R J9 K1 y6 b- J& d2 [- f, F

The Students' Union will continue to oppose both the increase in the ! K) G6 H$ [5 `7 H* n
international differential as well as the base tuition increase. I

& g z( m+ `4 @/ Zhave sent me emails, come out to consultations, and opposed this 9 G" ] w a* p" `
increase. I couldn't have got the increase grandfathered without your 7 ?# k6 Z' l4 G/ ^& J# ?
