You never know

One day, when I was a freshman in high school,
) O; R! \2 H6 s4 x8 t& P
8 h' g9 b/ ~  Q4 t% D6 G+ qI saw a kid from my class was walking home from school./ h) M; V% H8 |  y) ]/ _

6 d8 E2 n* E, L" p, v) |His name was Kyle.
! x& v. w0 [1 p1 v, M
5 j. [$ N5 D8 LIt looked like he was carrying all of his5 r. y: t8 h3 r5 _, D, [
Books.6 E- _3 c( D* P9 `( I4 n+ E

3 e3 ?5 ~; @' Y9 t4 g. R: rI thought to myself, "Why would anyone bring home all his books on a Friday?
' ]. {. G+ a1 ]* G/ a$ q4 Z. o
7 K0 m& y! j0 p( `! M: \3 SHe must really be a nerd."
+ H7 _+ R; k  s  {& P3 w5 u3 c/ P4 N' d; H* h: ^3 G! a
I had quite a weekend planned (parties and a football game with my friends tomorrow afternoon), so I shrugged my shoulders and went on.! J! F; r; H5 d$ h( t
, b' l0 b& {4 `/ ~$ ^
As I was walking, I saw a bunch of kids running toward him.4 _0 ?8 b' C( X9 \
' \1 Q/ I" v1 z, K* C; v: {
They ran at him, knocking all his books out of his arms and tripping him so he landed in the dirt.' g' [- ?4 c7 R3 z
6 h; W% F2 y' O' {7 m
His glasses went flying, and I saw them land in the grass about ten feet from him.
/ P. v/ a8 [! ~
1 K( S% _5 I8 O7 jHe looked up and I saw this terrible sadness in his eyes+ i' t$ T1 e5 _
; R1 g$ z% f3 H6 w
My heart went out to him. So, I jogged over to him and as he crawled around looking for his glasses, and I saw a tear in his eye.
1 G4 |( @$ d9 ^# ]( ^
! T; F; ^" Q, l; x* z" H9 KAs I handed him his glasses, I said, "Those guys are jerks., u+ b7 @1 v/ R# |9 K$ L0 Z( S9 a
: G$ q9 P" c( r; R, V
They really should get lives.3 h4 O  ^6 s1 o2 S

! i8 s0 p9 A8 h+ s: @" He looked at me and said, "Hey thanks!"( k; \# h, n! q! c" A# P' d
8 T( S: s( d1 S0 P/ f* A! F
There was a big smile on his face.
2 D# G) ]) r- {* q
& f6 R! A! Q( w+ l6 ~" g$ sIt was one of those smiles that showed real gratitude., d- Q8 a2 A$ B7 _) j4 A: g% e1 M4 d
% Y! z4 w. T" S6 B( A. C
I helped him pick up his books, and asked him where he lived.
0 H$ H8 M) S2 h% c9 }; X
8 K) g4 O! ]+ ^As it turned out, he lived near me, so I asked him why I had never seen him before.1 y1 S! [! z0 p4 j. a( f

+ I' T1 P- Y1 R1 [9 I9 gHe said he had gone to private school before now.
% a+ j3 k  D5 S
) G0 P$ P& ?4 D0 w  c" E' }( xI would have never hung out with a private school kid before.
. }7 N6 u, ]/ E; u8 t% O( A$ r" z
" m* ?0 z; s+ p' d" ~We talked all the way home, and I carried some of his books.! @1 _- r5 W7 V9 M: h1 n
. S2 C' m( [0 O: V- V: [
He turned out to be a pretty cool kid.
2 B9 d, P) o2 t+ R& d
  i  E0 v: }4 r9 pI asked him if he wanted to play a little football with my friends.2 }/ _( ^' {& N
9 A9 f4 l* R# c$ K
He said yes.
" i1 P5 e0 b: W. W  ^& Z( F5 ~
6 {5 E4 H$ `) p% sWe hung out all weekend and the more I got to know Kyle, the more I liked him, and my friends thought the same of him.. I- m3 [9 i, p. P9 x

! W% ~% B; i- s  P6 C) u+ [) @Monday morning came, and there was Kyle with the huge stack of books again.$ c$ ]8 c$ a& z) e5 w
7 p' D4 g2 Q5 n4 G( i
I stopped him and said, "Boy, you are gonna really build some serious muscles with this pile of books everyday!
3 D0 x2 @1 C4 I0 z( j3 L3 }- j# x1 O" a" A$ z9 ~
" He just laughed and handed me half the books." g5 D2 S' X8 j8 j$ M
3 @0 t4 l( L4 f9 F3 Y+ j( y. E
Over the next four years, Kyle and I became best friends.
8 O3 w4 H4 g+ `# g6 {
5 `4 h  x" Z: g6 ZWhen we were seniors, we began to think
( ~' E! A, F, m1 o9 r# K# pAbout college.
  \( x9 I* g5 T2 e- s
- t2 J+ f) X2 L) e0 Z3 \6 [$ UKyle decided on Georgetown, and I6 F' C6 v- n; J3 j9 J$ n. M" {
Was going to Duke.
) `( y) Y1 @6 a! a2 B3 [7 i: e9 w: O. }
I knew that we would always be friends, that the miles would never be a problem.
. K$ o  i2 c0 D9 b, Z6 q+ U3 J
3 Q% \( h( K1 W$ y7 AHe was going to be a doctor, and I was going for business on a football scholarship.
4 O6 `' q* d$ U" g
$ v3 ~" E/ |- W/ RKyle was valedictorian of our class.( ?& a7 B( Q. c% D$ P( c

( O. n+ Q/ s9 q& gI teased him all the time about being a nerd.
- U" r9 Z+ W0 w% C( a
' r1 S( X! y1 K: C$ a  _6 UHe had to prepare a speech for graduation.2 m/ Y# Q: c0 U- n* L: z
: {$ O) ]6 u% }  {1 w
I was so glad it wasn't me having to get up there and speak
" E* g* j6 B6 X  {0 X, w" t, J: D6 P. f/ U$ n
Graduation day, I saw Kyle.2 [9 u; [) H( x0 v2 S

0 @- r- B: S* q' j8 eHe looked great.
+ V; x5 n# y' d5 `6 I) J
$ X2 S' z  R1 X& c$ SHe was one of those guys that really found himself during high school.
& |3 c* h: j) q1 Y3 f  s
7 J3 ~) x% R$ L6 d6 `/ cHe filled out and actually looked good in glasses.
) T6 ?4 G8 h( ~5 c' t$ l, ?: F: O8 G: y. `" l
He had more dates than I had and all the girls loved him.
' K5 ]3 [# R1 R4 H& m6 Y' n
* j) d3 f! {) N8 U' \5 Q3 g# SBoy, sometimes I was jealous.
! N* s3 a8 N; _* J0 O
! k" r; W3 h5 {$ O; r$ TToday was one of those days.
. K* e  d3 Z8 b, F) ^- e7 p( c2 Y2 Y9 Y1 m* s
I could see that he was nervous about his speech.
0 _% N$ v% S4 |' k8 z' d) x* Y* q9 [* r# {
So, I smacked him on the back and said, "Hey, big guy, you'll be great!", |  W  p: C# S) f

( e8 O+ _9 A6 @8 W1 {3 x9 UHe looked at me with one of those looks (the really grateful one) and smiled.3 o! O! L- t  \: }

; h7 ~% N/ P% D. p8 b$ ?& F"Thanks," he said.; P/ ?' l* J, m( @
7 b( ^# U- m6 A& \& p& h
As he started his speech, he cleared his throat, and began/ U* o% z8 F) w4 R# s

  E$ x$ B8 x  i- n"Graduation is a time to thank those who helped you make it through those tough years." s9 I) v7 T$ C; V" Q& [* [
$ S7 A4 x% V/ ^; ]% g
Your parents, your teachers, your siblings, maybe a coach...but mostly your friends...
' j! a8 y. L1 K/ o& ^$ _2 [
( m  N+ S; q5 y6 m% xI am here to tell all of you that being a; u; D; {+ X* }1 F  F7 M
Friend to someone is the best gift you can give them.
' ]' q" K4 P, Z, ^
& x5 [+ y- H4 a0 P$ ]. I1 m% |I am going to tell you a story."
1 M0 B9 e0 p, b+ b" M8 x2 M0 Z& o
7 p: I6 l6 _& G) P' R8 X+ S. P+ _I just looked at my friend with disbelief as he told the story of the first day we met.
$ a4 q& K6 K0 _, d! a) f, I0 H* |# [, B4 y2 u3 i
He had planned to kill himself over the weekend.3 s$ a( V* R. [; y' L
. W6 X% \8 ]1 m! Q
He talked of how he had cleaned out his locker so his Mom wouldn't have to do it later and was carrying his stuff home.! H  g+ M) G3 g0 B% j
# \; ^2 v: M6 L& ]8 L0 E
He looked hard at me and gave me a little smile.
& A' H6 V. |7 l( ?# _7 o8 T( j9 ]3 Y" Q- J' @4 I: b# Y* ]
"Thankfully, I was saved.
1 R. N1 u, Y+ p& f5 i# U% _$ x. Q4 E# u
My friend saved me from doing the unspeakable."
# `$ [' L. A1 k/ X( J
" r/ c$ R0 t' M3 X4 |, B" }! x6 h& }' gI heard the gasp go through the crowd as this handsome, popular boy told us all about his weakest moment.
3 N! h; I* i; T! {$ @1 W
7 y% s- D# ]4 X0 I# vI saw his Mom and dad looking at me and smiling that same grateful smile.' Z  q7 @0 h: U; ]4 F

: P1 Q! K, |% C" i1 e" E% FNot until that moment did I realize it's depth.4 R! `- H0 z. M* a
( U0 M& n% g+ p  K8 k. T8 N- C' z  {
Never underestimate the power of your actions.
7 h1 i5 K6 N3 Q3 ?$ h4 r; }
$ y& g* k) d" XWith one small gesture you can change a person's life.
' V! O' `& h1 _3 L
# D& N+ @3 ^& S( h7 }! ~2 h& F5 @) EFor better or for worse.
2 g# }! D- z# c2 g$ v+ I  C' z# s( [4 `5 b
God puts us all in each other's lives to impact one another in some way.# d) p$ `" K# g- X# m
4 Z, }1 p* ~% ?: ^; t% o2 v
Look for God in others.; ^! s  x7 O) a, @  L; T

; c. d* Y4 ?! Q9 }! bYou now have two choices, you can:

1) Pass this on to your friends or
' X. _" q* t- H) G6 w$ n: v1 s! W$ i5 D1 Z, T$ y& [7 H' ^
2) Delete it and act like it didn't touch your heart.$ }" @$ s0 t  L6 b9 ^

4 r0 M# o3 i) S1 s" WAs you can see, I took choice number 1.( K/ L& e+ n" n
"Friends are angels who lift us to our feet when our wings have trouble remembering how to fly."

: G& a! ]; U/ c' Z5 {. LThere is no beginning or end.. Yesterday is history.5 c0 X5 _/ G5 j5 g  r$ y6 u
