谈英语俚语

谈英语俚语

# `7 ~+ r- E2 ]& A0 ?8 ^9 v在中文报章杂志上,常看到一些英语俚语(口语)的中文翻译。诸如「黑羊」、「踢水桶」、「阿奇里斯
0 B1 f& t, e0 d2 l之踝」等等。其实这些译文都是来自英语「black sheep」、「kick the bucket」和「Achille's heel」。! E6 [9 |( j! ^# d$ `! O. H
若是这些译文不附加原文予以解释,恐怕「迷惑」的读者,不在少数。这不是影响了语文的沟通目的吗?为此,介绍一些这类的英语俚语(在此称之为「特别字眼」),也许对某些读者会有点助益!! N% V0 b. h( k! m

9 G% S2 }: \- U' R0 V+ _. I, w* J(1) empty suit:2 ?2 L! p* X7 h  q
指不重要的人或假冒者 ( an unimportant person or a phony) 多半用在商业上,当名词用。; f$ _# J+ N' V2 G) M) w! f' T
(这本是business term,指虽然穿著整齐全套的 business suit,却不能干、没有能力,不受尊敬的人。)
' I. {7 S; z9 a; O/ }例如:: K7 R( Q* B3 o* z# S" q7 b
An empty suit generally gets no attention from the public.1 R! z; H& D: V- o3 @+ w- w5 ?
(一位虚伪不实的人,通常不会受到大众的注意。)* o! I2 R' N0 @% {, M( c# ?
Mr. Lee acts like a big shot, but he is just an empty suit.
7 T# D' e0 o: z5 }8 s(李先生装著像位大人物,但他只是不重要的人。)
. d% f/ W- _! f& {) G. n虽然这句话,多半只用单数,但有时也用复数:4 F  f3 t0 m, Q; u: m  C
The company is filled with a lot of empty suits.

(2) fair-haired boy:# |2 z) b" A0 G
指得宠的人,也就是宠儿,多半指男人(a fa-vorite person usually referring to a man)
8 W$ M. w1 i1 r4 a) p; F9 A(通常用单数,当名词用)
* b/ h+ |) X" s, O' }( t% n9 }例如:1 d: _9 C' O9 W, l: j* s8 y
Mr. Cheney has become a fair-haired boy to the presi-dent.& }* ~9 B( _5 e! z/ O
( Cheney 先生变成总统的宠儿。)
8 @! c, ~! i, x2 f/ Y9 n2 d/ A( n2 XNot being a fair-haired boy, Mr. Wong never gets pay-raises and promotions.$ O7 F3 P) b& m+ `
(王先生不得宠,从未得到加薪和升级。)
' T$ c4 t% `" d& u( c& e有时也可用复数:
* A  ]- i0 T' B7 y4 BMr. Bush selected two former fair-haired boys for his cabinet." c& }+ H0 f8 Q* T4 Q. n2 K9 n& ~
(Bush 先生为他的内阁选用两位过去的宠儿。)
; p, k- l7 R9 ]. a$ g+ qFair-haired boys tend to receive special treatment by their bosses.
8 o: x" j. ]' ?& e6 [8 y. n(得宠的人,较会受到他们上司的特别待遇。)
: t; i( V& I: t& l+ T, A5 I  s( ^(但没有 fair-haired girl 的说法)
3 Y- F/ h1 L6 A: U# T7 {0 d* p(3) fishing expedition:& R% V3 M* @: Z0 B
为了搜罗新闻材料而进行盘问或调查(Try to ask questions to get more useful information)
4 I2 M; C/ u- W  a(这句话本是 legal term,当名词用,多半用单数)
3 Y7 \/ j' E% ^4 j$ ~: I1 z例如:
3 d2 w0 p/ s3 xThe judge said the prosecutor was on a fishing expedi-tion and stopped him.0 m. @0 O8 l5 F4 A; C
(法官说原告为搜罗罪证而进行调查,要他停止。)
* @! f5 E" l: m; h8 m  }# J+ O) CThe police are on a fishing expedition in order to solve(或 resolve)the murder case.1 I; q, T. U2 k( S4 f! G( t
(警察进行调查盘问,以便侦破谋杀案。)
! ]# B2 }, U) ?(注:solve 和 resolve 都有「解决」的意思,但通常solve用在「问题上」,resolve 用在「争执」上。solve the problem 而 resolve the conflict)
5 \+ o8 E6 n; ], @3 kThe reporter went on a fishing expedition about the president's involvement in the Iraq War.
3 x8 R# C# t7 ~$ ]2 b$ K(记者搜罗有关总统卷入伊拉克战争的新闻资料。)
5 M1 l4 w: B' v# y+ I4 u( B2 [3 I8 w偶尔也有人用复数:
4 s: a# X5 T! VSeveral fishing expeditions have been made before he decides to run for office.
0 H; `" S6 y3 H8 s! g(在他决定竞选之前,他做了数次的收集资料调查。)
5 C' @: t/ y2 _9 V8 c(4) filthy rich:! y5 R' Q  u4 v" M2 ^
意思是很富有,很有钱。(very wealthy)
5 C  l, K% Q/ c. ^4 V(未必是不义之财或肮脏钱)5 F# y% l. S% x7 S
多半当形容词用。例如:
$ M% D5 ]+ s7 |8 x' ~  E' kWith a beautiful mansion and an expensive car, Mr. B must be filthy rich.: _% Z. M5 ~5 y- |" p
( B先生住著富丽堂皇的大厦,开著昂贵的汽车,他一定很有钱。)4 ^1 X% b: a) N6 x
Despite being filthy rich, Mr. C is still leading his life in a frugal way.  V7 E8 R8 G0 X' V1 E8 r
(尽管 C 先生很富有,他仍然过著简朴的生活。)
* _- i3 G4 C) Y8 P% Y& @4 B: zA filthy rich person tends to have a superiority complex toward others." m- m0 v7 n& y( T/ B/ i
(有钱者对他人有优越感的倾向。)
# O) t4 T4 W! o* [9 A0 Y, qFilthy rich people are not necessarily well-respected unless they possess noble characters.5 V& L5 Y4 i8 D: X# t) r! C
(有钱人未必受人尊敬,除非有高尚的品格。)* s! I9 [- D) j7 f1 f6 P
(注:但没有 cleanly rich 的说法)
1 x0 G+ U# X" Q(5) fairy godmother:
& H( F- Q. t# F! `6 X0 Z指及时慷慨提供帮助的人(someone who unex-pectedly gives generous assistance): |/ M0 j, D5 ~! Q
(多半指有钱的女人)! ]6 R; }) w' m+ O8 a
(这是来自 fairy tale, 指女人有 magical power;因为童话故事里没有男人,故不说 fairy godfather。当名词用。例如:
4 ?4 v  [3 J* n( c% EMr. A has a fairy godmother who gave him fifty thou-sand dollars./ `, s( c) ~, B5 |
(一位有钱的女人,帮助A先生五万元。)( K% }$ i* G- W) R
After lifelong savings, Mrs. B donated all her money to a charity organization like a fairy godmother.
( {; x! `# P. [  K7 U(B 太太将一生的积蓄全部捐给慈善机构。)
5 s2 s4 w$ U9 _, k- m有时也用复数:# }" _3 N; S' @% x
Only business women can act as fairy godmothers.
8 y* t/ Y1 y8 f. u* a2 `(只有商场上的女人才能提供金钱帮助他人。)& G1 ?* T" S/ u5 C: N2 v
In Chinese society very few fairy godmothers can be discovered.
$ l" ?3 F$ I  S4 ?) a$ d2 T5 W(在中国社会里,很少有钱的女人慷慨捐助。). t( x  R. _( o- B( I" S. c
0 w4 ]7 b- C* ^9 N% \! i) v9 U9 f

+ y' c2 w4 W6 B( h! y" ?指令人瞠目的事物或使人恍然大悟的发现。也就是惊人的新发现或启示(shocking news or revela-tion)
3 k/ o( R# L% t& F(当名词用;通常只用单数)8 ?1 T% t, H7 Q: E5 h& A
例如:
; C2 A% \) T4 d4 T  V5 e8 X1 a3 l1 YYour wonderful article on marriage was certainly an eye opener to many youngsters.
' l  r" m6 T0 S2 T5 w(你那篇有关婚姻的好文章,使许多年轻人获得启示。)
. q, O, W$ G4 z  g4 xMr. Wong's speech about U.S./ China policy seemed to be an eye opener.
" ~7 |) b& {6 d- m7 L& C4 R1 e(王先生的中美政策讲演使人恍然大悟。)
+ N' X7 M9 N9 L0 j; {( b/ w7 MThe popular World Journal in North America is an eye opener for many Chinese immigrants.
' u8 R" D* o( F5 t5 w(大名鼎鼎的世界日报是北美许多中国移民惊喜的新发现。)
6 ^) J( l# e% W/ |$ e3 ASome American customs and ways of thinking can be an eye opener to many Chinese people.! @" |. l5 U3 @0 a: }
(美国一些的风俗习惯和想法,让许多老中感到惊奇。)% f" t" ?8 ^2 A, b' G% U1 b8 A
(7) hot dog:8 p* d5 N; L) b4 M# x/ P
指喜欢卖弄冒险的举动,或爱出锋头的惊险动作。(one who performs showy or dangerous stunts ; a show off) ( 可当名词或动词用)8 J6 L6 N2 L# ]; c$ A
例如:
& H/ t9 F0 I* ~Some young people are hot dogs behind the wheel, speeding all the time.# L' r2 S% R: r  Z6 G; c# x
(一些年轻人开车时,常做些超速的惊险动作。)
+ ^1 F2 I& N1 b# ]+ t(这里的 hot dogs = hot doggers)
8 X9 X5 d" Z! p) H6 }5 XIn front of his girlfriend, the teenager was trying to hot dog.( y1 ?5 J) j( T! @: ]% l
(在女友面前,年轻人做出一些卖弄技巧的花招。)8 e$ A; n" Z9 Z' D; t
(动词时态是:hot dogged, hot dogging)
; A2 k9 P6 C$ Z. T* b4 F0 P9 v: z) x5 nDuring the air force show, one of the pilots was a dan-gerous hot dogging flyer.
9 }8 X3 u! y$ s1 i5 S: r& \(在空军表演时,一位飞行员做惊险的飞行动作。)
% O8 d4 X7 h6 P0 E2 \, u也指真正的热狗食物:3 p+ j6 H" |- }" G  Y- w$ _4 B
The hot dog is one of the favorite fast food in the U.S.

也可表达欣赏的心情:

(8)eager beaver:& \9 B: d' ]6 S+ G0 B8 J
指做事非常卖力的人,也许为了给人良好的印象。(one who likes to work harder in order to impress others)$ `4 _* Q! {5 R  T, r; Q/ x
(这句话是来自二次世界大战,新兵为了讨好长官而卖力工作。)
0 ~8 c% D8 r" f: f# O7 P(当名词用,可指男女), C5 L+ d. M+ |' X7 N) V  U2 ~
例如:
. R7 v; Y% a( g/ ?/ EJohn seems an eager beaver because he always comes early and leaves late.' W2 m4 ^5 Z# w& h$ d
(John 似乎是十分卖力的人,因为他总是来得早,走得晚。)8 s/ A3 V- a* v2 `- K$ E' N. ~
Being an eager beaver, he sometimes is not well-liked by his colleagues.
/ A% x- C$ Z6 u3 w* @; W, O% @(他做事异常卖力,有时不受同事喜欢。), \( l6 f) Z4 s' a
Does Mr. B have a long-lasting attitude as an eager beaver?* u+ w! H2 r% Q9 w- J3 U; ^/ g& Y
(B 先生做事非常卖力,那是长久以来的态度吗?). X3 [" u2 P, ~- {$ m; Z
You may find some eager beavers in any organizations.
9 b0 G# c4 r1 J, b& {(在任何机关里,你总会发现一些对上司竭力讨好的人。)
% Z( N5 E8 b9 Z8 g: F7 u(9)doubting Thomas:9 I) r% @0 ?% W, U* M  N' h; P
这是指不信任所有的人,几乎是一种怀疑主义者。(one who is always doubtful toward others)& Z1 E% g2 N" a0 {: e# |
(这原出于圣经,因耶稣门徒 Thomas 不信基督的复活)
9 T$ y0 r8 L% L" E+ b(当名词用)
# N/ h/ K5 V$ y9 d# F/ m4 D9 R例如:
9 w: t7 c+ ?. s7 ?I am not trying to be a doubting Thomas about Mr. Wong's keeping promise.
  D$ O; d; m# `! _* g(我不怀疑王先生的承诺。)+ G& N2 r7 P; c1 Y- _# a8 D
There must have been some unpleasant experiences for Mr. B to become a doubting Thomas.. \9 y6 b% C- D+ L2 i
(B 先生不信任他人,也许因为有不愉快的经验所致。)$ T0 X5 E$ U) P; P: `
也可用复数:
7 |$ o2 l8 C  E! I/ TMy friends are doubting Thomases toward many Chi-nese business people.
/ Z. N+ h& t. j0 p; R; G/ C(我朋友对许多中国商人不信任。)
! z4 J' S. v/ o& @If there are too many doubting Thomases in our society, people will lose confidence with one another.+ D* K0 M9 z* k+ O
(假如社会上有太多的怀疑主义者,那么人与人之间的信心就会丧失。)' S. D3 P/ G! ?" M% b# z3 X
(10)dragon lady:9 m+ f1 g& I& V
指生气、不友善或凶险的女人。(angry, un-friendly or dangerous woman)(当名词用)# L- w+ K6 e: y+ [2 l
例如:3 t+ S7 G5 ~' G3 W* t* d3 x
The chairman's secretary is so snoffy and nasty that she is considered a dragon lady.
2 }6 C( e. I9 v  w  ?(主席的秘书,很自大,脾气差,她被视为凶恶的女人。)
$ c3 u4 b0 V! {I am sure no woman likes to be called a dragon lady.
% Q0 M+ `. T/ _: @5 l+ R( [! Q) c- `(我相信没有女人喜欢被称为凶恶的女人。)
- M  ]9 A8 C; s. ^, ~  K8 aShould your girlfriend happens to be a dragon lady, are you going to breakup with her?
1 B- l# Z$ U1 B( z* S(假如你的女友成了凶恶的女人,你要与她分手吗?)9 k' M6 ^  G+ z' E# M5 a6 h- {' n
也可用复数:
6 c7 R4 S, A/ Y0 Z) oThere may be many dragon ladies in our community.; C0 K9 w0 h; C( g) |$ r' C5 o
(在我们社区里也许有不少凶女人。)
1 y4 P& N- h) f2 F8 Z% ^注:老外指凶恶男人,不用 dragon gentleman,利用英国侦探小说里的中国恶棍傅满洲(Fu Manchu)为代表
