Good news. U of A plan to stop increase tuition for students who are recently in U of A. However, they will increase tuition the current students who will go to U of A next year. Sounds fair. I deeply agree.

7 `4 B2 n& j- \Yesterday, the Academic Planning Committee of the General Faculties
( e9 Q. j/ {; G% ^: x6 }Council met to discuss the tuition proposals. I have both good and bad 3 O# g* x G2 ^5 @1 Q
news to report from that meeting.

7 V8 B- D0 ?: _First, the good news. The committee decided to grandfather all current
. h+ T- k) x8 @9 n& E1 \5 Mundergraduate international students from the increase to the 8 q0 @4 Z0 v3 {2 G, M
differential fee. This means that next year, all current international
2 i2 Q! [! c3 I6 B& _5 rstudents will pay the same tuition as this year, plus whatever base
1 |6 M3 L; M) {tuition increase that all students face (the proposal calls for 5.75%).
i0 n- ` |# U& U, e$ C2 mAlso, the administration decided to withdraw their motion to increase * l* {; V) U: u) H$ d+ Y2 M
the differential for international graduate students.

" O& N D- l! `# v- ]Now, the bad news. The motion that the committee approved called for an ( F; h$ r3 Z: _ e+ e$ x5 H. e) ?
increase in the international undergraduate differential from 157% to
2 ]5 w& T5 n; d% q! t, Z% b# h220%. This will mean that all new international undergraduate students
) v+ i1 Q& r! }3 b; q* dwill pay $15,353.89 (assuming that the 5.75% increase happens). At / b( B+ U4 i: H! `
least, all new students will know what the U of A is charging in ; b5 c n5 J# h! q
tuition before they come and they will not face any large unexpected
, |# h1 o9 q6 A7 y) Mincreases once they are here.

The Students' Union will continue to oppose both the increase in the - F8 d* M2 m( r# w
international differential as well as the base tuition increase. I

have sent me emails, come out to consultations, and opposed this ' f9 q2 H2 ]7 x5 k% W- u+ I
increase. I couldn't have got the increase grandfathered without your
