When arrived to Edmonton to start my graduate studies on 2004, me and

While I was paying 340CAD/month for more than a year, I抦 paying ! X% f' F, p2 t! d
600CAD/month plus utilities right now, some thing around 700CAD/month.

9 I6 l3 c Y" o& w, h# _! D2 _8 T3 Lthe fact that the university housing has no more space for newcomers + S- i5 R6 r/ ?) M/ g R
and most of the newly admitted students who applied for housing were

' t- t' {& ?/ h9 H. E7 A0 UWhile the average cost of living for a typical graduate student has
3 Y4 T/ t' b8 g& `/ E0 lincreased by something more than 70% percent we are getting paid
4 ?" E: n1 M& S' y6 Bexactly for the same amount of money that we were offered in our ! W& i/ x. J# \7 t) D
admission letter (18000 CAD + 1500 CAD for international students 8 q @- L# ^+ \- F- d
=19500CAD. What I get is something around 1000CAD/month!!! after ; d; h* F" B1 S3 g& ~4 w) i: J! j. J6 P& p
tuition fee and taxes). To make the argument easy to understand just
0 D2 \# N5 S" r. \* y. Aimagine that a new student gets the same amount of money that I am
# ~$ T* E$ I E g+ y/ z% h2 lgetting now and I was getting 3 years ago but he or she (like all of
1 N7 j1 t% D5 M3 g- ~us) has to pay twice as much as I was paying for housing when I was 4 V7 e: _8 k8 J) l p4 r+ l8 u
admitted and has to incur at least 70% more in average living costs.

Also have in mind that Alberta is a rich province and University of ' k4 [; |# F4 @5 o* B+ C3 R" |
Alberta has a remarkable record in absorbing various money and grants 1 q' h; h8 T( Q& Q, I& |9 g, W, c1 ]
from different governmental and non governmental sources and graduate
* U4 d6 U! t! Astudents are the main pillars of research work at the university.

My objective in bringing all abovementioned points in your attention 2 _% t5 U( w; X/ ~7 A1 f4 c
is to question the adequacy of financial aid for graduate and ! J' o7 a0 p E C/ _2 l
especially international students. Isn抰 it time for the GSA to take4 Y5 }. n7 Y- J5 q, \
& D( {' P( {# M/ ginitiative in raising the issue of increasing financial aid for
?9 h* L* ?$ |1 X! @2 [graduate students so that the can afford this increase in costs?9 v% Y+ r0 f3 X7 p, T; H
' u& B5 p: B- F8 h7 J BPlease come with your experiences and ideas.. W8 H) Z- ]9 l$ }0 v
