谈英语俚语

谈英语俚语

0 U7 R6 O& ?8 d! O; {: }& M/ P
在中文报章杂志上,常看到一些英语俚语(口语)的中文翻译。诸如「黑羊」、「踢水桶」、「阿奇里斯
$ z: ?8 M4 G' t5 a. D# ^之踝」等等。其实这些译文都是来自英语「black sheep」、「kick the bucket」和「Achille's heel」。
! s3 |- |- R7 s$ L) d/ A若是这些译文不附加原文予以解释,恐怕「迷惑」的读者,不在少数。这不是影响了语文的沟通目的吗?为此,介绍一些这类的英语俚语(在此称之为「特别字眼」),也许对某些读者会有点助益!
  I  u9 k* z0 P4 \* _2 s: w5 Z  I5 }; }; H( s' x- s8 s
(1) empty suit:9 |2 V  D5 P2 S+ s2 X
指不重要的人或假冒者 ( an unimportant person or a phony) 多半用在商业上,当名词用。
$ ?7 X1 |' \2 z(这本是business term,指虽然穿著整齐全套的 business suit,却不能干、没有能力,不受尊敬的人。)
" y1 I4 K- ^8 p1 @5 R, l例如:' A! ?$ B' P, e& c9 b1 Q
An empty suit generally gets no attention from the public.% v: s- t* d& E- d
(一位虚伪不实的人,通常不会受到大众的注意。)$ Q% p9 N5 F/ D1 L( r
Mr. Lee acts like a big shot, but he is just an empty suit.
& G) d1 F, N/ _5 l; x/ C(李先生装著像位大人物,但他只是不重要的人。)- y' z3 Y( M, b. t+ W
虽然这句话,多半只用单数,但有时也用复数:2 X- C! Q  T$ ^, @
The company is filled with a lot of empty suits.
, j! P  g; q( s1 M4 P! M" v(这公司有许多虚伪不重要的人)
( z2 s# S' B2 @; e+ _$ a2 ?7 m- M(2) fair-haired boy:
9 X5 V! S8 c8 z+ u: [指得宠的人,也就是宠儿,多半指男人(a fa-vorite person usually referring to a man)
0 U& [4 M: x. l(通常用单数,当名词用)' e) `2 k/ [. U% ?) ]4 I' v
例如:
3 [2 Z; c: `5 P0 aMr. Cheney has become a fair-haired boy to the presi-dent.
/ N3 `9 R8 T" n1 v; j- l; l( m( Cheney 先生变成总统的宠儿。)# A* Y# |+ W$ U* \% z
Not being a fair-haired boy, Mr. Wong never gets pay-raises and promotions.
8 P8 [! ]3 x3 h& y" F$ u2 e(王先生不得宠,从未得到加薪和升级。)5 }  D: k: I& `2 |. c
有时也可用复数:  j/ d0 p+ y0 F" h7 s
Mr. Bush selected two former fair-haired boys for his cabinet.
9 A! s! R0 ]/ Z& f# J% f% L(Bush 先生为他的内阁选用两位过去的宠儿。)
7 r5 c4 t/ n: o- OFair-haired boys tend to receive special treatment by their bosses./ x9 \7 \  T6 u* O7 _
(得宠的人,较会受到他们上司的特别待遇。)
/ ~' O, Y' _, _" c1 }. N/ ~7 R(但没有 fair-haired girl 的说法); P7 C& _3 H; D' n- N
(3) fishing expedition:4 [& ?! t1 Q1 v- `; D6 D4 I
为了搜罗新闻材料而进行盘问或调查(Try to ask questions to get more useful information)
5 i9 o% `) ~! k8 N(这句话本是 legal term,当名词用,多半用单数)( K% p. `, B4 W; f/ J5 G+ C9 [
例如:
$ J7 k/ j$ D6 K& RThe judge said the prosecutor was on a fishing expedi-tion and stopped him.
5 ^. F2 E2 @$ Z" Q8 f(法官说原告为搜罗罪证而进行调查,要他停止。)
  D$ `; m# {  \- @5 ZThe police are on a fishing expedition in order to solve(或 resolve)the murder case." V* \/ c9 s6 u6 }1 V
(警察进行调查盘问,以便侦破谋杀案。)
3 _# t) ]# B0 R; L(注:solve 和 resolve 都有「解决」的意思,但通常solve用在「问题上」,resolve 用在「争执」上。solve the problem 而 resolve the conflict)
8 c' D: A( j4 `* ^* c4 ~( VThe reporter went on a fishing expedition about the president's involvement in the Iraq War.5 b& r7 L4 ?& c9 u
(记者搜罗有关总统卷入伊拉克战争的新闻资料。)
5 H2 w+ }2 Z4 J$ _, k4 ^! {偶尔也有人用复数:
. e, K' [# {6 @7 n. E0 ~  n  oSeveral fishing expeditions have been made before he decides to run for office.
4 d7 s* J) t$ l, c* a(在他决定竞选之前,他做了数次的收集资料调查。)/ E* e2 I" X: E3 |& L) J7 t* `9 }
(4) filthy rich:; j5 P9 Q6 c$ D* K
意思是很富有,很有钱。(very wealthy)
5 d: f% E. ~1 ?3 R(未必是不义之财或肮脏钱), l' k, }* C) B4 [- S4 O1 e- q
多半当形容词用。例如:4 z2 k# ^1 D: e; |! S
With a beautiful mansion and an expensive car, Mr. B must be filthy rich.
5 X& l& C- a* O3 h/ K0 w/ h( B先生住著富丽堂皇的大厦,开著昂贵的汽车,他一定很有钱。)
: y: Q4 N7 n8 A# q/ u, ~Despite being filthy rich, Mr. C is still leading his life in a frugal way.! l8 {6 I$ q* L9 m/ E! N
(尽管 C 先生很富有,他仍然过著简朴的生活。), [4 x, j) e; k
A filthy rich person tends to have a superiority complex toward others.
% F' T" X4 ]2 y5 K: K7 Y* g$ O(有钱者对他人有优越感的倾向。)* W4 Y+ }: `, N6 w; |1 Y3 O
Filthy rich people are not necessarily well-respected unless they possess noble characters.. I9 I; r- I$ ?- Z! M' b1 `% U
(有钱人未必受人尊敬,除非有高尚的品格。)& l1 s( }8 u8 s9 h& L: M3 h
(注:但没有 cleanly rich 的说法). D- i1 A  i/ ~  W5 O- j3 R
(5) fairy godmother:
  |# e; C1 R  y7 ^! v, A指及时慷慨提供帮助的人(someone who unex-pectedly gives generous assistance)
( Q, S/ `. ?3 y# K& G( c3 p4 n(多半指有钱的女人). o" t9 l1 H- T, B8 K5 W( [' _
(这是来自 fairy tale, 指女人有 magical power;因为童话故事里没有男人,故不说 fairy godfather。当名词用。例如:
; w  x6 G" a  J) w; fMr. A has a fairy godmother who gave him fifty thou-sand dollars.  v. ]" H1 N  }. M
(一位有钱的女人,帮助A先生五万元。)
; a9 N( c% g3 J% V% r) ~After lifelong savings, Mrs. B donated all her money to a charity organization like a fairy godmother.' K' p; o5 L( B, N6 p% ]
(B 太太将一生的积蓄全部捐给慈善机构。)
. z& I0 `  Q. u- \有时也用复数:* _, r) D1 s6 E$ O9 Q* E4 K
Only business women can act as fairy godmothers.' F: w  q; E8 K! a  i$ y
(只有商场上的女人才能提供金钱帮助他人。)
& k, @# d) L" L" O( ?+ EIn Chinese society very few fairy godmothers can be discovered.6 }, E# X8 [5 H! s
(在中国社会里,很少有钱的女人慷慨捐助。)/ T0 q1 \% [6 ~1 u, p
) [4 C5 x4 V$ x) e3 A

' P% B: v& N0 u6)eye opener:
( @8 Y: T3 i  i. J# ]! i0 ~指令人瞠目的事物或使人恍然大悟的发现。也就是惊人的新发现或启示(shocking news or revela-tion)3 V, C+ B* n6 Y) M8 |5 I7 b2 s
(当名词用;通常只用单数)8 I. D. r5 z- x! \3 A6 e
例如:
9 b+ p3 n2 ^3 s+ Y1 J$ Z0 uYour wonderful article on marriage was certainly an eye opener to many youngsters.9 w% Q" b+ v2 c" N) V1 G
(你那篇有关婚姻的好文章,使许多年轻人获得启示。)
) p8 V* J. ?* o! H% {9 Q1 oMr. Wong's speech about U.S./ China policy seemed to be an eye opener.
7 x) j4 ~' x8 ^$ O2 L" K0 v! z5 e(王先生的中美政策讲演使人恍然大悟。)5 L! c3 E; n* x- m
The popular World Journal in North America is an eye opener for many Chinese immigrants.1 S" }, h. F- F$ W  D4 p1 i
(大名鼎鼎的世界日报是北美许多中国移民惊喜的新发现。)
/ S6 N% Y1 y, |( RSome American customs and ways of thinking can be an eye opener to many Chinese people.: j4 n6 S: b5 r9 D) h
(美国一些的风俗习惯和想法,让许多老中感到惊奇。)
& V3 P! H2 n" d" j) w(7) hot dog:
2 `: ~$ K8 ], l% w% j; l指喜欢卖弄冒险的举动,或爱出锋头的惊险动作。(one who performs showy or dangerous stunts ; a show off) ( 可当名词或动词用)
$ D7 ?5 l0 O/ k例如:% F! K/ B* g. _( F) f6 h/ Y+ ?. ?# w, j
Some young people are hot dogs behind the wheel, speeding all the time.
; z* z' \/ Q. i4 S1 j1 a* x; w- E: u(一些年轻人开车时,常做些超速的惊险动作。)
8 ?! p' Z/ G1 f9 N6 ]7 B$ Y* y(这里的 hot dogs = hot doggers)/ J  B1 f* c# Q0 }# {
In front of his girlfriend, the teenager was trying to hot dog.
4 ?& [$ F' g0 c" E(在女友面前,年轻人做出一些卖弄技巧的花招。)
" \" w4 @; t4 Z7 v8 S$ f(动词时态是:hot dogged, hot dogging)
! p; b% Y) ^7 R4 ]/ D4 s7 ^5 kDuring the air force show, one of the pilots was a dan-gerous hot dogging flyer.
$ ?; R: @8 B$ X) M5 f  E: n(在空军表演时,一位飞行员做惊险的飞行动作。)$ }, N8 N/ ?" F$ i- Y
也指真正的热狗食物:
$ I, D$ ]7 u% \4 u# GThe hot dog is one of the favorite fast food in the U.S.6 O/ o2 T) g& d/ n4 }' P& Q+ h
(在美国热狗是一种受欢迎的快餐。); h& p# p3 {7 ^* `9 Q
也可表达欣赏的心情:; `+ m) t  |* I0 h) b
Hot dog ! What great news for me.
# e# T5 c- t: @7 ?(真棒!对我来说是好消息。)
& {2 u) v2 V- i2 H4 V. n& t(8)eager beaver:" x- F6 k" S; n6 J
指做事非常卖力的人,也许为了给人良好的印象。(one who likes to work harder in order to impress others)$ Y8 i0 _! m4 @4 @  o5 x
(这句话是来自二次世界大战,新兵为了讨好长官而卖力工作。)9 D. u1 ]! Z1 P5 A
(当名词用,可指男女)
8 Y* D; J4 Z: c" I: l1 s例如:
. Z% C- [4 q' y/ J; t% QJohn seems an eager beaver because he always comes early and leaves late.
) }2 g/ ?  ]( `0 Y' l5 @- P0 K(John 似乎是十分卖力的人,因为他总是来得早,走得晚。)
4 X. i7 U, `# [" oBeing an eager beaver, he sometimes is not well-liked by his colleagues.$ z7 w( `1 R  s6 {" I7 E: W
(他做事异常卖力,有时不受同事喜欢。)
+ |# F" a: L, p3 v& n2 RDoes Mr. B have a long-lasting attitude as an eager beaver?
3 E# N0 H- Z( C, F: o(B 先生做事非常卖力,那是长久以来的态度吗?)
3 U7 s  _* y  C- Z% ?, E) s, ]% QYou may find some eager beavers in any organizations.
: T/ j4 @0 \) k" t(在任何机关里,你总会发现一些对上司竭力讨好的人。); R) t6 G7 k$ j0 I% L, j  G& `6 ^
(9)doubting Thomas:8 x1 P3 \) y5 G. K- B3 |5 N
这是指不信任所有的人,几乎是一种怀疑主义者。(one who is always doubtful toward others)
" L; ^0 E9 v$ r(这原出于圣经,因耶稣门徒 Thomas 不信基督的复活)6 r8 X- c" [% X8 _) {4 j
(当名词用)) T$ w& q  p* N6 j3 X& s
例如:, P3 |/ S: f$ t1 r
I am not trying to be a doubting Thomas about Mr. Wong's keeping promise.
0 P5 s9 r+ m5 i  _(我不怀疑王先生的承诺。)
4 d) q* k( ]1 HThere must have been some unpleasant experiences for Mr. B to become a doubting Thomas.
  P, W% g% P; S$ Z6 p+ z; ~(B 先生不信任他人,也许因为有不愉快的经验所致。)
3 z; D) `" `* R! V. x也可用复数:
3 d2 v) r, T# o2 yMy friends are doubting Thomases toward many Chi-nese business people.
) [9 l5 V& W6 G+ F( e(我朋友对许多中国商人不信任。)* B3 h; t6 A# s4 j9 L/ U  C* R
If there are too many doubting Thomases in our society, people will lose confidence with one another.
3 {8 E8 j$ H8 J$ [(假如社会上有太多的怀疑主义者,那么人与人之间的信心就会丧失。)7 C8 S6 q( S2 h$ _2 J. ?" v
(10)dragon lady:
$ v  m2 L. n2 A/ \) a指生气、不友善或凶险的女人。(angry, un-friendly or dangerous woman)(当名词用)
2 }1 K' ~4 g4 x: |例如:
% q7 Q8 K$ ?% g" G4 q1 YThe chairman's secretary is so snoffy and nasty that she is considered a dragon lady./ B0 K: F; b, ]  G, |6 I
(主席的秘书,很自大,脾气差,她被视为凶恶的女人。)! z% [- z/ p( }% e' p  O
I am sure no woman likes to be called a dragon lady." [+ j+ Y6 E5 h, C
(我相信没有女人喜欢被称为凶恶的女人。)3 t) f0 U! S  i
Should your girlfriend happens to be a dragon lady, are you going to breakup with her?
# e0 M, c3 K; h(假如你的女友成了凶恶的女人,你要与她分手吗?)$ M. m5 `3 s7 k5 Y& N& H- f
也可用复数:
" `! D0 c8 A! C" _* {4 nThere may be many dragon ladies in our community.0 b) m' ^, C1 a/ b
(在我们社区里也许有不少凶女人。)6 t4 Z. p; P/ e
注:老外指凶恶男人,不用 dragon gentleman,利用英国侦探小说里的中国恶棍傅满洲(Fu Manchu)为代表
