"Lincoln" leads the pack, but "Pi" took a surprisingly big slice of the nominations for the 85th annual Academy Awards. Actress Emma Stone and Oscars show host Seth MacFarlane announced the noms Thursday morning in Beverly Hills, and some smaller, little-seen films were recognized while many blockbuster hits got ignored.: F3 T% }) y8 V4 H

Steven Spielberg's presidential biopic "Lincoln" leads this year's Oscar race with 12 nominations, including best picture, best director, best adapted screenplay and acting nods for stars Daniel Day-Lewis, Sally Field and Tommy Lee Jones.1 M* Y" A3 t3 l( h6 m
The visually stunning survival adventure "Life of Pi" made an unexpectedly strong showing with 11 nominations, including best picture, best director for Ang Lee, best adapted screenplay and a host of technical nominations.
/ s: j, U% v, ?! V& Y, S& W"Zero Dark Thirty" and "Les Miserables," which had been considered potential frontrunners, each received nods for best picture and in the acting categories, but were shut out of the directing category. Both "Zero" director Kathryn Bigelow and "Les Mis" director Tom Hooper have won Oscars before, but the fact that they were overlooked this year does not bode well for their respective films' chances to take the big prize. And while "Argo" is in the mix for best picture, Ben Affleck wasn't nominated for either best director or best actor.( @: j1 ^' X( K, c9 J7 _. T# C

Best actress nods went to youngest and oldest nominees in the history of the category, 9-year-old Quvenzhane Wallis for the indie underdog fantasy "Beasts of the Southern Wild" -- she was only 5 when she shot the movie -- and 85-year-old Emmanuelle Riva for the acclaimed Austrian drama "Amour." Rounding out nominations for best actress were past nominees Jessica Chastain for "Zero Dark Thirty," Jennifer Lawrence for "Silver Linings Playbook" and Naomi Watts for "The Impossible."

However, it was shut out of the major categories including best picture and best supporting actor for Javier Bardem. The highest-grossing movie of 2012, "Marvel's The Avengers," scored a single nod for visual effects, while the #2 film of the year, "The Dark Knight Rises," was shut out completely.7 y; ~! h% f% n( q7 Y a7 P
