谈英语俚语

谈英语俚语
- Q, [. s5 K5 m& @! D1 d: Z" z+ k- S0 W1 u* u" Q' `3 Q. I0 P' U! d

) ~( N' r. X& I5 h( K在中文报章杂志上,常看到一些英语俚语(口语)的中文翻译。诸如「黑羊」、「踢水桶」、「阿奇里斯' L) ^6 C$ M! S
之踝」等等。其实这些译文都是来自英语「black sheep」、「kick the bucket」和「Achille's heel」。
) |( l: I7 I- R& I; ^若是这些译文不附加原文予以解释,恐怕「迷惑」的读者,不在少数。这不是影响了语文的沟通目的吗?为此,介绍一些这类的英语俚语(在此称之为「特别字眼」),也许对某些读者会有点助益!7 _+ V3 p8 G; X7 ^
$ d0 ^! l* l1 M
(1) empty suit:
$ x1 L/ |$ L5 ^) w, s% F指不重要的人或假冒者 ( an unimportant person or a phony) 多半用在商业上,当名词用。1 U; U! R% X5 N- {9 f2 k8 g5 @
(这本是business term,指虽然穿著整齐全套的 business suit,却不能干、没有能力,不受尊敬的人。)
1 W# p  {2 H# F1 Z3 o; W6 ?3 L例如:
7 d9 l) [3 l, W  BAn empty suit generally gets no attention from the public.
" A4 c! p+ i7 H(一位虚伪不实的人,通常不会受到大众的注意。)
2 m; `: J( t# c0 I# b+ K" ~3 y9 u/ RMr. Lee acts like a big shot, but he is just an empty suit.: g, p2 W2 a& Y5 j  ~0 E+ G
(李先生装著像位大人物,但他只是不重要的人。)
. X8 B$ h  F3 b2 y" m虽然这句话,多半只用单数,但有时也用复数:# R' a* q9 U- o: q
The company is filled with a lot of empty suits.- a% q: \9 t8 A$ f/ N. e8 h
(这公司有许多虚伪不重要的人)
# o; q) c3 W' V(2) fair-haired boy:3 G: c2 h- S$ i( ?# d' u: T/ [8 B" _
指得宠的人,也就是宠儿,多半指男人(a fa-vorite person usually referring to a man)
) |: J5 ^0 H* J" \  t6 L(通常用单数,当名词用)
* y* J3 ^6 y+ [- O例如:
' j4 l- j- b4 wMr. Cheney has become a fair-haired boy to the presi-dent.
  X& O4 t) C- Z" D( Cheney 先生变成总统的宠儿。)6 D% V5 z1 u$ y: E( k! I
Not being a fair-haired boy, Mr. Wong never gets pay-raises and promotions.
' T% x/ U1 T8 q" T  s( |5 a. H9 R! Q9 z(王先生不得宠,从未得到加薪和升级。)5 c' r+ q7 x% m5 a7 ^
有时也可用复数:
" I7 K# @6 Y* `2 OMr. Bush selected two former fair-haired boys for his cabinet., ^" ]+ \5 d- B5 r/ S
(Bush 先生为他的内阁选用两位过去的宠儿。)
; L. [% L4 x3 Y) e1 k% E2 v$ K0 E& @Fair-haired boys tend to receive special treatment by their bosses.: h: o+ N1 K1 ]3 E
(得宠的人,较会受到他们上司的特别待遇。)
$ h1 n% m5 o, n+ A* W' [(但没有 fair-haired girl 的说法)+ e# `9 @5 N3 s1 Q0 W( D, f% t
(3) fishing expedition:! z; |3 Q, F; {% X4 b$ k
为了搜罗新闻材料而进行盘问或调查(Try to ask questions to get more useful information)
! E) m1 _1 B) T8 K  r4 y(这句话本是 legal term,当名词用,多半用单数)) ]% p. j7 I/ A8 ?" ~7 Z
例如:
: e5 a5 Z$ g  `) SThe judge said the prosecutor was on a fishing expedi-tion and stopped him.
: `- P  U$ F8 Z  Z! s(法官说原告为搜罗罪证而进行调查,要他停止。)6 _' b! D6 H# p' ?
The police are on a fishing expedition in order to solve(或 resolve)the murder case., f. ]' ^0 s' l
(警察进行调查盘问,以便侦破谋杀案。): ~3 s  U) X" R7 {
(注:solve 和 resolve 都有「解决」的意思,但通常solve用在「问题上」,resolve 用在「争执」上。solve the problem 而 resolve the conflict)! |* z5 S# k( Z
The reporter went on a fishing expedition about the president's involvement in the Iraq War.5 H% v& k( S: y. Y5 ~5 A' O
(记者搜罗有关总统卷入伊拉克战争的新闻资料。)( t( P/ D2 \$ i3 |- @- R" R
偶尔也有人用复数:9 P7 k. c" r* _7 P
Several fishing expeditions have been made before he decides to run for office.
( w! b2 r5 a6 w: z(在他决定竞选之前,他做了数次的收集资料调查。)1 s% U  \0 d4 D/ D
(4) filthy rich:
+ ?9 q, q1 Y& L) N意思是很富有,很有钱。(very wealthy)
0 W9 H2 f. U9 z4 p(未必是不义之财或肮脏钱)
& I* P; i7 G1 n! e# w; o% o多半当形容词用。例如:
7 u& u; _0 I8 B8 a) K1 tWith a beautiful mansion and an expensive car, Mr. B must be filthy rich.
- Z7 R* y, @$ F! A( B先生住著富丽堂皇的大厦,开著昂贵的汽车,他一定很有钱。). e8 z5 d: i9 O# ~5 K- a% Y
Despite being filthy rich, Mr. C is still leading his life in a frugal way.6 ^  [9 ~) P& ]% v! I, x  H: B3 z
(尽管 C 先生很富有,他仍然过著简朴的生活。)
5 H, Q' r0 y# bA filthy rich person tends to have a superiority complex toward others.
, B0 F) ]! a  j! y(有钱者对他人有优越感的倾向。)
& r9 k2 E# s1 S  t& Q( VFilthy rich people are not necessarily well-respected unless they possess noble characters.# n. ^. a; S% V% n! f3 x
(有钱人未必受人尊敬,除非有高尚的品格。)" N7 j) [4 Z! d9 g
(注:但没有 cleanly rich 的说法), \4 _3 s. j2 @' {* @
(5) fairy godmother:
8 u# j9 B* {! J% |$ R1 z  L# o/ }指及时慷慨提供帮助的人(someone who unex-pectedly gives generous assistance)& ^1 o$ A( X6 t6 N, M# T/ v
(多半指有钱的女人)( S9 r1 F" J' u$ M8 }9 d  e6 ?8 T
(这是来自 fairy tale, 指女人有 magical power;因为童话故事里没有男人,故不说 fairy godfather。当名词用。例如:
+ g$ r' \0 S3 p4 g$ _3 a. s' XMr. A has a fairy godmother who gave him fifty thou-sand dollars.8 Y+ d9 m0 f: r0 {: e1 A
(一位有钱的女人,帮助A先生五万元。)5 }- M: j9 [) `# X( K2 W
After lifelong savings, Mrs. B donated all her money to a charity organization like a fairy godmother.- p2 y9 j8 C( v) D; z( y4 \
(B 太太将一生的积蓄全部捐给慈善机构。)( ^7 D6 l  N2 T7 T) [# J
有时也用复数:2 @: W. ~9 F& {# T
Only business women can act as fairy godmothers.
% j" k0 A5 h+ B(只有商场上的女人才能提供金钱帮助他人。)9 X1 l% z# i5 y% G1 R
In Chinese society very few fairy godmothers can be discovered.
# |9 G9 ?+ }, f8 x' B(在中国社会里,很少有钱的女人慷慨捐助。)+ L7 K6 \) i  Z- m5 }! U& ]

- x1 a0 b( z5 u: b* o, z" m6)eye opener:7 X- ~/ M0 |2 V
指令人瞠目的事物或使人恍然大悟的发现。也就是惊人的新发现或启示(shocking news or revela-tion)8 h, v1 @% W+ L9 Z; e
(当名词用;通常只用单数): N$ n/ n6 m& R' a2 X6 |( j( s; Z
例如:$ O" M2 R3 W9 Z" b1 T
Your wonderful article on marriage was certainly an eye opener to many youngsters.% @9 e9 h& K& t2 n
(你那篇有关婚姻的好文章,使许多年轻人获得启示。)" W! P" T- _) y: _) _3 z
Mr. Wong's speech about U.S./ China policy seemed to be an eye opener.
6 [6 F: S+ ~% I2 Y(王先生的中美政策讲演使人恍然大悟。)- o& h3 ^4 Z" s  B
The popular World Journal in North America is an eye opener for many Chinese immigrants.
' n( N) w3 w( ?(大名鼎鼎的世界日报是北美许多中国移民惊喜的新发现。)
1 F  [& u& [0 o7 p: }, D# wSome American customs and ways of thinking can be an eye opener to many Chinese people./ {% a4 n# H% q; T7 a
(美国一些的风俗习惯和想法,让许多老中感到惊奇。)
) d& Z" e4 w  Z9 J(7) hot dog:
) B. w3 S. F7 x8 `- r指喜欢卖弄冒险的举动,或爱出锋头的惊险动作。(one who performs showy or dangerous stunts ; a show off) ( 可当名词或动词用)
" ^1 g/ S3 ~: t0 U0 e例如:
0 s4 _- r1 i+ F' bSome young people are hot dogs behind the wheel, speeding all the time.
4 ]1 ~( h+ o7 J1 C& Q( Z) Z(一些年轻人开车时,常做些超速的惊险动作。)  A9 V- k) u1 D" Q: p* H% I( q3 M
(这里的 hot dogs = hot doggers)
4 e& c4 l0 \" L7 M9 s; B. c1 ?In front of his girlfriend, the teenager was trying to hot dog.9 Y* Q% w* U% }
(在女友面前,年轻人做出一些卖弄技巧的花招。)
# A5 a; w7 n. b, C2 e(动词时态是:hot dogged, hot dogging)
) a2 u. p* ^5 GDuring the air force show, one of the pilots was a dan-gerous hot dogging flyer.! R; Y; q1 z3 U  d+ G& Y2 c& s& m
(在空军表演时,一位飞行员做惊险的飞行动作。)  C/ @8 r5 J3 W! e) X
也指真正的热狗食物:
9 D4 R2 v2 f, y2 N" U$ y( }2 AThe hot dog is one of the favorite fast food in the U.S.
) [, l* u; U% K& O3 B9 _- ^(在美国热狗是一种受欢迎的快餐。)) S4 E. `  U$ v* L& I
也可表达欣赏的心情:7 `2 i1 N2 C: J/ R2 r& \% Z
Hot dog ! What great news for me., Q( @4 K& a" l# E, h
(真棒!对我来说是好消息。)
; V7 u. y1 ?& h; |4 P9 c2 |(8)eager beaver:! F: A6 r& b: N. q! z' `9 t
指做事非常卖力的人,也许为了给人良好的印象。(one who likes to work harder in order to impress others). F$ C& {# O- c4 J. k8 s3 k( E* Q; C
(这句话是来自二次世界大战,新兵为了讨好长官而卖力工作。)
) ]0 N- f% ^) }(当名词用,可指男女)7 J" H2 L) t, T6 U0 F
例如:
, z8 ]; ]9 @$ }* w! u/ ?John seems an eager beaver because he always comes early and leaves late.
% p& ^" Q- T1 B- h(John 似乎是十分卖力的人,因为他总是来得早,走得晚。)9 g) ~4 ?* v6 E  @9 F) S
Being an eager beaver, he sometimes is not well-liked by his colleagues.
3 r. R' a# k; ^. Y/ D(他做事异常卖力,有时不受同事喜欢。)( P) m2 @1 T$ g! B- {/ C
Does Mr. B have a long-lasting attitude as an eager beaver?- b, a0 o4 O! t+ ~6 \* R
(B 先生做事非常卖力,那是长久以来的态度吗?)
! v- l" }7 g1 GYou may find some eager beavers in any organizations.
2 |+ ~& J, {, ]* w(在任何机关里,你总会发现一些对上司竭力讨好的人。)8 V6 h: B) {0 p1 k( l4 |" a
(9)doubting Thomas:
+ P) Q& V+ ^0 Y0 l0 o% L" V这是指不信任所有的人,几乎是一种怀疑主义者。(one who is always doubtful toward others)2 h" O- x! T+ b% [0 t9 `
(这原出于圣经,因耶稣门徒 Thomas 不信基督的复活)
- j/ u2 P" P6 k(当名词用)
( a. V8 j* D& q" O) }! e例如:
3 {' R2 w5 {, f0 N& k  ^7 u6 n. ZI am not trying to be a doubting Thomas about Mr. Wong's keeping promise.5 Q) r: \3 P3 L1 D& e+ o  p  \( c
(我不怀疑王先生的承诺。)
+ z# R7 L. I" i6 a0 oThere must have been some unpleasant experiences for Mr. B to become a doubting Thomas.# p# I  j, Y! j( o& `
(B 先生不信任他人,也许因为有不愉快的经验所致。)
) O. ?2 h) W2 ^, q" E2 w! |也可用复数:3 D0 b7 m  U* ~9 c6 x2 s
My friends are doubting Thomases toward many Chi-nese business people.

; Y1 i; r$ K+ Z3 |# T8 IIf there are too many doubting Thomases in our society, people will lose confidence with one another.1 ?- x8 b7 q0 T3 ?) S
(假如社会上有太多的怀疑主义者,那么人与人之间的信心就会丧失。)
: E, ]7 f, K. R( F: |0 d(10)dragon lady:" _! s- w6 A1 w7 W
指生气、不友善或凶险的女人。(angry, un-friendly or dangerous woman)(当名词用)
+ y! F! d6 C( o& w2 R  V例如:3 i) n( Y; a% S. N) V+ @
The chairman's secretary is so snoffy and nasty that she is considered a dragon lady.& w- ]( q6 z' J3 c6 b. f
(主席的秘书,很自大,脾气差,她被视为凶恶的女人。)1 V$ h4 |9 a5 b7 s( m$ q. w# O
I am sure no woman likes to be called a dragon lady.
: {; N4 v0 Q/ {" K8 s. I% ^: Y' r(我相信没有女人喜欢被称为凶恶的女人。)
$ O# }& k/ O1 U7 U1 f, VShould your girlfriend happens to be a dragon lady, are you going to breakup with her?, F/ I* |6 U  H* F% J* @0 X1 f

也可用复数:3 f' l* p  t; v' b9 P4 _
There may be many dragon ladies in our community.. J4 ~: I1 O) w# ^, r3 z
(在我们社区里也许有不少凶女人。)
1 X8 V/ _- j7 S' T! u, G* J- j注:老外指凶恶男人,不用 dragon gentleman,利用英国侦探小说里的中国恶棍傅满洲(Fu Manchu)为代表
