. I r6 }+ m8 ^. xGood news. U of A plan to stop increase tuition for students who are recently in U of A. However, they will increase tuition the current students who will go to U of A next year. Sounds fair. I deeply agree.

Yesterday, the Academic Planning Committee of the General Faculties " q& Q6 N$ j' j7 F6 T7 N
Council met to discuss the tuition proposals. I have both good and bad 7 ^, [ Z5 F7 H, o# B# w( M
news to report from that meeting.9 E3 D+ w p4 b. [, C. C4 R. ]1 l
3 C \( ?1 M& w: HFirst, the good news. The committee decided to grandfather all current
; z# Z2 Y* P3 J9 Cundergraduate international students from the increase to the 1 i/ u3 s) `8 o
differential fee. This means that next year, all current international : e9 l. I( C4 {! ?
students will pay the same tuition as this year, plus whatever base : d3 T% H( j: G5 v# h+ {; e3 Q6 B
tuition increase that all students face (the proposal calls for 5.75%). / j1 x' e. L1 y& D
Also, the administration decided to withdraw their motion to increase / p$ P. t3 L8 a
the differential for international graduate students.

Now, the bad news. The motion that the committee approved called for an
% Y" B. Q6 p% O; C2 B( ?5 uincrease in the international undergraduate differential from 157% to . Z# t" F |7 p# F. ~: H4 Q1 S+ V5 Q6 r
220%. This will mean that all new international undergraduate students " q- W9 ]* g0 p( ^( C- F- ]
will pay $15,353.89 (assuming that the 5.75% increase happens). At + o$ F2 ^; E, J
least, all new students will know what the U of A is charging in ! C% H: [8 G- q
tuition before they come and they will not face any large unexpected
/ n8 F" A/ ]0 x* K" Bincreases once they are here.

The Students' Union will continue to oppose both the increase in the
$ ~, O+ H$ c% H5 Jinternational differential as well as the base tuition increase. I

/ {1 p- \3 a [$ ]have sent me emails, come out to consultations, and opposed this
