谈英语俚语

谈英语俚语! O; g! I! s1 K& D. [( S5 G1 q. E
, R* _9 ?6 g' `! z
( P% m2 W1 T3 a7 w' J8 K& Y" \6 Y/ D
在中文报章杂志上,常看到一些英语俚语(口语)的中文翻译。诸如「黑羊」、「踢水桶」、「阿奇里斯6 g+ I  O/ b" `: O3 g
之踝」等等。其实这些译文都是来自英语「black sheep」、「kick the bucket」和「Achille's heel」。" P- B" P- s7 U
若是这些译文不附加原文予以解释,恐怕「迷惑」的读者,不在少数。这不是影响了语文的沟通目的吗?为此,介绍一些这类的英语俚语(在此称之为「特别字眼」),也许对某些读者会有点助益!8 r- S6 y/ D% G& L$ L: E$ H  B
3 ]$ c5 E% H/ ]% ?/ o7 \
(1) empty suit:  }6 u* Q: ~, V4 Y- M1 E6 z
指不重要的人或假冒者 ( an unimportant person or a phony) 多半用在商业上,当名词用。
1 j6 @. J( t$ Z- I(这本是business term,指虽然穿著整齐全套的 business suit,却不能干、没有能力,不受尊敬的人。)- v+ D% x$ E- K
例如:0 E3 e- d! P6 Z& g  r
An empty suit generally gets no attention from the public.% }2 h/ L2 a" z2 R; I( h5 |0 o
(一位虚伪不实的人,通常不会受到大众的注意。), V. u; f- ^- W0 n
Mr. Lee acts like a big shot, but he is just an empty suit.5 Y  r( d$ G* {* Y# H) X5 z
(李先生装著像位大人物,但他只是不重要的人。); n: [6 [% d$ P3 P+ w  I9 p5 {$ H
虽然这句话,多半只用单数,但有时也用复数:
5 c- {+ O- }0 n& _* R2 O. ~The company is filled with a lot of empty suits.
6 e: z4 s: f6 X  d; e1 I2 c, E(这公司有许多虚伪不重要的人)9 o# y$ o7 s9 g6 ^  X- [
(2) fair-haired boy:
+ J' P- X) K3 _9 }指得宠的人,也就是宠儿,多半指男人(a fa-vorite person usually referring to a man)
# [6 O- {* @4 V# P% `(通常用单数,当名词用)
; L0 ~. t& @3 j  x5 o! z例如:9 f0 J. R; l& W! X
Mr. Cheney has become a fair-haired boy to the presi-dent.3 g% ]# m% A/ q+ i* L# \
( Cheney 先生变成总统的宠儿。)
  }4 c. M* L* c1 E1 D3 s1 GNot being a fair-haired boy, Mr. Wong never gets pay-raises and promotions.
- n" J5 w/ R; K' v' Z7 `5 l(王先生不得宠,从未得到加薪和升级。)
2 C8 \: U2 x* J. F$ l. F, ^& a' K. b有时也可用复数:
+ n$ m" _! `( z5 k$ Y* k% {" RMr. Bush selected two former fair-haired boys for his cabinet.
) x- L* H; @0 U(Bush 先生为他的内阁选用两位过去的宠儿。)' o" q. d, j4 J$ e, q# y
Fair-haired boys tend to receive special treatment by their bosses.* {: `, A' M  F5 u
(得宠的人,较会受到他们上司的特别待遇。)
2 c" k; H4 E7 d8 T/ _(但没有 fair-haired girl 的说法)) R* h3 w) M$ T0 z4 L; ]: D
(3) fishing expedition:
( y- q: e4 K3 V) E3 \$ X为了搜罗新闻材料而进行盘问或调查(Try to ask questions to get more useful information)
/ ^" U# D" P' L9 f, A2 b' I(这句话本是 legal term,当名词用,多半用单数)2 g" |( Z1 R, o, ?* W
例如:( @4 n9 {' i3 m9 h& M
The judge said the prosecutor was on a fishing expedi-tion and stopped him.
8 W! \. H+ m! d0 K1 P. L(法官说原告为搜罗罪证而进行调查,要他停止。)9 }' o, N. c( C* j( L' U
The police are on a fishing expedition in order to solve(或 resolve)the murder case.9 f( N! T3 g4 q; u; d6 F
(警察进行调查盘问,以便侦破谋杀案。)
/ |0 R( j% T- o4 i% C  a% i(注:solve 和 resolve 都有「解决」的意思,但通常solve用在「问题上」,resolve 用在「争执」上。solve the problem 而 resolve the conflict)& Z3 S) T8 Q2 j" t
The reporter went on a fishing expedition about the president's involvement in the Iraq War.
  Z6 B  S( j+ |! k, O( [. X3 {7 M" ]3 ](记者搜罗有关总统卷入伊拉克战争的新闻资料。)
8 @4 e$ L. Y8 k6 z( O偶尔也有人用复数:/ r) w1 J5 N7 Q, G
Several fishing expeditions have been made before he decides to run for office.. t' V& v8 h) i7 V; N- A+ z5 K2 l5 I
(在他决定竞选之前,他做了数次的收集资料调查。)- C; f: g0 K6 l
(4) filthy rich:
' ^6 E- N& n4 t# E意思是很富有,很有钱。(very wealthy)  F* `: Q4 D  `# t. O
(未必是不义之财或肮脏钱)/ k" a5 t, h" G6 k3 [
多半当形容词用。例如:  h# B8 f9 ^! N# v  u- R
With a beautiful mansion and an expensive car, Mr. B must be filthy rich.
' o$ K+ g9 q6 X+ J( B先生住著富丽堂皇的大厦,开著昂贵的汽车,他一定很有钱。)
. E8 t! b' a2 \" L, U* g' q' S, ZDespite being filthy rich, Mr. C is still leading his life in a frugal way.9 I( f# d3 m$ k
(尽管 C 先生很富有,他仍然过著简朴的生活。)+ K) K/ i/ }( D& @4 \1 [/ p
A filthy rich person tends to have a superiority complex toward others.
# F, X; h# T$ K; [# K(有钱者对他人有优越感的倾向。): l9 c% t; `+ G" M" |* u9 K  \
Filthy rich people are not necessarily well-respected unless they possess noble characters.! V& U, U( d0 R# h9 k
(有钱人未必受人尊敬,除非有高尚的品格。)
; H' y7 O5 {" W: q5 a' h(注:但没有 cleanly rich 的说法)
5 X" W: a& p) `! l7 y# x0 H9 l(5) fairy godmother:: V, O# H7 |2 c6 C: z
指及时慷慨提供帮助的人(someone who unex-pectedly gives generous assistance)8 D9 H/ j4 X0 k6 m4 R9 f. S' H
(多半指有钱的女人)
1 x7 J5 U9 Q$ ]' ^9 @: t(这是来自 fairy tale, 指女人有 magical power;因为童话故事里没有男人,故不说 fairy godfather。当名词用。例如:2 q* z  |* c3 P! ?" v
Mr. A has a fairy godmother who gave him fifty thou-sand dollars.. [, w. g1 I% l3 ]7 \
(一位有钱的女人,帮助A先生五万元。)# }, i% d7 q4 Z+ \- y6 S
After lifelong savings, Mrs. B donated all her money to a charity organization like a fairy godmother.
  b6 W2 Y) p; [6 w* i1 |, a: H- v(B 太太将一生的积蓄全部捐给慈善机构。)" M5 r" u1 ]0 i: \/ R; m2 a
有时也用复数:2 k2 F1 u+ x& V
Only business women can act as fairy godmothers.
" w4 ?2 }( R1 R" |  P' p. d6 r(只有商场上的女人才能提供金钱帮助他人。)
& v4 h: `" V3 c! WIn Chinese society very few fairy godmothers can be discovered." P8 M3 Q; W) m/ {
(在中国社会里,很少有钱的女人慷慨捐助。)" C+ J1 B+ q0 l' s! A. y* R7 x
) a/ _, S2 e7 a" q8 i5 B+ R$ [. u

6)eye opener:
( g% E! `  L( ^9 b指令人瞠目的事物或使人恍然大悟的发现。也就是惊人的新发现或启示(shocking news or revela-tion)
1 K$ f$ J2 f6 y(当名词用;通常只用单数)
, [& n/ |5 s" u" c. e9 o) J例如:: e0 U- S9 p( }4 N! ~* L# ?7 X0 P; L6 F
Your wonderful article on marriage was certainly an eye opener to many youngsters.* K- [  a! g. v
(你那篇有关婚姻的好文章,使许多年轻人获得启示。)( a  L0 J4 [+ x  b9 G
Mr. Wong's speech about U.S./ China policy seemed to be an eye opener.
  Q( @) n, Q9 F' z* D(王先生的中美政策讲演使人恍然大悟。)5 Q% C9 D/ B3 O* E! [' U1 z' x- x
The popular World Journal in North America is an eye opener for many Chinese immigrants.$ `  W& d: M$ D. D$ S( ~
(大名鼎鼎的世界日报是北美许多中国移民惊喜的新发现。)
1 S, v3 q0 C; }' WSome American customs and ways of thinking can be an eye opener to many Chinese people.
  u1 F4 I9 i0 M+ b! W+ c* J(美国一些的风俗习惯和想法,让许多老中感到惊奇。)
/ i( H0 i7 i/ b9 ~: V! s(7) hot dog:
# P( ?6 H- R1 s$ H- ?% Q( h5 Q指喜欢卖弄冒险的举动,或爱出锋头的惊险动作。(one who performs showy or dangerous stunts ; a show off) ( 可当名词或动词用)2 u/ g6 t, K; N4 Y
例如:1 x' G. ]1 k7 Z1 M7 Q# j0 C
Some young people are hot dogs behind the wheel, speeding all the time.& n3 K, Q7 H7 o. X  D
(一些年轻人开车时,常做些超速的惊险动作。)
; N6 T1 n# }% B( m2 L7 ^- l  k(这里的 hot dogs = hot doggers): j, f* A# ~* }! e. M
In front of his girlfriend, the teenager was trying to hot dog.- ~) f4 @0 [" A1 v7 M% B0 \
(在女友面前,年轻人做出一些卖弄技巧的花招。)6 q5 F! W' }/ Z
(动词时态是:hot dogged, hot dogging)
2 M! h9 x( Z9 G7 w) s) Y' MDuring the air force show, one of the pilots was a dan-gerous hot dogging flyer.8 h! B) z, ^  b: L) O
(在空军表演时,一位飞行员做惊险的飞行动作。)1 h+ ~0 w' P$ |' N
也指真正的热狗食物:* P& ~) L9 H+ W
The hot dog is one of the favorite fast food in the U.S.4 m2 r+ \- J# |/ v6 W  z
(在美国热狗是一种受欢迎的快餐。)
" I" t+ F& Q' o, d6 g也可表达欣赏的心情:, O% R0 E. H7 r
Hot dog ! What great news for me., L7 H* S" O2 v4 i1 m* h
(真棒!对我来说是好消息。)# L8 }+ F8 w2 [6 k
(8)eager beaver:/ H) k& l1 t* A0 \, W
指做事非常卖力的人,也许为了给人良好的印象。(one who likes to work harder in order to impress others); f3 @- e! _2 v
(这句话是来自二次世界大战,新兵为了讨好长官而卖力工作。)% ]1 t8 w6 m2 j  |
(当名词用,可指男女)
. `( K& [7 A9 K* v, ]# n- [" f例如:1 A1 B) m$ P/ T5 ]/ }
John seems an eager beaver because he always comes early and leaves late.& r. e% A+ r: q# W# q( f$ b
(John 似乎是十分卖力的人,因为他总是来得早,走得晚。)
( P6 C- h* L( f' i" bBeing an eager beaver, he sometimes is not well-liked by his colleagues.
3 k) ~$ r. ^  W(他做事异常卖力,有时不受同事喜欢。)9 k1 ]9 ~5 H; J3 z, V! L1 f
Does Mr. B have a long-lasting attitude as an eager beaver?* E7 u) X2 |/ H
(B 先生做事非常卖力,那是长久以来的态度吗?)
* i( t+ }$ ]7 U5 y: l$ b6 _You may find some eager beavers in any organizations.
9 f# k1 D; T- A7 y: ~(在任何机关里,你总会发现一些对上司竭力讨好的人。)
+ Y9 B. y# @, o" ?(9)doubting Thomas:
) q3 Z! [, E% g8 ]' b这是指不信任所有的人,几乎是一种怀疑主义者。(one who is always doubtful toward others)
! ^: c& i  ~. {/ z( s$ u(这原出于圣经,因耶稣门徒 Thomas 不信基督的复活)( @6 f( v4 P6 U: L
(当名词用)
; W8 U( i+ d6 [9 s8 q例如:
+ x' t9 m3 ]. mI am not trying to be a doubting Thomas about Mr. Wong's keeping promise.
9 H: ^+ ?  \4 D' U(我不怀疑王先生的承诺。)) w" C2 F# I) z  ^* X7 t7 e+ t
There must have been some unpleasant experiences for Mr. B to become a doubting Thomas.
3 W; ]8 \! A6 }$ v, f) Q8 j(B 先生不信任他人,也许因为有不愉快的经验所致。)% v+ Q& d! B- n$ ?
也可用复数:
7 p% d1 G; \: B# S( l: [2 hMy friends are doubting Thomases toward many Chi-nese business people.& F) v4 r+ Y. ~% e
(我朋友对许多中国商人不信任。)7 ]9 R* L1 c' |+ n2 b# _1 q2 w
If there are too many doubting Thomases in our society, people will lose confidence with one another.
$ w) \2 ?. U" N9 |5 M- D8 i/ C& G(假如社会上有太多的怀疑主义者,那么人与人之间的信心就会丧失。), B7 \0 A, E4 S; W1 X% A
(10)dragon lady:
7 G1 [- n& |1 o, m" x" h( W! W指生气、不友善或凶险的女人。(angry, un-friendly or dangerous woman)(当名词用)
; ?% u/ g8 S( u例如:1 G6 a; L, U& ]
The chairman's secretary is so snoffy and nasty that she is considered a dragon lady.+ ]& A, J# T0 C/ K, g* w& H5 F2 F' f
(主席的秘书,很自大,脾气差,她被视为凶恶的女人。)7 O- ^( K% _, |0 i
I am sure no woman likes to be called a dragon lady.3 g9 z! x' a' |, u' c; {
(我相信没有女人喜欢被称为凶恶的女人。)5 ^' Q; z! u5 F9 s1 M
Should your girlfriend happens to be a dragon lady, are you going to breakup with her?
1 `# p! @. \: |5 q/ f, Q(假如你的女友成了凶恶的女人,你要与她分手吗?)
) P7 U$ K$ b$ n也可用复数:- L# p6 j" D3 U0 A4 e8 U
There may be many dragon ladies in our community.
4 D: k" W% s1 J5 ?+ x(在我们社区里也许有不少凶女人。)
# p! [& d. [3 L5 }注:老外指凶恶男人,不用 dragon gentleman,利用英国侦探小说里的中国恶棍傅满洲(Fu Manchu)为代表
