I'd like to invite people to join our new Community Dialogue project.
9 g1 F) `$ [: h. ?3 pIn phase 1 we have a couple of extra spots available for Community
2 g0 T3 d$ G8 i: C. C4 mEngagement Training.( C) p7 F) {. H+ K
/ u9 I4 t4 E9 I0 m6 L1 q% `- W6 p6 eWe can accept a few people to join us this Friday (3~6 p.m.)and Saturday,
" Y4 N2 C! f C) x5 T6 R(9~3 p.m. ) to improve skills in building multicultural neighbourhood2 Q0 I7 |5 d/ X6 ]6 c
groups. We're especially focused on developing groups that can work% v9 L; @5 u5 G& Q( E
together across cultures to create community projects and Action for Healthy
- Q1 B% p$ P }; D' gCommunities can often support these projects with funding of up to $1,000.

% m6 {4 e; k2 D5 mSet on the remote Papua New Guinea Island of Bougainville in the South
/ L! m1 b9 V0 E1 C6 j4 C7 s( l1 tPacific, "Bougainville Sky" is the story of how music helped overcome years8 p/ ]1 e, g. }% c
of fear and distrust to rebuild peace in a war torn society. When bitter* q' b* ]5 f' n5 C2 F
conflict on Bougainville Island ended in 1997, the combatants invited the# n2 I" j% D% r! L+ _
international community to send in a Peacekeeping force on one condition:$ U6 O2 g+ j c
they come unarmed. Amongst the Peacekeepers was young Australian songwriter9 y5 s y S: o" {1 B& {
Iain Campbell Smith, whose music and radio program became a legend on the
; V: Z* R% j% P% e3 _) K8 |island and contributed to the success of the world¹s first unarmed- o' @! L0 O! K& U+ z
international peacekeeping operation.
% x3 k4 T4 J) M$ U5 P
5 g$ z Z6 J4 ^% F' t1 VThis beautifully shot film allows the Bougainvillean people to tell their
) `$ a' r+ @: j" M* o& Uown story and captures the struggles, the strength and the humor of a people
, L7 ]3 N# l" s8 zwho brought themselves back from the chaos of war. At a time when our TV
" w! t! a2 y4 U/ Uscreens are filled with images from the interventions in Iraq and
& ~& \; i9 v- I1 g0 [Afghanistan, the success story of the Bougainville peace process seems
, `7 h' w- A, e. U. }* Qimprobable: an unarmed international intervention fostering local customs5 ]0 |; o% q7 z. I
and music to strengthen an indigenous-run peace process < and it worked!

According to Smith "the fact that we were unarmed was critical to the" D. U) y5 W, q- O
success of the peace process in Bougainville. It set the tone for the whole* u+ ^- ?; J+ s6 h
process, and put responsibility for the safety of the Peacekeepers in the" U+ t5 {- t7 t w2 M
hands of the militants and the people, rather than the other way around. b" v' _" Z. Y% Z9 G
Also, because we were unarmed we couldn't scare anyone into doing anything,
k1 ~; E* v9 Zso we learned to communicate instead. That's where music came in."' w( u3 i5 ~6 ^; _& G/ N G
