8 }4 O0 r5 |- n6 B" h4 dYesterday, the Academic Planning Committee of the General Faculties
9 Y2 O, n. Y% Z8 J! r5 T" l5 @Council met to discuss the tuition proposals. I have both good and bad
# ?; u- M* {. |6 U9 T0 G( o8 j0 Tnews to report from that meeting.
4 @ I, Q+ o3 w) T/ [ ~* I- f# ~8 Y, X( q& Y0 R
First, the good news. The committee decided to grandfather all current
5 |& f. h8 D+ p+ j! uundergraduate international students from the increase to the
r/ Z2 \+ @9 m4 C& P4 |) tdifferential fee. This means that next year, all current international
2 ], P) Z$ r& q6 C6 tstudents will pay the same tuition as this year, plus whatever base 3 c, o$ e3 S) m% q1 I1 u* Z
tuition increase that all students face (the proposal calls for 5.75%). + y9 h2 M( C+ e2 M1 u$ G8 }* `+ j/ c
Also, the administration decided to withdraw their motion to increase * b* X" D) V7 z# V4 c2 M+ ]2 `$ P3 l
the differential for international graduate students.
; g1 N! ^+ y1 b' _# ?5 Y2 d" [+ [) O m K/ Y: N) w4 n
Now, the bad news. The motion that the committee approved called for an
5 d8 {) v f0 P" I3 D9 Vincrease in the international undergraduate differential from 157% to
. w& F/ n8 ~& b$ t) K8 _4 j4 ]5 u220%. This will mean that all new international undergraduate students
/ W" v9 G \% O7 }$ n0 mwill pay $15,353.89 (assuming that the 5.75% increase happens). At
3 T! g. E* @3 j7 P0 [$ L. Aleast, all new students will know what the U of A is charging in
4 c+ l1 T# ?7 [% D6 T/ t1 Wtuition before they come and they will not face any large unexpected 1 r @0 W$ e6 K$ |* b* @6 h& D
increases once they are here.

The Students' Union will continue to oppose both the increase in the
- L8 E4 F8 i8 d) `: ?: ^international differential as well as the base tuition increase. I
