　　North country scene:
                                                                                               
　　A hundred leagues locked in ice,

　　A thousand leagues of whirling snow.

　　Both sides of the Great Wall
% _' V, T$ r! l5 p+ e
- r8 ~- K* R6 M0 m1 u- G　　One single white immensity.

　　The Yellow River"s swift current
2 ]# E- X) V! C* p- c# U( q! Z' W% M
4 i% g5 z/ ^9 z　　Is stilled from end to end.

　　The mountains dance like silver snakes
" V7 Z' g$ J! |& g# ^2 H
1 S; x3 [$ i* ?1 u% C　　And the highlands* charge like wax-hued elephants,

　　Vying with heaven in stature.

  Y% `9 E0 C4 I: ]0 `# M: R　　On a fine day, the land,
) n% O1 |7 ^8 u) |
　　Clad in white, adorned in red,
- h/ Q( U6 x# c* x
　　Grows more enchanting.

/ K4 B/ j7 ~( R) t$ ^' q　　This land so rich in beauty

& K; t0 O9 s/ D; m1 m# Q! ~　　Has made countless heroes bow in homage.

8 @3 \4 r8 W8 }- o7 i) v% o　　But alas! Chin Shih-huang and Han Wu-ti
( p4 A* [# i; x9 l  z' N7 m
　　Were lacking in literary grace,
; o) C7 j* O7 i4 L( \
　　And Tang Tai-tsung and Sung Tai-tsu

% @8 Y% V, R) |/ i' Z; k　　Had little poetry in their souls;
　　And Genghis Khan,
/ I- O, L+ v: B2 ?, O& ~/ M
　　Proud Son of Heaven for a day,
8 p3 o3 ^& a! y; u
　　Knew only shooting eagles, bow outstretched

9 B7 ]' z  H' A3 N7 h8 v" @  C# R　　All are past and gone!

　　For truly great men

　　Look to this age alone.
