I'd like to invite people to join our new Community Dialogue project. y. [1 e1 B/ E% T7 W% }
In phase 1 we have a couple of extra spots available for Community
' U# ~- y# k, @& jEngagement Training.: s. O' n6 v) A* E! B2 n& S
+ S8 D: E9 o3 I# ?1 P5 f' nWe can accept a few people to join us this Friday (3~6 p.m.)and Saturday,
0 j# e ^0 a" F. w2 d9 R+ R( j(9~3 p.m. ) to improve skills in building multicultural neighbourhood; P2 E' H1 A( G& K2 c0 `
groups. We're especially focused on developing groups that can work4 K7 C: l3 j, a2 y
together across cultures to create community projects and Action for Healthy9 c( C& w& m" {9 j
Communities can often support these projects with funding of up to $1,000.( [* n* ], r! d& c+ h* ^

Pacific, "Bougainville Sky" is the story of how music helped overcome years
$ Y! l% w' K: M" ~' ?of fear and distrust to rebuild peace in a war torn society. When bitter
5 s, R# C1 E* L; H0 @& R; X% aconflict on Bougainville Island ended in 1997, the combatants invited the8 D# h6 t" s- l
international community to send in a Peacekeeping force on one condition:
3 [. D0 E0 b0 w* S: Y, pthey come unarmed. Amongst the Peacekeepers was young Australian songwriter
% v& Z7 h7 |0 GIain Campbell Smith, whose music and radio program became a legend on the* w# D r- O% u4 y( l
island and contributed to the success of the world¹s first unarmed
# V' G- _) o6 T1 rinternational peacekeeping operation.

4 ^6 ~- q$ L( Z1 I0 t+ MThis beautifully shot film allows the Bougainvillean people to tell their3 G9 A6 ?6 f0 L! W
own story and captures the struggles, the strength and the humor of a people
0 H Z. N& k) p9 L$ F: Awho brought themselves back from the chaos of war. At a time when our TV# B. @ N9 J+ G% J2 X/ ~' W
screens are filled with images from the interventions in Iraq and, @3 _* V, O/ s
Afghanistan, the success story of the Bougainville peace process seems
( k1 B# q9 {# s& C% Simprobable: an unarmed international intervention fostering local customs9 n( U8 c; |' }; G1 V1 o6 I
and music to strengthen an indigenous-run peace process < and it worked!

According to Smith "the fact that we were unarmed was critical to the( q E' q5 Y: }
success of the peace process in Bougainville. It set the tone for the whole: E2 o* S2 l/ j3 C* ~7 j \
process, and put responsibility for the safety of the Peacekeepers in the
- L2 N# {0 K/ d' K6 n. I1 I# khands of the militants and the people, rather than the other way around.0 a* Y. b3 d$ B" M* \
Also, because we were unarmed we couldn't scare anyone into doing anything,
& m' O! p5 w6 E5 m2 c f7 gso we learned to communicate instead. That's where music came in."
