Specific duties vary with positions and Departments and involve performing general labouring duties that may include:
Drainage Services, Asset Management & Public Works
. u# E3 z! J9 g6 D# P$ f•        Construction of sewer lines, catch basins, access and drop manholes, watermains, feedmains, hydrants, ditches, water appurtenances, concrete structures such as storm outlets.
•        Digging holes and trenches by hand, excavation activities on major open cut projects ensuring placement of shoring, timbers, and struts; cutting, grinding levelling, jointing and laying of pipe.
- W9 X- _2 T5 k- k•        Repairing sewer services, main lines and pumping stations; cleaning sewer and drainage systems by low pressure flushing; assisting drainage servicemen in inspecting, rodding and televising sewer services; repairing manholes and catchbasins; assisting equipment operators in performing high pressure flushing and vaccuum cleaning activities.

, P% I. }& x+ W/ Q6 _•        Maintenance of parks: mowing, herbiciding and sanitation of turf, shrub and flower bed maintenance, marking & maintaining sports fields, playground inspections and servicing.
8 a% F) ~8 z5 {" m2 j* ?: E0 L•        Construction of parks: manual labour using hand tools such as shovels, rakes and stake pounders.
•        Park service and trail maintenance: including sanitation of picnic sites, amenity buildings, repair of signs, roadways, trail surfaces, irrigation & homeless camps.
' Z2 s& ]' a0 v( r•        Forestry operations including various arboriculture tasks- assist in the development and maintenance of the urban forest.
•        Pesticide Applicators license an asset.
' f! P7 C- Q" W! `' O+ S•        Labourers may be provided with rate up opportunities where required.
8 Y! P4 z3 c4 rRoadway Maintenance / Traffic Field Operations, Transportation
+ v' M( m$ v9 }1 i3 [& e•        Asphalt/concrete repairs, cracksealing, and paving.
•        Performing structural concrete/steel duties on bridge maintenance (must be able to work heights).
, t# N1 b" @3 X" \8 ^6 n! ]' G•        Pouring, spreading, tamping and leveling soil, sand, gravel and concrete.
5 S% F. @0 Q) a3 k  u•        Working in traffic during street construction/maintenance projects.
•        Installation, maintenance and removal of road markings, traffic / detour control devices.
& h/ j7 s( y! r. XRecreation Facilities Branch, Community Services
•        Golf course, driving range, and park maintenance including turf mowing, fertilizer and pesticide application.
•        Internments at cemetaries; concrete pouring of foundations and markers; monument restoration.
•        Operating and performing minor maintenance with equipment such as: small hand tools, push lawn mowers, trimmers, edgers, small rototillers, and chain saws.
* z; o" T9 b) X•        Set up and take down of furniture and equipment for events and bookings at Recreation Facilities.
2 I" B' |/ o+ f8 r/ }: ]•        Assists with on-going general facility maintenance and cleaning at Recreation Facilities.
- f1 y1 U0 W0 c$ uFunctions of all positions:
7 N7 `& v4 N+ I5 X# I9 N; M•        Loading and unloading materials from trucks.
•        Assisting tradesman and other more experienced staff & performing other related duties as required.
Job Requirements:
7 c7 b* B5 P/ G/ v  G$ @•        Completion of the eighth school grade or equivalent.  Must be indicated on application/resume.
9 j* W/ S1 E! d* l# \  V( v3 v/ J•        Possession of a valid Motor Vehicle Operator's License. Must be indicated on application/resume.
•        Applicants may be tested, and where required to operate a City vehicle, must attain a City of Edmonton driving permit upon appointment.
•        Physically capable of performing heavy labour work for extended periods of time under various weather and traffic conditions.
•        Manual dexterity to operate simple hand and/or power tools and small equipment.
•        Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
& ^, O- S  b+ z& j•        Team player & self-motivated, possibility of working alone on scheduled shift.
+ Y, v% b+ i# n* b8 J, HHOURS OF WORK: Up to 40 hours per week. Hours of work will vary with each position.  These positions may be subject to shift work, providing coverage 7 days per week.  Please indicate if you’re interested in shift work.
1 G! h+ D/ f' D3 S7 w6 vSALARY RANGE: 10M, Salary Grade: 013, starting at $15.11 (Hourly).  Rates are based on employee status and length of service. The rates quoted are in accordance with an agreement between the Union and the City.
