You never know

One day, when I was a freshman in high school,* f. s+ E% o( _" \8 f3 g
0 B1 G) E4 ~% @6 L, ~- F
I saw a kid from my class was walking home from school.
& ]" t# K4 B& k2 |& p
6 Q% _0 K' l6 V# BHis name was Kyle.* C6 f  ^: a+ m# }8 m. Y+ ~

( e- x. T  }& q# m! BIt looked like he was carrying all of his
# G  [/ f8 r: ]6 KBooks.
1 T$ |5 x- X! X9 D
1 c  j/ X; L0 X3 o, d) U: BI thought to myself, "Why would anyone bring home all his books on a Friday?, v+ q7 O- S" F# M
9 H# F: `# j- o7 `3 A* `
He must really be a nerd."* V4 S6 k; d+ q9 C* A

! Q' g  @" i/ B! a- X+ o4 F, DI had quite a weekend planned (parties and a football game with my friends tomorrow afternoon), so I shrugged my shoulders and went on.. |% Q: F; ~: n0 }

$ y( v7 F5 p8 f6 K; {As I was walking, I saw a bunch of kids running toward him.; ^" [( x& ^7 Y$ d* d
! z3 r  N' I9 r7 |
They ran at him, knocking all his books out of his arms and tripping him so he landed in the dirt.9 T( `* C, o- g
# E5 h% E4 `, z" }9 S
His glasses went flying, and I saw them land in the grass about ten feet from him.
8 S: J7 U8 v' f& y, L2 T0 o) T/ L! N$ s0 f
He looked up and I saw this terrible sadness in his eyes
" y9 o" |7 C" x* e* C- v& \1 ~; `
% y# |- o6 v! n5 ^My heart went out to him. So, I jogged over to him and as he crawled around looking for his glasses, and I saw a tear in his eye.6 o! |& i1 E8 I  C
, k3 d! J  x. L
As I handed him his glasses, I said, "Those guys are jerks.
* R/ T5 [( X* T5 Y! X
$ z, Z2 _. u1 E# T" qThey really should get lives.
  D8 y+ x' `( W+ ^4 B7 m
2 z2 |: g: e5 z. Z. B- p+ m( i" He looked at me and said, "Hey thanks!") D3 t* Z# y4 M# D* e4 s

! O& s9 G- y# a# m) JThere was a big smile on his face.
8 j3 ~! h7 z$ ~+ C  J7 f8 C" j
9 a/ W  j  E- c+ T4 C! ~0 fIt was one of those smiles that showed real gratitude.# v- k/ n8 ?! {' t/ K
* i- K8 ?+ x+ b* |  i; p; ^' \/ W
I helped him pick up his books, and asked him where he lived.) w& X# L8 e" ]6 j
% ?& w- @# U5 R0 Q' }
As it turned out, he lived near me, so I asked him why I had never seen him before.
% L# z" U6 E! u+ ?6 y# G& w1 y, Q+ P  P0 ^3 g
He said he had gone to private school before now.& a. v% q1 _5 P+ p3 Z4 u2 [

7 J: ^3 E$ ~7 i* e  \# YI would have never hung out with a private school kid before.
8 I' J/ K" q4 _$ g; C. g- F/ j/ W' K( a3 W8 O" g* k# L  D, x
We talked all the way home, and I carried some of his books.  |/ H& ]7 |8 L" [) `

4 Z& E0 z4 s2 ]5 nHe turned out to be a pretty cool kid.1 G' ^5 K+ r/ ?  p2 h; P. U6 h. ?* S

2 r3 c) G4 R0 R; rI asked him if he wanted to play a little football with my friends.1 `8 s( ]* k6 Q% ], P

% l$ x0 i; i9 Z1 m- pHe said yes.
" B- H; V* l2 n4 S" b( H9 ^4 X; _0 k$ p0 U
We hung out all weekend and the more I got to know Kyle, the more I liked him, and my friends thought the same of him.
5 }9 y- Z) u3 A$ C  L: n- u2 C* {1 _, J7 u9 y7 O( X. D3 r
Monday morning came, and there was Kyle with the huge stack of books again.: M& E4 T9 f! B' m
' T( C, O+ X6 Y; l- x) W
I stopped him and said, "Boy, you are gonna really build some serious muscles with this pile of books everyday!- Y$ d+ w0 M5 H% x7 ]

! v) O& u3 @: a0 u; H& R" He just laughed and handed me half the books.2 ?5 b7 N$ j1 ?

/ z8 ~- k& P* L! p: x( VOver the next four years, Kyle and I became best friends.
. Z, N2 s! z1 t* {% q. v6 H. C" h7 l' q" k
When we were seniors, we began to think
& f, ?' {: D" B6 |About college.
2 y" o7 ?6 W7 r1 |% j# b
4 ^/ _# I3 v! d$ \% KKyle decided on Georgetown, and I- `% S( ^7 N3 s+ W; \" P5 z7 Y4 n
Was going to Duke.: _5 H9 b& u# Z; H6 L+ r

( v% L. A% e, e. G: ^; k& R0 J, m- eI knew that we would always be friends, that the miles would never be a problem.+ n0 I! j, v6 d9 E
1 Q4 F3 A: |0 ]- m4 z( P
He was going to be a doctor, and I was going for business on a football scholarship.
5 Q# y  H: {/ h) h& T2 `& t
) c$ o+ y3 i) |8 L# w6 i6 c8 [Kyle was valedictorian of our class.
, ?5 M1 z" g* q6 l# {* A, H) w" A" ?1 C. v: ^
I teased him all the time about being a nerd.
) B) L( ]( H: Z# Y& V3 y- e, ]( T8 T: H
He had to prepare a speech for graduation.
. s" p! [) T- @0 {7 n
4 b7 N2 @4 n5 _8 K; U- L0 vI was so glad it wasn't me having to get up there and speak
; ^3 _+ M* O9 i7 p. |* A+ \  u1 {
% a- a8 T8 j7 Q6 d3 z5 WGraduation day, I saw Kyle.
( q; U1 g2 s6 ]% o
  y6 g. [# P: Q5 A' }3 n8 tHe looked great.
+ c: o+ U/ j* ]( _+ D/ o1 l1 e( B
; @6 r+ Y- E7 V5 @He was one of those guys that really found himself during high school.  V6 J3 }' j7 y) _0 Z6 u' v; W

8 m7 H! x- P/ A& wHe filled out and actually looked good in glasses.; @" j1 u% w- y: d

2 S4 }, q" v! D$ X) BHe had more dates than I had and all the girls loved him.8 L8 p  J2 y( P- `, p4 v" i

! S7 ]8 ^1 Z7 T. k7 s' QBoy, sometimes I was jealous.
; F2 n- u; a, R* b$ ~. I! G" \
Today was one of those days.
6 c7 P0 Y8 c) U& [& d
8 `) E+ w. S8 M( ^I could see that he was nervous about his speech.* ^9 H8 E% F! A: b) @/ K
3 V' a  y2 j( h2 j2 N
So, I smacked him on the back and said, "Hey, big guy, you'll be great!"( w( s- |- @, o

( R; c' @; F0 ^; k6 S) ?. f9 U' tHe looked at me with one of those looks (the really grateful one) and smiled., w" }6 h, B/ v( H) t% u+ M, \
' N# X' e) |! e1 T7 E3 O6 A7 Q0 x; ]: Y
"Thanks," he said.: R6 s4 z% ]4 c4 r8 j) {1 [: \

/ k' h% p  I( r/ ZAs he started his speech, he cleared his throat, and began& `2 ~- \. f: A" K1 t8 R6 E

0 R& P; N# S3 Q+ b; y) ]6 j: t" m  _"Graduation is a time to thank those who helped you make it through those tough years.
7 o  D0 `+ S/ T8 a& r+ Z3 b1 l4 d3 C2 N9 v& V
Your parents, your teachers, your siblings, maybe a coach...but mostly your friends...+ C" \8 I0 |6 h- ?: d. L" f
" S7 n8 }* M( j& O9 O
I am here to tell all of you that being a
6 V; @! z* q2 k9 F6 i  lFriend to someone is the best gift you can give them.
" h9 t# A6 d' I* J+ R: Z% A
4 N4 W- I2 S8 T5 p) _I am going to tell you a story."% x: E& w% x8 {- h  |/ Q

! s0 Y( O. K* J) M. ?* RI just looked at my friend with disbelief as he told the story of the first day we met." w+ s2 H. W' j( @

' \) i! X: W% @0 }He had planned to kill himself over the weekend.( N  X: l! [3 d( `7 ]
/ |  N) U1 M, S* s* F
He talked of how he had cleaned out his locker so his Mom wouldn't have to do it later and was carrying his stuff home.
$ l# G, G7 o: r& G9 \' @. J! |& ]0 A7 z4 R% P1 J. C. L
He looked hard at me and gave me a little smile.6 g4 r& o( X: g
. m' [) b; f: J' G$ V# I
"Thankfully, I was saved.9 O  O8 Z7 y% Z, L: \' o3 R" ^
, `( W! n0 X5 D* z* d
My friend saved me from doing the unspeakable."8 V. E4 f* y! N" H% L

& l) U" n$ N$ o# |I heard the gasp go through the crowd as this handsome, popular boy told us all about his weakest moment., A% @& a4 e' b2 m/ s6 R# g

* d7 F  U0 S) c4 JI saw his Mom and dad looking at me and smiling that same grateful smile.6 e  _/ R- @3 a8 @9 q, h

2 X+ K/ ^. M% `4 O. r% iNot until that moment did I realize it's depth.
9 ?, C' D& f# B: T; w8 v. `% K; T+ u% w$ u- C, y4 S2 f0 v+ _- |
Never underestimate the power of your actions.9 V( m7 h9 R. @3 W0 J% j
; B5 O  f" N1 p% ?
With one small gesture you can change a person's life.
, E5 v8 Y. H0 S# H2 _" M% i$ V$ a. `
For better or for worse.& i/ l: A' o; S5 f
- s8 S- T$ x( a5 _5 g
God puts us all in each other's lives to impact one another in some way.
; p# b" l) @- p9 l
" m) |+ a, i9 x; }  x: PLook for God in others.( e$ i5 @) C- U8 G8 Z
  w" A8 b: l) f, o& R. O
You now have two choices, you can:
; P6 e+ c+ d* s% T% G
" S! j7 n5 G# p5 `) b+ X$ |1) Pass this on to your friends or
! j( `4 q+ p; ^% B; C$ D$ l5 C$ N% L! Q. R0 h3 x
2) Delete it and act like it didn't touch your heart.
4 A5 N' K9 L5 G: T. l/ Y
" K* I4 [9 Z* z# H. T) |5 F) ]As you can see, I took choice number 1.
( u! ?5 P* X# A9 A3 X"Friends are angels who lift us to our feet when our wings have trouble remembering how to fly."
, K- P* w. m& Y- c# I6 N; y+ c
/ C% o2 q8 ?0 v' G9 }( LThere is no beginning or end.. Yesterday is history.$ I7 y  x- V4 D- M' z4 `0 l

$ L1 e: @) X  X' @5 n& v! t" ZTomorrow is mystery.
. e  p: }; m; _* a' b  x
" J' g) R6 h: d$ d+ H( W$ A3 LToday is a gift.
  P6 }' H2 z" g7 W! p
6 `% i1 n  ?% {! V6 j3 e+ tIt's National Friendship Week. Show your friends how much you care. Send this to everyone you consider a FRIEND.8 n( B* ?& m* ]7 ~; s+ d

1 b! q3 a1 m2 r6 ~4 sTomorrow is mystery.
3 G4 Q* j% D0 w- n# O' S1 |- D! Q8 J* M9 {' I5 F/ b8 q3 P
Today is a gift.
