EDMONTON — Southgate Centre today began a $108 million expansion to accommodate more than 30 new retailers and restaurants.

The two-year project, facing 111th Street, will add 126,000 square feet of leasable space on the ground floor — and two levels of parking above.. X" i2 m$ F; ~( Z2 V5 C
$ c3 _7 `6 D( g“Part of the redevelopment will include enhanced site lighting and closed-circuit TV security systems monitored 24 hours a day, seven days a week,” said Southgate general manager Paul Fairbridge.* M" a1 X& r) {6 R* Q# w

It also will include hotel-quality washrooms and private sitting rooms for nursing mothers.+ I4 k" l& U) u% r) b7 i

Southgate, a 36-year-old mall located south and west of 51st Avenue and 111th Street, now has 130 stores and services. It is owned by Ivanhoe Cambridge, based in Montreal.
