1 z- z8 z& t$ U& cI am Elena Nicoladis, a researcher at the University of Alberta. With graduate student Poliana Barbosa, I
& ` O% x0 a7 `: Lam conducting a study titled, “Language, Self-Recognition and Attachment Development: Possible pathways”,
# v% d/ K0 B1 r ~concerning babies between 6- and 18- months of age. The purpose of the study is to understand how language and- F$ H. Y! P$ G! ], C3 ~
attachment are related. For example, we want to know if babies that are good at relating to people around them7 v1 k+ [) j; o& o
will acquire language earlier and faster.

; |. I5 f' J4 E ^In order to find out, we will videotape you and your baby during a free play situation for approximately
# e( w2 a7 F0 X- b8 j" {9 ~30 minutes, at 6, 9, and 12 months of age. We know that babies are unpredictable so if you would like us to stop% h( U/ z" y& {$ K/ h
videotaping even after we have arrived, we will do so immediately. We can either reschedule for another day or
$ A+ i1 P f3 Wsimply skip this visit. Every visit, we will ask if we may contact you again for the next visit’s videotaping: you
9 B; h1 t8 G2 A+ p8 qmay say no at any time. In the video we will look for cues your baby might use in order to learn words. If your0 c9 A" C. ^+ H5 u: m
baby starts speaking before 12 months, we will note down the words used.# g7 _7 s( [ A; C
3 Y3 l9 N, }8 G9 SAt 6, 9 and 12 months, we will also ask you to fill out a brief questionnaire with infants’ common; f+ X) Q' Q8 J" C
behaviors. You will chose in a scale from 1 to 7 those behaviors that are more descriptive of your baby (7) and* D+ z( M6 a: t5 R
those that a least descriptive (1). This should last about 15 minutes.

; l u) O! @( {Starting in the age of 9 months, we you ask you to take note of any word your baby might spontaneously
9 A5 O4 v; Y. ~- a( G' jproduce. And at 9, 12 and 18 months of age, we will ask you to mark from a list of words any words your baby1 n6 e' y: L h6 W
knows. We will also give you index cards with infants’ common behaviors and ask you to sort them according to
7 O( Z; f" [% ]/ s( Nthose behaviors that are more like your baby’s own behaviors. It should take around 30 minutes.
& m \ Y* H+ `7 ~6 R/ r4 x: s* y) Z. ?' w) G7 H9 }
Finally, at 12 and 18 months we will measure your son/daughter language through a standard test. In this,5 _( i8 @- Q* m+ W8 I: \! ^0 d
the child will basically point to pictures and nominate objects.9 D( H8 `1 U+ X! t4 P
; [$ q9 a1 E, g% _The entire study will take maximum twelve months. You will receive a DVD with all the recordings done# A8 G0 c- Y9 B8 v- e
over the course of the study. In the future, we would like to visit you and your baby one more time, when he/she6 [7 m6 q8 K ]
is 24-month old, when we will measure the child’s vocabulary and language development. This last session will7 y6 S6 N& E. Z% u3 S1 Y/ ]( O6 S
take about 30 minutes. If we may contact you to see if you are willing to do this follow-up session, please indicate& p9 K1 ~$ c) N; m( K' o3 Y& M
on the next page. If we contact you later on, you may always decide that you no longer wish to participate.
( ^. r1 k6 P8 T, h2 ^' {As a default, all videos and computer files are only accessible to those involved in the research. The data, K8 C1 {* ^3 Z! ?8 k m
are stored in a room at the University, with access limited to lab personnel. If you are willing to allow us to show
0 S/ H. z0 J" w2 @. }1 Y2 svideo clips of you and your baby to scientific audiences, please indicate on the next page. No names will be used
/ v/ C' O" s& {# h& win the storing or presenting of information, only codes. The data will be kept for a minimum of five years and
\+ o2 J+ f5 }. q/ udestroyed when no longer in use. The anonymous coded results will be used for research articles, presentations,
# f2 s7 p- x7 @6 g+ ~and teaching. Research assistants will comply with the University of Alberta Standards for the Protection of
8 D5 T- N8 B5 Q y2 Q, q. }2 ?$ P1 YHuman Research. You are also able to end participation at any time up until we publish the results in scientific
3 x: ~: u' V, [& G0 ijournals without any repercussions. It is worth to noticed that there is no direct benefits or risks to both the child
