differential fee was increased by almost 20% last year. Add to this, ' @7 K# L% Z3 u0 p4 W. Q" f
the fact that the university housing has no more space for newcomers
0 a' [0 q- I5 mand most of the newly admitted students who applied for housing were 6 N! |& @' y' F ~. z/ ]+ m
asked to look for a residence on open market.( P! ]) v+ M* O" k9 Y5 @
5 ^' c" T* X5 U9 s( n# }While the average cost of living for a typical graduate student has
8 ]8 i3 C7 D! jincreased by something more than 70% percent we are getting paid
( g ?) P$ D% t. g7 n& yexactly for the same amount of money that we were offered in our 1 ?) _$ J: W- q. q" j$ s
admission letter (18000 CAD + 1500 CAD for international students 5 n0 V. H" i# s1 w
=19500CAD. What I get is something around 1000CAD/month!!! after " r# x3 |0 W2 y6 F- D7 P
tuition fee and taxes). To make the argument easy to understand just
. k9 l# c1 n8 O! h6 d+ G1 \& yimagine that a new student gets the same amount of money that I am % [! m4 T' @3 X; g2 C
getting now and I was getting 3 years ago but he or she (like all of ' P% c# c7 J9 W; C+ |& c( a& B
us) has to pay twice as much as I was paying for housing when I was
$ n& Y9 [! Z* }/ L% xadmitted and has to incur at least 70% more in average living costs.

Also have in mind that Alberta is a rich province and University of ( U8 p* X- g7 U2 a* e4 a6 ?- S* {) Y
Alberta has a remarkable record in absorbing various money and grants
, e/ ^5 O D8 h+ \, m% U6 Ufrom different governmental and non governmental sources and graduate

+ A6 V1 D8 k& ~9 G' e* b/ A% @My objective in bringing all abovementioned points in your attention
9 E+ _: Q7 d1 q3 C6 u5 Pis to question the adequacy of financial aid for graduate and
$ |% V( Q" L8 g& f( |especially international students. Isn抰 it time for the GSA to take
' s1 P! u* |8 R1 O) r& D2 k" C6 ?7 ? 6 a; F4 k' ^% K9 m
initiative in raising the issue of increasing financial aid for 5 a$ I Y* A, T3 e
graduate students so that the can afford this increase in costs?
