 Beautiful story.... makes you understand that things happen for a reason

$ J; j( J7 q& G t The brand new pastor and his wife, newly assigned 3 C# C& x& x/ k& H) C: X
to their first ministry, to reopen a church
/ M* ]. F9 l$ f' P, Uin suburban Brooklyn , arrived in early October
1 ~3 ~ a. |, Q2 E/ dexcited about their opportunities. When they saw 7 X1 m# x$ A; L6 y& G% F6 K! J
their church, it was very run down and needed
R4 F% l0 h& }1 U7 V! D: @% w0 r1 amuch work. They set a goal to have everything + U* m0 |% W; ^- d
done in time to have their first service
) h- o7 k$ c/ @" J3 ^on Christmas Eve. ! v2 i+ f. A& A7 Y8 V$ {
T hey worked hard, repairing pews, plastering walls,
, {* \5 C# a9 d2 H* }painting, etc, and on December 18 . A" x- ~- d \
were ahead of schedule and just about finished. " E" }& g. T ]. d+ y5 A l& l& z
O n December 19 a terrible tempest - a driving 2 n7 R0 d; o- t( l, U% k
rainstorm hit the area and lasted for two days.
G) i* l+ @' Z7 o" f O n the 21st, the pastor went over to the church.
$ ]% r7 }, t- d2 A0 i VHis heart sank when he saw that the roof had
/ ?2 r+ s# e$ |; K' n Yleaked, causing a large area of plaster about : U8 C3 B! B) i
20 feet by 8 feet to fall off the front wall
" c4 k% |! B/ \% Wof the sanctuary just behind the pulpit,
0 O: j4 A* \8 Qbeginning about head high. % a% V/ A- [2 B9 e7 w% n# z
T he pastor cleaned up the mess on the floor, & ^1 [6 O9 R1 Y% j3 i" U" w
and not knowing what else to do but postpone
4 l# Y3 @' n& G; J; v5 Kthe Christmas Eve service, headed home. % a0 U1 C! W S& V3 X
On the way he noticed that a local business was
9 o0 a) h( `. j) nhaving a flea market type sale for charity, so he
* W* f. ~. U: R) ?4 Cstopped in. One of the items was a beautiful,
+ }1 t' ~8 G$ {# i# e. I7 Whandmade, ivory colored, crocheted tablecloth # G4 c) s* _* ^- E( p0 P4 E. K
with exquisite work, fine colors and a Cross
" ]$ R1 m" j+ q! |, E9 e9 M8 w2 u& Lembroidered right in the center. It was just ; s9 W( M% A+ B
; o2 p8 m7 H! s- k
+ [( D( B8 ~% q9 V; \3 w C! m1 `" ] _
5 f o, ^6 p# Z# g7 P# F6 @
6 h* w( v# d) L h; v* S1 m" W # k0 I3 R8 w A! M; ]
& } S0 f/ u6 v8 |' F
the right size to cover the hole in the front all. He bought it and headed back to the church. 4 E! Z" C% a) ?
B y this time it had started to snow. An older
$ |, M2 w0 C- ]% c& \woman running from the opposite direction was ! D% b; c3 j, l8 v
trying to catch the bus. She missed it. The pastor 8 q. P2 g; `$ \: { g: x+ Z! C
invited her to wait in the warm church for Z* E3 ^, Q4 a$ e: L9 \
the next bus 45 minutes later.
6 u! S: {, u5 E8 [3 y% ~/ e( y; U8 Y- k7 ?4 h$ [( _
She sat in a pew and paid no attention to the pastor
8 a1 ^4 }* V8 a( }while he got a ladder, hangers, etc., to put 2 Y* g2 e3 \* h) U7 \1 M
up the tablecloth as a wall tapestry. The pastor + Y' L, ?& g4 O M
could hardly believe how beautiful it looked and it covered up the entire problem area.
' X% k( v( l& K& z- ]3 MT hen he noticed the woman walking down the center
8 ?. g4 Q4 l7 O5 v8 Uaisle. Her face was like a sheet. "Pastor,"
8 C* D& i1 {$ f4 ~, o0 y' E0 ^ \she asked, "where did you get that tablecloth?" , I/ p* H& n* E3 r' t" j
The pastor explained. The woman asked him to check5 p* w( i# x$ m; H! c
the lower right corner to see if the initials, EBG were crocheted into
, T6 a: m: q$ z1 Dit there. They were. These were the initials of the woman, and she had
, B: ~9 z, P6 I1 S/ p; ]made this tablecloth 35 years before, in Austria . ! T! k% ]5 C( {* C
T he woman could hardly believe it as the pastor 2 W8 W' ^9 k+ k7 ? {
told how he had just gotten "The Tablecloth". The
, [2 V4 |" Q: d' ^woman explained that before the war she and 4 t% o8 H, R6 M9 d2 b @6 e
her husband were well-to-do people in Austria .
. @& K) F9 [ Q1 E9 s$ S6 I' e! p3 `) U: O7 e- h: f: A {4 y
When the Nazis came, she was forced to leave.
& f4 f& {0 P4 ~" { mHer husband was going to follow her the next week.
, _; W( S# I" y. GHe was captured, sent to prison and never saw her 2 h1 P' K B w) S3 @" ]; E( Y/ x
husband or her home again. 2 i9 {. d8 H* e6 P
T he pastor wanted to give her the tablecloth;; i2 h% L/ L0 n
but she made the pastor keep it for the church.
; i" x. ]/ ]& Q" Y. C) E5 | YThe pastor insisted on driving her home. That
K# i; f) O2 P/ |was the least he could do. She lived on the other8 j9 F, l/ ]1 X# i6 Y: \
side of Staten Island and was only in Brooklyn
% w# y, {9 _3 {. o- v8 A" \! Ifor the day for a housecleaning job.
+ n8 `% w: I$ R' fW hat a wonderful service they had on Christmas ( L% @# h& `6 s g& F! n& ~
Eve. The church was almost full. The music and the * {& l7 n2 R1 j6 R5 I4 z
spirit were great. At the end of the service, the
* j9 D& H0 T' Z1 T0 T& d" y+ [4 E% Q/ qpastor and his wife greeted everyone at the door
" Q/ M) ]5 E: Q# n9 band many said that they would return.. 8 b. r x4 @7 ]6 T
One older man, whom the pastor recognized - J3 g$ `, `6 s v8 F w0 J' V( R
from the neighborhood continued to sit in one of the 2 H2 l, L7 } T4 o; ?" n/ l
pews and stare, and the pastor wondered why he ; f+ j7 \3 o: j0 n! ~0 p+ m
wasn't leaving.
& j: F3 m" D$ h* s! o; q7 A) OThe man asked him where he got the tablecloth on # W4 V9 O) @" N/ a! ]/ ~8 d
the front wall because it was identical to one
' v ?/ [+ a8 G0 O8 {2 @that his wife had made years ago when
& d2 `7 s3 v! f8 Q) @they lived in Austria before the war and how ; _/ ^5 \5 K c
could there be two tablecloths so much alike? ( v, h& U# J! y1 P2 ]) `# |
H e told the pastor how the Nazis came, how he , ^; O! a( u8 V2 m
forced his wife to flee for her safety and he was 9 K( @2 @/ F# m7 i$ F
supposed to follow her, but he was arrested and
4 U$ N% V+ F& W4 F9 jput in a prison. He never saw his wife or his home8 r4 ?4 s/ h( a' u6 L8 ~; y
again all the 35 years between. ! Y7 g6 M5 r1 O4 F1 A
T he pastor asked him if he would allow him to
, Y# y) o" ~$ R p# L$ ctake him for a little ride. They drove to Staten ' |( }! K+ J: Y+ B
Island and to the same house where the pastor
9 \1 S& w3 p7 I9 j" Rhad taken the woman three days earlier.
4 c5 x4 T( V2 B" iHe helped the man climb the three flights of0 [% w4 _$ z" r4 `- ]+ W
stairs to the woman's apartment, knocked on
/ o+ E* z. r, ~0 M+ Qthe door and he saw the greatest Christmas
& J! |1 k7 e/ F* S+ j8 f/ ~reunion he could ever imagine.! h/ i2 T- v1 I* E1 x0 X0 d

difficult at best, just remember I'm here 1 V0 k+ L) ]( m$ X
