In such financial service, I observe the common sense rule: 1) If I trust a professional, I do my home work first, then I will stick to the advise, and I accept that such a professional makes some minor mistakes, but not the serious ones. 2) If I don't do my home work, and I trust someone, I would have nobody else but myself to blame. 3) RESP stuff, my rule of thumb is transparency, control and liquidity. Those sales professionals failed reasonably bad when I picked up the phone and asked questions. Later on, I have to open a self-directed account to manage on my own.
