I am Elena Nicoladis, a researcher at the University of Alberta. With graduate student Poliana Barbosa, I
}) w0 N& i# N2 h( w! M: Eam conducting a study titled, “Language, Self-Recognition and Attachment Development: Possible pathways”,: D9 T* G5 Z7 r
concerning babies between 6- and 18- months of age. The purpose of the study is to understand how language and
$ S( f/ N0 l6 Q* @8 o, \* wattachment are related. For example, we want to know if babies that are good at relating to people around them1 p L) S0 j0 R8 D& U: o
will acquire language earlier and faster.

- Z6 a; M8 x! f5 vIn order to find out, we will videotape you and your baby during a free play situation for approximately
' G+ W- A6 x# V% F7 a& A# ^& x30 minutes, at 6, 9, and 12 months of age. We know that babies are unpredictable so if you would like us to stop" A* d# J/ ~; @6 u3 k
videotaping even after we have arrived, we will do so immediately. We can either reschedule for another day or9 F9 S! e6 y% N3 f3 V+ x
simply skip this visit. Every visit, we will ask if we may contact you again for the next visit’s videotaping: you
' H* \9 N! g! t5 O# smay say no at any time. In the video we will look for cues your baby might use in order to learn words. If your
0 }& O$ i* @" [' ~* a6 N3 T& Lbaby starts speaking before 12 months, we will note down the words used.
" @( k1 R5 a* t8 b
3 `! b4 ^9 B n3 m' \At 6, 9 and 12 months, we will also ask you to fill out a brief questionnaire with infants’ common; c* Q! |: @3 L- A
behaviors. You will chose in a scale from 1 to 7 those behaviors that are more descriptive of your baby (7) and
( r3 p$ M1 R1 z! ~' ?' {4 Ethose that a least descriptive (1). This should last about 15 minutes.1 r" Y; D# m: i% A

Starting in the age of 9 months, we you ask you to take note of any word your baby might spontaneously8 C9 R% T% i; s" j! I0 O6 W
produce. And at 9, 12 and 18 months of age, we will ask you to mark from a list of words any words your baby5 G: O+ l [0 Q* C% Y( r7 _7 Y6 H
knows. We will also give you index cards with infants’ common behaviors and ask you to sort them according to6 t0 X8 ^$ J- {# X& q; E
those behaviors that are more like your baby’s own behaviors. It should take around 30 minutes.$ f* g" Q' _ o( L
3 a; @+ p2 J8 q' IFinally, at 12 and 18 months we will measure your son/daughter language through a standard test. In this,* \! U( s" I0 C3 K r
the child will basically point to pictures and nominate objects.

3 S; d' `) t1 f# R' U' {The entire study will take maximum twelve months. You will receive a DVD with all the recordings done
* i; Q. \6 }( t* S# a# ~" o8 w! D' Wover the course of the study. In the future, we would like to visit you and your baby one more time, when he/she5 R1 |1 E& Z/ P7 o
is 24-month old, when we will measure the child’s vocabulary and language development. This last session will
0 J. s) [$ M5 q! ]take about 30 minutes. If we may contact you to see if you are willing to do this follow-up session, please indicate9 ~* E0 w( l& ~4 h' Q
on the next page. If we contact you later on, you may always decide that you no longer wish to participate.
$ b- l' @+ d$ r+ HAs a default, all videos and computer files are only accessible to those involved in the research. The data
2 F/ D9 p+ x& a q h: Iare stored in a room at the University, with access limited to lab personnel. If you are willing to allow us to show8 Z' P- M/ M M, g% `9 w% S I
video clips of you and your baby to scientific audiences, please indicate on the next page. No names will be used; i8 X3 v8 {+ f; i4 A+ C4 K
in the storing or presenting of information, only codes. The data will be kept for a minimum of five years and
! q4 k% A, R; `0 k' x( P3 ddestroyed when no longer in use. The anonymous coded results will be used for research articles, presentations,( u( L1 P- U2 v$ M0 T o
and teaching. Research assistants will comply with the University of Alberta Standards for the Protection of
( w8 m$ s4 p) j# G& U6 ~Human Research. You are also able to end participation at any time up until we publish the results in scientific" U! y# C3 B& _/ n, T4 L
journals without any repercussions. It is worth to noticed that there is no direct benefits or risks to both the child
