How to respond to "How are you?", "What's up?", and other conversation starters
+ V! c: o8 x' B+ ~7 D
3 e3 z$ M# Z( I' iThere are a few questions that English speakers ask at the beginning of a conversation. These questions are simple tools to find out if there are any interesting topics to discuss.2 X" N4 t0 `4 p' q' k6 _9 E& S2 j/ Y. Y

1 h0 M  ]# v, T6 q0 l( kYou've certainly heard these questions, but you might be confused about how to answer. Here's a list of common answers to the questions "How are you?", "How's it going?", "What's up?", and "What's happening?"
- }$ C- R; I) \
* r+ s. G. t, N; r( mHow are you?. T: w7 L, z- M" v" b
Fine., j: |/ J4 z- ?( ^- p1 e

! V2 D3 }' Z+ f. n# SThis is a simple, straight answer. If you don't say anything else, though, it might be a signal that you don't want to continue the conversation.
4 R7 Z  Z. w) L: `0 C6 w; e( D8 Z3 s/ k$ W$ u
Not bad.
# m. o( k4 n5 n' ~* S; N
, G0 q$ W& E  L! xThis is a more friendly-sounding answer than "fine".
3 q9 i+ ?) T* r8 g( ^
! R, `% a6 B: CFine, thanks.
  L; P' o  _  J( ~* ^
3 W; o' t7 ^! w1 X. l5 BThis answer is formal. You might answer this way if someone you don't know, like a waiter at a restaurant, asks how you are., T9 u0 U, O4 i! |! F! n8 {
% m; V' a; o" ~6 ]7 j
Very well, thanks.( m( y8 L. d5 O! {
9 f6 y) A* b# X6 X6 n1 C
A person who likes to be grammatically proper might answer this way. Technically, the question "How...?" should be answered with an adverb. However, a lot of English speakers don't know or care about this. The people who do are "by the books" types who insist on using grammatically correct language.* W7 Q3 T) \+ k6 W7 e4 Z) n0 V

% G& T% ]' [9 l6 L3 f1 ZPretty good.
" R* K3 _( L' Y2 A, e8 j2 ~; u2 B% F: ]" x/ t2 _
If you don't care as much about grammar, you can answer "Good" or "Pretty good". It's more common and much, much more casual.' p, ]: \& b1 }+ V: W6 p
1 [% k4 ?! f- p: b3 `/ O! R
Great! How are you doing?& {- A1 A- x6 S3 t$ V
5 Z5 X, ~. @2 M  {: r. [* A. G- u" ]
This is an enthusiastic, excited response. It's always good to ask a question back to the other person if you want to continue the conversation.! o; x, m! U# \

1 D  i2 A4 x4 b% u" X$ iI'm hanging in there.
) U7 b0 x  u1 {: M, g
$ Y  u8 l, ^! M) R$ L- N, l" uThis answer makes it sound like you're having a tough day.
2 R3 K! ~; e0 l; ^& t9 g
9 ~- d, a/ J7 O' l- TI've been better.
" i* B. {+ L1 f" a
2 Q  e4 @6 R9 B7 {6 GPeople usually give positive answers to the question "How are you?" If you give a negative answer like this one, it usually means that you want to tell the listener your sad story. So they'll usually ask what's wrong:
9 z! X- ~: m. n9 I0 w7 B( t9 s
+ r7 p7 _1 Q+ k3 q/ tA: How are you?
8 i% _# S- h0 |) x3 k" X7 c; g% Q  k: z% F6 H

A: What's wrong?
  t0 k8 U& n" J% h& P3 P

How's it going?9 h" A1 l! _- p8 J4 \
This question is similar to "How are you". The answers discussed above all work for "How's it going?" as well., z3 o& W# ]- v9 i% P& U

6 j1 l5 k$ {! y2 QHere's another answer that will also work for "How's it going", but not for "How are you?"
: K( F( l8 Y8 n8 [, Q

3 U; ~( q% @# O  ], k* D6 y) S9 e$ D4 }  F  F1 ]9 Y) K& e/ U% \* W+ M
This is a friendly, polite answer that's suitable for coworkers, clients, and acquaintances that you haven't seen in a while.
# N6 A- |+ C- M1 b" E8 e" I0 W8 F# y% {- o8 O; `. c$ n1 ^* d
What's up?
8 m: ]9 v) @# E# @This question means "What's happening in your life?" But you don't have to answer honestly. If you don't want to start a long conversation, you can use one of these standard replies:6 d. T- e0 b; A8 P; ~
: V/ b  y6 c- z# i% Z
Nothing much.
! ^/ Z" d- c( v( A+ ~* _$ X8 y3 r/ y
% R. S# Y1 y7 f* w2 j9 kThis is the most common answer. You can follow it by sharing something interesting that's happening: "Nothing much. Just getting ready for Vanessa's graduation."; K6 A& o9 ^3 j6 q
" @3 ?! r3 Q3 w# x
Not a lot.
  t# g8 Y8 T+ J3 M% A+ p4 h1 C% Z. [8 _/ B& M; J, B3 o; t
This is another really common answer. It's just a bit fresher than "Nothing much" because it's a little less common.
* n3 j/ }7 O  B9 X3 P3 \0 f( ]' B. [  R
Nothing./ ~+ Q1 A+ Y) F

This is more to-the-point. It might make you seem a little angry or rude.

我很烦有人这么打招呼,感觉是小流氓和黑人专用问候语,我一般都回应,“我操你妈”
