Dear International Undergraduate Students,

+ L A; o% F; } B$ V' Y) U; ]Yesterday, the Academic Planning Committee of the General Faculties ; v/ @) u. L2 q% o+ N0 ~
Council met to discuss the tuition proposals. I have both good and bad 5 R2 g4 q7 q8 w; ]% B) t$ d
news to report from that meeting.0 i. P8 U& e/ Z! m
" ]2 o. H4 n. h- Q! h* C4 u
First, the good news. The committee decided to grandfather all current
8 l; F. h' M A$ g! h8 rundergraduate international students from the increase to the
4 e w+ ^+ ~% J3 adifferential fee. This means that next year, all current international : Y0 s o1 r* ]; k+ J
students will pay the same tuition as this year, plus whatever base 1 i* ]- ^8 c5 v2 Y
tuition increase that all students face (the proposal calls for 5.75%).
. g, o* z- u! \9 C) hAlso, the administration decided to withdraw their motion to increase
2 E$ r$ E" b* } M2 ithe differential for international graduate students.
0 v) V" w; O4 B3 |( A1 r r; I3 _
+ P8 {) z: O5 c2 O: _+ lNow, the bad news. The motion that the committee approved called for an
& `% F6 B" ]4 n5 y* c0 X" Yincrease in the international undergraduate differential from 157% to
b/ v3 Q* P6 ^+ S220%. This will mean that all new international undergraduate students
+ G) _. A* ], t" o; D% r" n3 Q" p) gwill pay $15,353.89 (assuming that the 5.75% increase happens). At ( M; G H c' o: e2 z! I& b
least, all new students will know what the U of A is charging in
. r7 [9 g, j Dtuition before they come and they will not face any large unexpected 3 A+ L( u$ i# ]8 I% V0 o: N
increases once they are here.% L3 X; V! J2 s
! Q( ?+ Y1 B. _, _The Students' Union will continue to oppose both the increase in the
" h4 F2 |; u' q8 S9 \international differential as well as the base tuition increase. I 6 H# j# _3 A2 `8 R/ F, a
would like to say thank you to all of the international students that 7 G3 e ?, |& n/ J% g. X
have sent me emails, come out to consultations, and opposed this 9 y3 e" g1 A1 N
increase. I couldn't have got the increase grandfathered without your 0 p; r- b& T1 l, Y: Z
