5 j6 o, U$ e# e4 d) m/ NOur government recognizes that the Internet and digital technologies are# J6 @( v1 }2 u. P$ C6 o: g1 R6 l
an increasingly important part of everyday life—including driving X# j: I# F! O, n
innovation, commerce and social interaction. As the government develops6 ]- U: F5 Y' F. ~, S5 u" T
Canada’s first comprehensive Digital Economy Strategy, we need to look
7 d, c2 O S) Wcarefully at how issues like UBB affect the big picture. We will be
6 r1 d" `, ? C& P; |2 tguided by our long-standing policies of encouraging competition and" r- T$ _' g& ~7 ?% b$ ]
investment, increasing consumer choice, minimizing regulation and allowing
% ~ h, W5 a# z& tmarket forces to prevail.
9 l; R" S- S. |' [$ a8 H. w7 b9 W: y* A/ f) J' C
The Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) has+ C* L" I% f3 j$ E. W) y4 m
chosen to examine these concerns that the government shares with a large, B1 K# X, B* r9 F6 }
number of Canadians. Details of the CRTC consultation are available at; ?# L: I( K: O7 x% p V8 _

line with the best interests of Canadian consumers and encourages
/ U& H6 P. n6 ^3 U) R; a4 V( l6 {& }competition among internet service providers. I will be recommending that
6 ]8 l6 b3 F: x3 o) Hany decision counter to these foundational principles be reversed.
