Insurance required

Except as otherwise permitted under this Act, a person shall
- q3 z: r" |7 N- U- V: ~* snot do any of the following:
! d: C- |' w0 N0 X4 q: d" b(a) drive a motor vehicle on a highway unless the motor! p% u8 N& R: y- E d. j
vehicle is an insured motor vehicle;
' W }' b. y; X' y(b) have a motor vehicle on a highway unless the motor$ z; Q. l8 f) } ~- u
vehicle is an insured motor vehicle;
% E- c, F- R' D6 y; W2 f7 A(c) where a person is the registered owner of a motor vehicle,- j9 r) P9 h# l- Q9 O. Y
permit another person
) V1 H5 d; s* c6 L" }2 ^(i) to drive the motor vehicle on a highway, or6 n9 ?$ y* \$ v! q2 S
(ii) to have the motor vehicle on a highway,
% G0 I5 W5 h+ m4 i Nunless the motor vehicle is an insured motor vehicle;
$ Z P% z) J! E: y7 n: @: P(d) give or lend a financial5 X2 M; }, J3 d3 Q) E& d2 p6 F
responsibility card or a copy of it+ g F0 c( J7 E" Z2 v
to a person not entitled to have that financial& H" ?% t! B8 k; D& q% _. P- a
responsibility card or copy.

# G9 v. P% A: N. e" u5 | X dIf a person drives or has a motor vehicle on a highway- n( K# j' N$ M2 i- N
without the expressed or implied consent of the registered owner of( F" Q) d. x+ G, I" b
the vehicle, that person is deemed for the purposes of subsection
' D* V+ i: g4 K9 u9 h(1)(a) or (b) to drive or have on a highway a motor vehicle that is, j6 B% D( h9 i# @ B0 x; R$ c6 ^8 o
not an insured motor vehicle.* k1 J; M; n$ N, x. ]" m

Act, the motor vehicle is still registered for the purposes of this

financial responsibility card has been issued pursuant to the' a$ _5 k9 H6 Y5 k" g" U2 `
Insurance Act
) g/ `- b4 ~! T& v# |; f+ hby an insurer who has issued an owner’s policy+ ~! X5 d+ H0 ]8 _
outside Alberta.
% i3 F" B8 @8 m(4), X/ y$ T6 A8 q5 E. k2 C. F
A person, other than a corporation, who contravenes subsection" J% T4 a2 R, {, g) S& {8 \ W. I, M
(1) or section 52(1)(h) or 167(8) is liable,
- x4 f1 B0 x3 n(a) for the first contravention, to a fine of not less than $2500! `& b {( {' c% C0 ~
and not more than $10 000 and in default of payment to
* c9 K6 J( m. i7 X9 Z2 {imprisonment for a term of not less than 45 days and not
$ o" p) ?. U0 F4 K. L; omore than 6 months
; M$ ^) M# E" K; `/ b0 r! D8 s8 J, f% T2 `% r! `
Minimum $2500, if you don't pay, you will go to jail for a minimum of 45 days. |
