Position Profile Heavy Duty Mechanics inspect, service, and maintain diesel locomotives in accordance with federal and company regulations.

They are also responsible for other important tasks, including:

, a8 Z. c8 _& bDiagnosing diesel engine malfunctions and making indicated repairs
  H) |, C$ G7 K/ f# a; E- xOperating machinery in a safe and effective manner
& u, [- g, |( p% \Providing daily locomotive maintenance that includes changing oil or repairing, replacing, cleaning and adjusting parts
* E# t! G; }" r4 `+ J# dAssembling and starting engines
. V6 \4 [( H5 \6 IDiagnosing locomotive component malfunctions
Preparing inspection, work and maintenance reports
# T( X& @# y8 K( X& e- a& T- {Performing other functions as assigned


Good eye-hand coordination
Frequently lifting weights up to 50 pounds

Physical work, sometimes outdoors in extreme weather conditions

" l" _, |$ Q- {& U- |Visual acuity and hearing threshold tests are required for this position. Written pre-employment tests to become a Machinist Apprentice are required for this position. Completion of 3-year apprenticeship is required to become a Journeyman Machinist. This position is subject to night, weekend and holiday work hours when needed.
