Insurance required

Except as otherwise permitted under this Act, a person shall
' T) \- ^1 @$ ?; p `not do any of the following:
2 `$ G( x$ n; U; S(a) drive a motor vehicle on a highway unless the motor) @' A0 ~; c8 }- F* T# k- P
vehicle is an insured motor vehicle;
& M/ F# Y; `' O7 y(b) have a motor vehicle on a highway unless the motor
6 t' `; s5 a4 `0 o0 f8 i1 jvehicle is an insured motor vehicle;0 j. j& W9 D) u: s* D. d
(c) where a person is the registered owner of a motor vehicle,
7 {% b9 p6 D* Zpermit another person: Z& j+ D7 }/ N/ l
(i) to drive the motor vehicle on a highway, or0 _8 g# f8 z1 R
(ii) to have the motor vehicle on a highway,% E4 @2 c* P" o7 B( F
unless the motor vehicle is an insured motor vehicle;
9 R, ?. H [9 D# F" q(d) give or lend a financial
: `$ x; V; d; N: c$ yresponsibility card or a copy of it1 X: J9 [ y- g7 M& J; V
to a person not entitled to have that financial" H! e7 k1 Q9 S1 h
responsibility card or copy.

If a person drives or has a motor vehicle on a highway4 K3 }7 D2 g. _! V9 p7 y
without the expressed or implied consent of the registered owner of
4 X7 Z; T# r% i; Fthe vehicle, that person is deemed for the purposes of subsection5 k2 Z. p1 p9 s1 W1 P& W3 g6 u! s- c
(1)(a) or (b) to drive or have on a highway a motor vehicle that is
/ o9 s, [5 A: e; Hnot an insured motor vehicle., l9 m" ~- P8 t# t. W

- N8 W7 e9 V8 q, W$ u# G" fIf the registration of a motor vehicle is suspended under this4 W& c- I. u% v7 m$ j
Act, the motor vehicle is still registered for the purposes of this

Subsection (1)(a) and (b) do not apply to a person to whom a. y( T9 q- w$ F0 S
financial responsibility card has been issued pursuant to the. f" x7 t. E1 U, T3 S
Insurance Act
8 z8 P3 Y! l; v& aby an insurer who has issued an owner’s policy
3 S" l9 O9 b* l3 I6 Q, @$ }outside Alberta.7 ^; V. @5 i6 y6 C w$ Y; \
(4)0 F( y5 V* y6 V1 V8 [: b0 p
A person, other than a corporation, who contravenes subsection
2 B8 f+ C! C f+ Q+ v0 {& B$ n(1) or section 52(1)(h) or 167(8) is liable,
' |. ~* O; C! k& f1 k3 C(a) for the first contravention, to a fine of not less than $2500
# _0 r7 g5 q Vand not more than $10 000 and in default of payment to! u2 }9 J- r8 z
imprisonment for a term of not less than 45 days and not
' x+ `! \ \; L5 x3 ]! D/ Fmore than 6 months

Minimum $2500, if you don't pay, you will go to jail for a minimum of 45 days. |
