% [3 ?7 Z. p8 F; O
/ T( a% f) u. E; |# y
1. I couldn't care less. ( U$ j8 N. Q% H( F4 }# }$ }
# k9 x- w* M9 U9 M* O% z* m 这句话的意思是“我不在乎”,“缺乏兴趣”(lack of interest),也就是:I don''t care at all. 或 I don''t give a hoot. 例如: ; P; D3 C3 o- l) ]4 m
@1 G6 O* z/ `2 E8 V+ a) p: T2 h( P 人家如果问: What do you think of the budget-cut?(你对预算削减有何看法?)
1 I9 J K# z$ L6 D# A5 t- e( l& k4 R5 @
你回答: I couldn't care less.(我毫不在乎) & j: O' Q. i, n
* D, a6 V9 H6 F+ W
How do you like Mr. Lee's political point of view?(你喜欢李先生的政见吗?)
2 y, K: l2 [0 h' I ?6 y8 i* X" d9 V
I couldn't care less.(我才不在乎呢!)
& I+ |3 q3 H+ c* ~, [2 J: A
1 X# k0 O1 C G6 M
I couldn't care less about the promotion or pay raise.(我不在乎升级或加薪) 4 f: i* g! I2 C8 k- A9 y# c
- F3 @4 M+ \& Y& L' t% ] O
Yes, you do(care).
! G$ R# ]# k7 s- p% W6 U: n( |) G, D) ]& F
至于 I couldn't care more. 就是“我很在乎”(I care a lot.)或 I care deeply. 同理:
5 Y' s: D' ?& W) \, M
" z1 r: O/ ]) U, Y9 [) N$ X I couldn't agree more.=I totally agree.(我完全同意) 5 q% m. U' P: U4 J
' P! x0 `' K6 C( @ Q
I couldn't please you more.=I did my best to please you.(我尽量使你高兴)
" {7 b' i+ O, g. ]
a: }9 g5 z) C9 A I couldn't be more right.=I am totally right.
; \9 W0 E" L1 i2 h: k) m, `) `9 F+ `
- T" P$ B& Y& ~) y I couldn't be more wrong. 4 h% I! c: h L7 p0 x6 M+ `' |
+ R% T8 Y) g; Y' v- E( o; Q!
' E& `" e& i% ~0 Y. Z) @2 ]* G9 Z+ T: D9 m4 b
I could care less. = I care to some degree.(care 的程度可能减少) * g4 q5 T1 G3 r/ r- j7 O% K9 R
. Y. O! u7 h# S! m4 ]4 q8 z" d V
I could care more.=I care some.(care的程度也许增加)(主词可用任何人称代名词:he, she, you, we, they 等。但只用 could,不用 can。) # H7 E. o9 ]! L" X
7 | B: t5 x0 l
2. No bones about it. 4 _/ U4 j- g b
/ j+ x: R* ?+ o* L0 V* @8 g
意思是:真实的,诚恳的(truly, sincerely or exactly),也就是 to make no bones about it.(bone 要加 s, it 是指 something)例如:
" r, ]' e! r7 ^, _& w* C9 [' e. c& O3 U
His wife is beautiful;no bones about it.(他的太太真是很漂亮) I& K0 I. T2 x
+ |4 j1 }! v1 I Mr. A made no bones about it when he talked about abortion issue.(当 A 先生谈到堕胎问题时,他是诚恳的。) ( J, \9 i5 d8 m% K2 O( s3 N
; U% H) T. W& D! }, J0 i
When I spoke on the topic,he said, "No bones about it."(也就是他同意我的看法) 9 |/ {. o+ c5 o, c+ P; z

! v. @3 Q4 ^9 s: f# N! E( M7 u" k* Y( g% g8 d1 a
3. take it on me!
$ I* ~# G& e8 K4 }. p
4 l" K$ C% Z' J% K" n" g6 M 意思是:“这是我的,请用吧!”“这是免费的”(help yourself to it; it is free),这多半是指吃的东西或一些不贵重的东西。例如: # Q2 I. e9 Z/ t! S4 T3 {
! _+ h2 C7 \( G' A3 e/ G Here are some candies from England; take one on me. (这是来自英国的糖果,尝一个吧!) (one = candy)
1 N/ P, ^# N4 N6 w. C8 @. p
0 s# D1 E! X- A/ E The restaurant owner said to me, "Take the dessert on me."

Please take these pencils on me.(取用一些我的铅笔吧!)
- y( R; P$ o$ P7 @/ `
' f! C5 f& V9 G8 z* m (假如夫妇在一起,也可以说:Take it on us.)
- |* |0 h0 l( U* q, G9 {4 J+ g( u7 ~7 z# r
4. I am from Missouri. : W9 N6 z: [; y4 e+ y
1 @$ H0 k! h1 L
这句话有时后面要加一句:“I need to be shown.”或“You have got to show me.”,意思是 Missouri 州的人很固执 (stubborn),不太信任别人,一定要人家证明一下(prove it to me),所以密苏里州也被称为“The Show Me State”。
2 O% b: s3 M3 F) Q* Q; S% X7 J: x5 V9 E" Y6 A2 f2 U5 a
: ?3 Y% G% r: F( ]2 J He is not easily convinced because he is from Missouri. 7 w. x5 |4 R9 S$ D T( f
( O5 j+ d8 h; [5 h3 S* D Don''t try to fool me; I am from Missouri.(You have got to show me.)
2 I! b: a" d1 K- L, U4 {
& s9 b5 @/ A7 n, K/ ^) ^- G/ g We are all from Missouri; we need to be shown.
) ]) j. Y9 o! q. A3 W/ \) M/ |6 B; j) b
As Mr. Smith is a tough guy; he must be from Missouri. (Smith |
