on the issues that matter. Prime Minister Harper and I have been clear3 ?8 K+ H& V8 q( W0 a1 r
that we cannot support imposing a UBB business model on wholesale Internet
- i2 D0 d6 u$ Y+ i9 h) U+ z6 Xservice providers.

Our government recognizes that the Internet and digital technologies are+ E6 B) x( R$ {
an increasingly important part of everyday life—including driving; S& [; s5 A7 q) g: k
innovation, commerce and social interaction. As the government develops0 o) m3 m5 Y$ @0 M: P ~% a4 Q( G
Canada’s first comprehensive Digital Economy Strategy, we need to look# ^' ~ w* X. Y6 M5 _0 p: P
carefully at how issues like UBB affect the big picture. We will be' a" K1 ?8 W4 i1 J6 T3 u* b
guided by our long-standing policies of encouraging competition and& ]7 @' u/ h9 X* I0 q- M2 `
investment, increasing consumer choice, minimizing regulation and allowing2 X9 l) L- y9 x, p* f
market forces to prevail.

The Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) has
+ Y: y' N! Y- u( ^" fchosen to examine these concerns that the government shares with a large0 |- Y: ^# {" E3 l' y/ ?; h
number of Canadians. Details of the CRTC consultation are available at

When the CRTC reaches a final decision following its consultations, the0 @$ P! g* [% G( n& Y, X4 Z4 M
government will carefully assess the CRTC position to ensure that it is in, D! n3 Z/ y; \, y# ]4 T
line with the best interests of Canadian consumers and encourages5 c. H B3 @8 `! i% ^
competition among internet service providers. I will be recommending that+ S$ Z' U4 x4 ` |$ h7 l( E+ n
any decision counter to these foundational principles be reversed.& X/ e+ @3 j$ ~' n& }( k
