You never know

One day, when I was a freshman in high school,
/ a0 ?, o% B6 m+ Z! x
2 z% ~7 Q  o! D' |0 e& uI saw a kid from my class was walking home from school.
. a1 R0 K' j5 T) A6 x5 J; g* c0 ^$ o" L
His name was Kyle.
5 n  S" p& {4 w3 {, u9 b) u0 G, ?' @* ]6 t7 u( d7 m$ v& |
It looked like he was carrying all of his
; K3 S6 a! B  |. O5 P( ]Books.) S9 L. g. ?' U& L  S" z

7 F+ E3 P9 B+ Y0 y/ H% Y  w6 NI thought to myself, "Why would anyone bring home all his books on a Friday?
( E6 W4 m4 k  U9 A
# i4 t* \: U' G$ z: U3 Q! DHe must really be a nerd."  i. n8 |) D0 _0 j4 d" `

2 s+ W. M* w9 H4 DI had quite a weekend planned (parties and a football game with my friends tomorrow afternoon), so I shrugged my shoulders and went on.
& N5 |0 A$ S) U+ g4 x
1 w7 X5 J. O1 N$ c# W8 H$ ^As I was walking, I saw a bunch of kids running toward him.
& M! {# c% I9 n. A7 E& f( ^8 D
/ _' }% j7 Q5 i5 t5 p( d5 `They ran at him, knocking all his books out of his arms and tripping him so he landed in the dirt.

8 k/ p" H* I. ?: W. `4 |" xHis glasses went flying, and I saw them land in the grass about ten feet from him.: ~9 c9 ^- z- L, `! c. e
4 [9 E" ~9 x0 @) h7 Z7 B* L
He looked up and I saw this terrible sadness in his eyes6 W8 _( o* @( S( L: I' W) j
' P: q2 l7 y8 r) [& W
My heart went out to him. So, I jogged over to him and as he crawled around looking for his glasses, and I saw a tear in his eye.
# \7 c# ^8 M6 X! Q6 k, l* ^9 P+ @5 |9 X
As I handed him his glasses, I said, "Those guys are jerks.
) P' u9 P7 w, U0 I2 R; d9 S* Q: l) l7 t
They really should get lives., W0 T) d7 k% O9 v) I1 n) J" x
3 q4 k3 |1 U* w8 N8 e7 Q& B
" He looked at me and said, "Hey thanks!"
2 M) B$ V$ A% m2 h5 O! f. K* K- Y4 G4 X# w; ?
There was a big smile on his face.
0 i* L$ k* ?* }# w
' c3 `- G/ c7 _, GIt was one of those smiles that showed real gratitude.

% F5 k" L( V# H8 V  OI helped him pick up his books, and asked him where he lived.- K+ g3 Z5 }0 y
+ \( ]' o1 f" R' y8 p
As it turned out, he lived near me, so I asked him why I had never seen him before.8 @: R$ G& M) P. ]& n4 Z4 H: s! M7 u
, c0 b, G: `. r5 O; E% G
He said he had gone to private school before now.
9 ?& |! M2 Y) ?. K1 C# a) A) {5 j8 A: k+ h  E6 E3 r
I would have never hung out with a private school kid before.0 ^# b  Z! e+ F  G& t  n- S) G
2 b. m! J; Q) e
We talked all the way home, and I carried some of his books.
. q& O$ R/ A% `
6 S' ~7 I2 x% KHe turned out to be a pretty cool kid.9 z' r( [5 ~$ e! U  d; I
! U0 n- f$ s1 G$ X: x
I asked him if he wanted to play a little football with my friends.
4 e; p2 |0 H/ C. ~7 L5 o4 d3 K6 S( @/ s2 n3 ]1 ]  [
He said yes.8 ^- T5 z0 x- h3 |2 E

" @2 x' o  |- E, O; H" k- z- `' rWe hung out all weekend and the more I got to know Kyle, the more I liked him, and my friends thought the same of him." z6 \& I0 X2 _

3 d7 q6 T" k0 k  B# c) {Monday morning came, and there was Kyle with the huge stack of books again.
/ [* U+ V0 `! O! t! M* p4 r; m3 M' X* _# i2 V
I stopped him and said, "Boy, you are gonna really build some serious muscles with this pile of books everyday!
9 k) S8 t) J7 t' a1 V+ _0 D
  h* {) v! P8 P" \" He just laughed and handed me half the books.# N6 y+ B; D' C( g" |$ N
1 Y& ^7 B2 Y- `+ j$ D
Over the next four years, Kyle and I became best friends.2 O$ ?7 z$ M5 r" ^
! U3 J: Q  o; P( s9 j, b
When we were seniors, we began to think
, N3 S& t* G& A4 ^" VAbout college.9 G0 u$ J) i4 b7 i, }; v

7 V5 D# [8 K- ]4 e% hKyle decided on Georgetown, and I3 o: _/ L9 Q+ M3 J& I
Was going to Duke.
8 h" D# u% Z) a( U* ^+ t2 e" c# I6 y+ Q
I knew that we would always be friends, that the miles would never be a problem.( [6 k3 D" D: ]" ?1 h7 l  e
, ?4 w# Z; ]5 _
He was going to be a doctor, and I was going for business on a football scholarship., `% d/ `6 g$ e* D5 ~
6 [8 X  a8 i* i4 B6 C
Kyle was valedictorian of our class./ L( M9 {# e. F

& I6 R) {3 J. fI teased him all the time about being a nerd.
; w# B: D) @  ^$ F7 R: T% E8 o0 ^8 n) C0 h* ]+ j
He had to prepare a speech for graduation.
- X9 L# l9 G2 d" v, ~; J8 X0 S
- p+ t2 |3 a$ \" k, n- a4 gI was so glad it wasn't me having to get up there and speak# j7 P& K7 J  o) U* _( l

$ p8 h5 ~4 n5 `, r% a7 v# iGraduation day, I saw Kyle.- \6 h/ D% ~: |, `( a& E

& m+ I. W6 q$ m8 `4 tHe looked great.2 V( _) a# M; S2 i2 Y5 h/ m% Y& a6 q

& r  v7 a' {1 m* tHe was one of those guys that really found himself during high school.( f# h+ v$ Q" b
) D0 q% Z5 s0 l8 t2 J
He filled out and actually looked good in glasses.! E: n% L" N5 l

+ W% P& k. M  rHe had more dates than I had and all the girls loved him.. O: S# r8 D6 t/ {" J, V: K
& T% _* _2 E2 X/ V
Boy, sometimes I was jealous.
# _0 D/ M  F/ ?- N- ~% U" i/ T) @6 [. l& i- \
Today was one of those days.& Y6 j# ~3 {* F! Z  v. @; `" K
. e  r; P' v5 _6 m" }
I could see that he was nervous about his speech.

7 H. N) ^! I9 Y8 Y" O* HSo, I smacked him on the back and said, "Hey, big guy, you'll be great!"% c2 O1 x0 l9 X

. x5 b. _, m6 S, ?) FHe looked at me with one of those looks (the really grateful one) and smiled.8 N  z1 T* k' X6 n& }; h6 c

( d3 A& q& W" S( Z"Thanks," he said.7 o- k2 w" p# R  `# N6 l$ z* O

2 Z% I. F/ b7 p- v( [. V6 fAs he started his speech, he cleared his throat, and began
+ E) a, F3 A3 ?* L
2 K# `) `+ {: m2 _* `5 v"Graduation is a time to thank those who helped you make it through those tough years.+ Z7 l' Y# E# |6 F9 ^; O

% X8 p8 K" U( H: ^5 s) p! EYour parents, your teachers, your siblings, maybe a coach...but mostly your friends...; |8 e2 o& |+ W, x, Z$ J

& t/ @2 y0 P2 _1 BI am here to tell all of you that being a
% l8 }1 T- ?* \' u) iFriend to someone is the best gift you can give them.
* |5 g+ T4 U& s! G( V/ y( X4 E7 s9 j) ]2 m
I am going to tell you a story."
7 u/ i; E3 e) ]+ t- e' n1 d3 \) @/ J) r5 x
I just looked at my friend with disbelief as he told the story of the first day we met.
9 f! a: Z, Q- W0 E8 j6 G! T' c, X- s
He had planned to kill himself over the weekend.
6 c, s" F/ ^% \" B: d, R7 G1 r
) x2 {' _3 S) S8 yHe talked of how he had cleaned out his locker so his Mom wouldn't have to do it later and was carrying his stuff home.
" E  x$ r1 k, S! A0 R! `' K6 B. R1 k' m2 y3 i1 |* I
He looked hard at me and gave me a little smile.
1 x7 t0 H5 m4 {' t" k4 w  K+ S2 J  ^# P
"Thankfully, I was saved.
) s* S4 N! V6 r# n: Q, @2 d% |1 Y9 r1 ?0 x
My friend saved me from doing the unspeakable."
! u4 P+ y/ W" {* R/ S/ R% x3 e7 R& m2 W  j0 b
I heard the gasp go through the crowd as this handsome, popular boy told us all about his weakest moment.
$ g; i: [( Z$ J/ }% z. v: u2 o1 O( b3 R" H. ?6 ?4 g5 w  [/ ]1 N, \9 J
I saw his Mom and dad looking at me and smiling that same grateful smile.
+ K4 F, Q# @0 x! z5 \' J3 _# M, S: r/ C% P2 n( U- n+ r; I. m% v
Not until that moment did I realize it's depth.' R# P* R. F. L% p
5 _7 X: g5 h+ {$ z) g( w9 j* n) ^
Never underestimate the power of your actions.* d6 s# h1 n2 \4 f

# y9 L& ^( c* x& t6 ZWith one small gesture you can change a person's life.2 S0 S% L# E6 u, L6 F; g9 ?

- B1 S* M; Y4 B8 G) FFor better or for worse.* Q" y& {$ k" m5 o

8 Q1 [9 L. _8 E8 V% z2 R, r# VGod puts us all in each other's lives to impact one another in some way.: p& J  m- ?9 R- L

' s  T: ]7 J, x+ N2 \; Y8 [8 fLook for God in others.
. L9 G( K+ v  p$ Q9 b" c3 e4 a) k5 u7 H
You now have two choices, you can:
7 ~/ d; u, T  d, E1 ]3 n: c! e- u
0 E9 C6 w& t0 u( P( [: x8 x1) Pass this on to your friends or
* U) {$ c: v  }% J6 A) S$ G6 V7 r/ S: V7 e+ Z
2) Delete it and act like it didn't touch your heart.
4 r' q. f. Q  I4 P7 Q! j* \+ ?; t1 s& `0 l4 B9 t0 b
As you can see, I took choice number 1., s  C" n3 r) ]: U- v: D
"Friends are angels who lift us to our feet when our wings have trouble remembering how to fly."* E  b+ I# R* a) g5 [7 o6 n6 N: |
2 g+ n) p( a9 q7 S
There is no beginning or end.. Yesterday is history.* `! F; T" l) D% h( D& x

% K# C/ O0 N! I) W' j/ D  G7 XTomorrow is mystery.7 C: j$ L- c1 X: U! p

6 P% ]2 @* z5 G$ gToday is a gift.
