You never know

One day, when I was a freshman in high school,
$ g. H. [: y. H' z# h0 s, E+ l' t' k5 N9 |5 X, x
I saw a kid from my class was walking home from school.1 F/ u; B" ^5 }& Q! f# Q5 z

, g/ F# l. W, e  e+ OHis name was Kyle.
( [4 }, G5 q. K3 `. y) _8 ?, c& b8 r+ `+ O0 N
It looked like he was carrying all of his$ F- Q3 E, _' i& E% K
Books." ^6 R) X! }2 F" R% X. a  Q: c
0 S: y" @+ p2 E
I thought to myself, "Why would anyone bring home all his books on a Friday?
, H, {$ e  e5 M- ]7 E: g4 j( q5 Y  W! b+ j& ?, E
He must really be a nerd."
: Y" r/ v# ]$ J, o0 k' Q) ]
% w/ Q4 b2 m( Y8 V$ w- i, b' jI had quite a weekend planned (parties and a football game with my friends tomorrow afternoon), so I shrugged my shoulders and went on.' [, }# l. t& t7 f

9 Q) s8 K* g3 f- U5 Y! |# HAs I was walking, I saw a bunch of kids running toward him.$ D; [' j# \" \$ @: G4 n
) V* Y) ]; }9 g+ x6 `1 t
They ran at him, knocking all his books out of his arms and tripping him so he landed in the dirt.
9 D/ M0 L; B8 F* E9 D6 @8 W
6 V9 `4 I9 j. d9 p1 q: QHis glasses went flying, and I saw them land in the grass about ten feet from him.

7 `  Q$ `6 m7 N$ [He looked up and I saw this terrible sadness in his eyes
+ X& n! E( Q) G: r
6 S0 Q2 h4 G1 d9 R2 R) C$ T% v' DMy heart went out to him. So, I jogged over to him and as he crawled around looking for his glasses, and I saw a tear in his eye.6 m9 a0 ]( W# |: r4 U) p

- m6 {9 F# u" B4 sAs I handed him his glasses, I said, "Those guys are jerks.
1 u$ a3 q3 j: O" I/ l1 o4 I  ?& r1 F+ u& ]0 A, x2 {8 T/ u
They really should get lives.6 G- ?1 _" t% X0 S5 L5 w
" R" w/ h% R. W, X# F& O$ L
" He looked at me and said, "Hey thanks!"
, x, F, \, V" P! `1 i! J$ {8 ]1 v* B
% n3 h& \4 B! N, V% H$ oThere was a big smile on his face.% |; S0 u( n" c' b8 h

+ h$ y4 g, a- |* b& VIt was one of those smiles that showed real gratitude.% O' v2 G: Z1 s' f# y; E) z4 q

3 h% O) ~  M5 X4 }5 ]3 gI helped him pick up his books, and asked him where he lived., _( I- }* k5 V0 R

5 R# q6 h9 O2 b! L3 t7 r6 e  xAs it turned out, he lived near me, so I asked him why I had never seen him before.
2 d4 \$ x' S5 I) Z2 }1 {+ X
' m8 p. \5 a' r" s5 I0 N' E& @6 uHe said he had gone to private school before now.
9 B3 A* c1 W) ~" {9 X2 G6 K/ K& o7 U( x, n3 ]- H: c
I would have never hung out with a private school kid before.( z2 W# |7 ?8 ^/ t

) V5 y" e2 A  y( u" c& T6 Q8 z1 BWe talked all the way home, and I carried some of his books.
0 x3 g5 z, ~9 r; P( b+ @; d( X
) K! M+ J( h$ }# lHe turned out to be a pretty cool kid.9 K  ^  t1 e+ H9 H
' ?1 C( w$ R5 J- G' r8 C8 G- [
I asked him if he wanted to play a little football with my friends.* D( Z- v) _9 r  A, J5 @% h
7 w, e- G0 w* r: H# Q! k
He said yes.
6 @% V9 }% {& F; g8 m% G: n# c$ a% U1 R& U" d
We hung out all weekend and the more I got to know Kyle, the more I liked him, and my friends thought the same of him.
2 ?8 ~" N+ D: f: H3 u% V' S4 y; ~
; ]4 L4 Y) X3 D0 L1 c9 P/ v8 q* PMonday morning came, and there was Kyle with the huge stack of books again.' p4 ^6 G, C; b6 f

7 L$ j/ d% ?% vI stopped him and said, "Boy, you are gonna really build some serious muscles with this pile of books everyday!
2 c4 K1 @8 ?) {, W& k5 ^7 r  R0 f& o9 T, O! D" `3 \" Q
" He just laughed and handed me half the books.
! N" K/ U0 I" R7 n
4 c- `5 s) L" Z. JOver the next four years, Kyle and I became best friends.
5 G! g* d0 M( X, Y' K: B' ?) V% w
9 l- v2 o0 a% i$ Q9 uWhen we were seniors, we began to think
; F8 v0 @& P$ J6 vAbout college.: c* L% ]* |! A/ D

0 I% d: F* }0 `4 PKyle decided on Georgetown, and I
  H% F' v$ G, `2 J4 |5 r* EWas going to Duke.9 H. a2 ?; P0 E! }

6 a5 {, _* `3 A/ w% oI knew that we would always be friends, that the miles would never be a problem.
/ c0 p) K8 a- `8 R* }% \5 W1 W/ Y( H! L2 J
He was going to be a doctor, and I was going for business on a football scholarship.
6 u; z2 M: ?7 m2 _' C/ W" {4 y3 S2 u
Kyle was valedictorian of our class.; r5 @6 y9 ?: _. I  X$ N2 F* |- M

. B2 t8 p9 z+ ^" c# rI teased him all the time about being a nerd.# u& Y9 {% g: \- y" |

. @6 m* Y. Q6 X" I! B4 {. RHe had to prepare a speech for graduation.. P3 ~8 T. K8 T

' d" i9 ^  k- L( _  R+ N/ b5 q, ~I was so glad it wasn't me having to get up there and speak
+ q* U1 Q8 Y  p- N: Q0 E  p
6 G9 Y& C9 w  u& c' `! j$ U0 QGraduation day, I saw Kyle.7 L. e! i' j8 ^

3 t) Y& V* G# f, y# M/ yHe looked great.9 t6 N9 @' P6 A! `  N
+ O+ @9 g2 ]3 S, B% d
He was one of those guys that really found himself during high school.! q- U8 C) R  X3 m! o  @
5 V/ X5 e& o/ q9 K3 @" q
He filled out and actually looked good in glasses.; X9 ?! Y+ \* W# c4 D! h; t

6 n. Y/ \  w% r0 V' w+ |He had more dates than I had and all the girls loved him.
1 C0 N: C; ~3 a5 v) y4 ]5 ]/ w( q$ [/ b, m- b4 e4 B
Boy, sometimes I was jealous.. a# g( q" N7 V

" n: k1 [: r; |5 y6 M- k9 A0 fToday was one of those days.
( o  G. X; W" ]7 v  p4 H  ]. }/ g/ J1 O6 G: Y0 y+ ~9 g% m
I could see that he was nervous about his speech.
7 h& G8 R7 b' b; s( R
" a# i0 q  ?" P" g1 W1 vSo, I smacked him on the back and said, "Hey, big guy, you'll be great!"
! P. {$ ?% q2 `0 F6 X+ |  R+ a! i- M% X( q  H
He looked at me with one of those looks (the really grateful one) and smiled.
  ~' A% x1 ~' l' e& i
& v3 ^& [5 ~8 h' c( b4 q"Thanks," he said.
2 B1 K+ Q. d  V% P. H  v7 F* @. i
1 @' s* E/ X% G0 u5 {0 v+ N. d1 SAs he started his speech, he cleared his throat, and began% f/ ]& p& u3 e* m6 V/ e) |8 l

+ t7 V3 U9 G2 M, D: f/ e0 Z"Graduation is a time to thank those who helped you make it through those tough years.

1 ?7 u  Y! }# I" G2 R4 RYour parents, your teachers, your siblings, maybe a coach...but mostly your friends...7 t4 F& l9 U* D
7 L% o% ~8 F! g+ t1 T# q. n; L
I am here to tell all of you that being a9 i6 x+ K* ~1 s2 a7 f5 L
Friend to someone is the best gift you can give them.& [# @5 K& P% F6 ?+ b1 j1 P

; e( n! n/ X* {: hI am going to tell you a story."! r+ q/ f5 e% A6 D; l1 ]

I just looked at my friend with disbelief as he told the story of the first day we met.
( l- |. l; j$ j# C* z5 ?. d# y
3 o( h: B* O% K; }. N% o0 QHe had planned to kill himself over the weekend.4 v5 t" m3 P, [% g) z; S; z
' Q- P$ {5 T. Y/ X
He talked of how he had cleaned out his locker so his Mom wouldn't have to do it later and was carrying his stuff home.
" W- \8 v; |( U! x8 \) g; c
3 y+ ?3 q6 }2 @He looked hard at me and gave me a little smile.
% p% L6 Z9 A' i+ K" d+ {
% I: X# h) V/ }"Thankfully, I was saved.
4 G9 g  q! O2 z+ j
% |2 w. S( c  p! t9 iMy friend saved me from doing the unspeakable.") r# b& t; r# D2 q+ n9 B7 O; O7 G

8 D% ^+ p7 W1 E7 q2 m* I1 ZI heard the gasp go through the crowd as this handsome, popular boy told us all about his weakest moment.4 D: z# z/ E% W* Y7 e
. U; s$ X6 K: D3 k- p2 o
I saw his Mom and dad looking at me and smiling that same grateful smile.
; @0 M5 G7 p+ d4 M2 e
& p" Y$ T- g) K. ~Not until that moment did I realize it's depth.5 V0 K9 E# Q9 r2 x5 \! X: _

- u) b( c  M, x; D6 h- o# INever underestimate the power of your actions.3 O7 j) h% [" g7 M; U7 m( H5 O! R

: b  d6 U1 Y3 _- g4 ~7 n# zWith one small gesture you can change a person's life.
/ }" u7 g0 F2 V4 t% H- {
( t2 b5 ?& ]# M0 o8 m8 K0 u& ]For better or for worse.
8 Q& b* n5 T% e7 @# L% ~4 |  \0 W; V/ @+ J& w, o) E
God puts us all in each other's lives to impact one another in some way.0 K; |  J( V9 B- `0 F3 {! K
2 v: Q1 a, m+ o/ ~4 _8 V7 s) a
Look for God in others.
9 t* `) k% A0 B- h2 \  |2 z; e% W3 F  ?; L! ~8 F. T
You now have two choices, you can:; o8 a: N4 |6 k% M4 M. C9 I
, T7 \) I5 Q! t( |5 X8 }
1) Pass this on to your friends or6 a: P0 |( ?$ f! d( `1 ~9 i& ?, w
! G& Q9 F$ l* ^) y4 e% x- F
2) Delete it and act like it didn't touch your heart.( \- J/ {7 W" u+ O. R
+ ]2 H  N* P9 b" g! B) {5 P) C
As you can see, I took choice number 1.
" a2 l5 l/ s" W/ f% K* S0 m"Friends are angels who lift us to our feet when our wings have trouble remembering how to fly."
$ r4 I6 H6 \; ?3 e1 N" X# l9 e1 Y" q* i, P6 v: E- J
There is no beginning or end.. Yesterday is history.) q. `1 w$ O; o" `. v

$ u/ O- |& V& O! T; E2 tTomorrow is mystery.
9 ^& ~. [7 o9 [) E- U" H$ I) o7 |( \4 q7 Y4 M0 b
Today is a gift.
! A& X( I7 D; E& ~9 J: M9 i" n# v6 B! W; o  ?5 G8 o' {
