　　A hundred leagues locked in ice,

( l) L! j2 c: u+ ~+ n　　A thousand leagues of whirling snow.

- C" Q7 T6 g/ g: U$ u7 ^2 i　　Both sides of the Great Wall

　　One single white immensity.
( t- I- L! d5 O3 W2 k
　　The Yellow River"s swift current
: z3 N: i  ^6 t0 S& |6 `
　　Is stilled from end to end.

　　The mountains dance like silver snakes

5 y5 R9 n; \' N% |% l6 C. h0 j+ ~　　And the highlands* charge like wax-hued elephants,

　　Vying with heaven in stature.

　　Clad in white, adorned in red,

9 _( m, i2 H& m4 c$ i# R- o3 Z9 p: t　　Grows more enchanting.

　　This land so rich in beauty

6 y; O. ?# K7 n' c# k　　Has made countless heroes bow in homage.

+ i- Q4 _) Q9 S* P　　But alas! Chin Shih-huang and Han Wu-ti
5 G# q* _/ G4 O- _) o
　　Were lacking in literary grace,
& R1 O' B# b. x" ?0 N+ J
　　And Tang Tai-tsung and Sung Tai-tsu
' X- M2 n! I3 x# ~9 |
# X/ l# c" `" K! o7 V' w　　Had little poetry in their souls;
  t" o- s: B- `0 K" p　　And Genghis Khan,

4 v; V% P$ z$ ?/ K7 E　　Proud Son of Heaven for a day,

　　Knew only shooting eagles, bow outstretched

　　Look to this age alone.
