You never know

One day, when I was a freshman in high school,. a( R' k+ m7 e+ X( z! X% @4 m

4 a7 C" m. p3 Q' a5 @( _I saw a kid from my class was walking home from school.5 @) m6 H8 B4 U0 I6 Z* O" w
2 H2 S8 I& F" T; s. y# G( G
His name was Kyle.
' S1 |8 C) R3 J  @% i: P5 F6 j% s
6 f! ~+ z( }) u3 W0 O7 }6 n$ oIt looked like he was carrying all of his
) d' C7 D- |& sBooks.
  Q' ?+ Q: ?# M. e' @, ?
' t* |' s5 Y7 d, DI thought to myself, "Why would anyone bring home all his books on a Friday?
. y$ @0 G3 Y  _4 S( t7 Q$ y* ~' d
3 W& a) v" R8 Y* v# q# |He must really be a nerd."5 D4 \' B6 p; E6 K' l5 B7 z

6 k" H" u. f! e1 w& x  J+ vI had quite a weekend planned (parties and a football game with my friends tomorrow afternoon), so I shrugged my shoulders and went on.6 y. a3 Y' F7 G) J) {/ E

* f) b; n, ^- n+ a8 pAs I was walking, I saw a bunch of kids running toward him.
& c+ C' R" U! X, k; ~6 O! Y6 Q; F2 |- k1 o: @" h: c" I7 ~4 A
They ran at him, knocking all his books out of his arms and tripping him so he landed in the dirt.
  j+ V6 |. B8 H8 w- i7 E% e2 }- a0 R1 n# ?
His glasses went flying, and I saw them land in the grass about ten feet from him.
- W2 A; |9 V7 }7 K! Z% K% n+ P3 W* O; }) [
He looked up and I saw this terrible sadness in his eyes- }! C8 K9 P) _9 U( R+ ^

! R" T9 Q& l/ @; L" RMy heart went out to him. So, I jogged over to him and as he crawled around looking for his glasses, and I saw a tear in his eye.+ J; ~1 Q/ F$ `) g# Y
8 h8 T) W. `2 e! t: k4 M
As I handed him his glasses, I said, "Those guys are jerks.
0 }- C- Z+ r, T- a7 j' {  J
2 f5 a7 {. M' x3 D: MThey really should get lives.+ M; Q5 S) ~/ A+ _; V- V1 w
. m' A/ I+ l) L8 J6 s, [  _- ~
" He looked at me and said, "Hey thanks!"
* G, R! n' f  c. F( ?! g# c3 t% K6 T3 F
There was a big smile on his face.' z6 m% T9 r, ], _4 W. X" i  ~
" x" w2 u# ^) l
It was one of those smiles that showed real gratitude.
! G1 W. ^, c' e# A3 ~2 |' j: t( N: Q( W' X/ x  ?
I helped him pick up his books, and asked him where he lived.
- }! X0 k# }; y4 C0 ?
) g1 t& t! b+ G5 ~; {2 sAs it turned out, he lived near me, so I asked him why I had never seen him before.# e# R/ Z" _8 ]( {. A% p
  l5 B7 k/ ?9 T2 p
He said he had gone to private school before now.
% ?  s; Q) Y* v" G  O4 A5 d- w' i4 l5 j9 j9 e; C1 c. V+ U
I would have never hung out with a private school kid before.+ A2 v; d! p/ h9 l6 Z* I
6 a5 X0 @& @  s, w1 P6 ~
We talked all the way home, and I carried some of his books.
  l& w. }4 |4 d- W
3 D3 o; O8 ^1 D  G7 V$ O+ pHe turned out to be a pretty cool kid.# C( F9 T8 k; S) Z* ~
3 c: X5 j2 s$ J8 B; o" n
I asked him if he wanted to play a little football with my friends.  Z6 x1 y) Q* c
5 M% j8 t6 I0 s1 i: m0 }
He said yes.
' p: o. W' Q8 \# M" g! m
1 A  X1 H6 G, j! `) C; O3 a$ vWe hung out all weekend and the more I got to know Kyle, the more I liked him, and my friends thought the same of him.% {5 M$ V1 r; f: n6 U, e0 }& d; Y7 d! W
  K  B  \4 u# x/ x7 L$ s
Monday morning came, and there was Kyle with the huge stack of books again.
. A2 G8 n, _6 [0 U' n7 U, c5 P& |0 k+ `* ^* G5 d
I stopped him and said, "Boy, you are gonna really build some serious muscles with this pile of books everyday!
1 P4 q7 V  `* D$ k& n0 O8 W8 T! t% P
0 v0 H+ _' a$ w5 H' _+ `  W1 E" He just laughed and handed me half the books.
( ^# X' c+ s& H( g) L
6 j- F6 M& p+ i5 j) S1 b5 P. fOver the next four years, Kyle and I became best friends.
7 W! G) h0 g, ~3 x9 E  ^. ]' ]/ Z, I3 _% g
When we were seniors, we began to think- O5 ?' Y! y& U2 A/ S# p/ m# Z
About college.6 e$ {- |/ H# _
) N" m: z4 I2 ?
Kyle decided on Georgetown, and I4 N$ r3 P) E5 o, Q! Q4 y0 d, T4 N
Was going to Duke.& ]) s: v* {$ w9 @. o
2 V8 T$ ^, C% n$ w2 ?  |
I knew that we would always be friends, that the miles would never be a problem.: p4 j7 T5 O, U) M1 b4 T6 n
2 i  S: o- q" @" i: U. m
He was going to be a doctor, and I was going for business on a football scholarship.
, E7 e( K2 L! U) r& q$ a3 P
3 a! F. V; W7 C' e( C: O, AKyle was valedictorian of our class.
$ }, b1 N! ?' n% H2 ^1 d
! J" Q8 j2 [* o* }' m$ U9 nI teased him all the time about being a nerd.
) ]; w' \% L. e& e' @5 D# H# [
$ f! t( _; Y6 U- cHe had to prepare a speech for graduation.
4 k3 `' O! u+ |  X  G2 {! w
1 N  x! G! Q7 ~3 Y+ A  HI was so glad it wasn't me having to get up there and speak
/ {, M/ P" |" D7 _7 }) V
4 D# N' W: i2 G* t- H  LGraduation day, I saw Kyle.2 d  {( T7 n0 J  m0 T" ]
9 A0 G; u3 j6 J* ^
He looked great.# E( Q& ?7 |, s" q
: U$ S1 h9 ]. I3 Q) X
He was one of those guys that really found himself during high school.
" X* H/ M8 C% |6 s& U: ?$ D
9 F* g9 w; w# `+ B+ t3 v+ vHe filled out and actually looked good in glasses.
9 L5 P$ k" W+ k) i1 W# i$ |, w# z" W- ?
He had more dates than I had and all the girls loved him.: m6 n) J& n) k1 J
' H. A. O- a( W* S& r1 U: n
Boy, sometimes I was jealous.
# o) ^. G2 z/ A  J7 J
& l# `) w0 ?% q) v5 ?Today was one of those days.; }5 V' O; a- m& N3 q

' h! X7 i$ H" J" i" B& XI could see that he was nervous about his speech.
# e7 o! L2 b0 m) ?! P9 C/ C0 @# s6 U5 i! V8 M" e& s  c9 W
So, I smacked him on the back and said, "Hey, big guy, you'll be great!"
  |* Z' L7 ]; S6 g2 F" \
4 g) O! E& o7 }, ]& p& i: bHe looked at me with one of those looks (the really grateful one) and smiled.
$ w  T% A, T$ A1 K( D. H; C: |' R( P5 `5 {
"Thanks," he said.
  n( \( r1 ~+ L' B) `4 q0 Y" _1 M; V$ O# r) b6 e6 ?' W' t
As he started his speech, he cleared his throat, and began/ Y5 y' G, n0 s: K

/ Z+ |4 o- L" V0 M0 x"Graduation is a time to thank those who helped you make it through those tough years.
( T" a5 R/ R! g  X6 G# M4 g
1 z, r4 H2 v' Z1 k2 f* g: a4 KYour parents, your teachers, your siblings, maybe a coach...but mostly your friends.../ K9 L  N; ~. w, P" ]2 v

: W: i; O/ Y6 Q! YI am here to tell all of you that being a* x& F, W$ \& O+ U) e4 `" e7 c
Friend to someone is the best gift you can give them.
6 p+ N3 p- |/ T3 {3 k3 Z; c1 |/ u* _  s7 Y- S( m( A3 K
I am going to tell you a story."
  ]  O6 _7 _$ O& W$ W6 q: n4 d+ w) m  _; ?- S& B% g; |
I just looked at my friend with disbelief as he told the story of the first day we met.* Y/ a' Q# l& T/ y
2 M' W& W* i. \
He had planned to kill himself over the weekend.
+ Y* W! o% D; q/ W
  K4 _3 Z7 h8 z1 R0 A8 PHe talked of how he had cleaned out his locker so his Mom wouldn't have to do it later and was carrying his stuff home.. Z! C' ^$ O, i

& o+ T/ a+ `$ I" U! MHe looked hard at me and gave me a little smile.
2 F) S( M- ]3 R1 M; I- }" j+ ~5 n0 w) X- j9 `/ r
"Thankfully, I was saved.2 f8 j! r6 d2 c$ O7 s

, Z' g$ ^" `. ?' aMy friend saved me from doing the unspeakable."( l; `  P2 J3 O( J4 f  T7 z
- r) i" N7 C+ T6 u7 t
I heard the gasp go through the crowd as this handsome, popular boy told us all about his weakest moment.+ }+ v! o& P) k( r

6 U: s. A: N. V5 W, yI saw his Mom and dad looking at me and smiling that same grateful smile.( W$ j& x& T& n/ {  X" @

& @, S2 h5 u( b- K+ mNot until that moment did I realize it's depth.3 T# s; o/ V/ P+ h- g
) \- V' v+ ?  p/ m  U/ Z
Never underestimate the power of your actions.* Z7 q) @) C2 u
5 B8 k2 R1 A9 X
With one small gesture you can change a person's life.
. K' t2 r# E+ Q7 o! a  N  y9 r: `
3 `% ]7 \+ ~; u1 W/ @* q/ ?For better or for worse.. D1 V- q! M+ Y  r

, W* G* \1 }+ L) h3 G6 jGod puts us all in each other's lives to impact one another in some way.
( f8 c4 y8 f7 h; X: |/ h3 R1 q# w, e7 w3 r1 \" ~; ~' h) n4 c+ V
Look for God in others.
! ~2 c$ W* v2 v2 s+ h/ _
9 o# B3 i' T# J7 k% k0 gYou now have two choices, you can:

4 E, Z& P% U. x! s9 U  L& z1) Pass this on to your friends or2 r( J( @* f1 m* B  a8 D
& q1 u# h; K: D+ V" d9 z
2) Delete it and act like it didn't touch your heart.  T' i! l% K9 P, [7 |( T0 ?9 l! |- q' q

. ?. x# {8 m* H* U# MAs you can see, I took choice number 1.
8 J; b6 L4 t" C% E3 W"Friends are angels who lift us to our feet when our wings have trouble remembering how to fly."

( @6 B" a0 y4 ]6 t' AThere is no beginning or end.. Yesterday is history.' r$ g) \7 J6 y) I/ O
8 m4 `4 L: Y1 ^
Tomorrow is mystery.

Today is a gift.: R+ C1 f9 ~% V. J4 b/ _9 @
