 Beautiful story.... makes you understand that things happen for a reason# z2 u. C# Z2 M3 R+ W

$ y n- i5 h( J, @ The brand new pastor and his wife, newly assigned
% I( \# b8 v; O ~, |1 V4 c+ g/ Fto their first ministry, to reopen a church 9 B% k; p0 {! Z
in suburban Brooklyn , arrived in early October
4 l* F0 k) e& q$ {# Iexcited about their opportunities. When they saw
9 w+ d$ [( j6 ?; [% Q; |their church, it was very run down and needed
3 P2 {) u( _3 p j6 O( `much work. They set a goal to have everything
4 A8 ?0 b5 X. l4 u: S+ Gdone in time to have their first service
! J) \5 I" `7 g8 ]- c- H" G! B2 Yon Christmas Eve. 4 i! D" e0 Z% v4 l3 E% \4 x
T hey worked hard, repairing pews, plastering walls,/ v7 Z) B# M- t* j, b; C9 B
painting, etc, and on December 18 5 I' R {2 @) D" H# Y" X* g
were ahead of schedule and just about finished.
& }9 r5 c0 ?. q! |6 s/ ?O n December 19 a terrible tempest - a driving ) ]2 @0 q' m; z5 I9 r5 f
rainstorm hit the area and lasted for two days. 2 ~" i3 C+ s/ @* }7 X' k* G& F" m! R
O n the 21st, the pastor went over to the church.
5 ]) M. [" K# k0 v$ vHis heart sank when he saw that the roof had
; c! L: ]1 @6 I; jleaked, causing a large area of plaster about 5 Y2 f6 o% ^, }% {6 p$ L# \% w
20 feet by 8 feet to fall off the front wall 7 C- Q4 v; d. N2 @" P
of the sanctuary just behind the pulpit,
7 q) `) }3 b r/ Jbeginning about head high.
% V1 T) E: ~' ^- ~T he pastor cleaned up the mess on the floor, 3 I m8 j, k t/ i: \0 O! m- E( X
and not knowing what else to do but postpone " j+ B, J8 j/ E/ l
the Christmas Eve service, headed home. 2 x$ k9 {9 z2 W" X4 H/ ] w
On the way he noticed that a local business was $ E7 J1 b! {2 V3 m% D
having a flea market type sale for charity, so he 9 \* c+ R- g& F7 {6 e/ {7 e
stopped in. One of the items was a beautiful, - c2 w7 \2 _ L% b
handmade, ivory colored, crocheted tablecloth # N/ a! z4 S% X( t- R
with exquisite work, fine colors and a Cross
! O" s/ i: ~6 P" |# Z5 l+ I+ d+ Fembroidered right in the center. It was just
! N* y% F# _0 Y5 c$ R8 X" G% ^ * [. J) z. J# v" `0 U$ S* R y
8 @ d9 O& g! g8 P6 P! L $ p/ L! J9 ]) {3 z8 `+ T# t0 r
" ^! G3 X/ n8 V5 W t) w: M A H2 Y8 P0 T3 ?4 z
2 Q0 K$ h( h7 b8 {+ zthe right size to cover the hole in the front all. He bought it and headed back to the church. 0 r; y1 s/ F' I9 B Q% k
B y this time it had started to snow. An older ' F" @& M0 |/ D( K) f$ x, r
woman running from the opposite direction was
% p* r% ^, a5 t/ R- M% Ttrying to catch the bus. She missed it. The pastor % x J! R! m5 q/ W' D
invited her to wait in the warm church for
6 X; A/ i6 Y0 Q/ ?/ |$ kthe next bus 45 minutes later. * x% e0 i$ o, ~7 I
! i6 U2 a% ]. A, k* r3 H0 s; {
She sat in a pew and paid no attention to the pastor ; S6 H5 u# _6 Q R" ^
while he got a ladder, hangers, etc., to put : y, o" p, T: [9 G7 M0 y
up the tablecloth as a wall tapestry. The pastor
( @3 c: X6 q% ?* |1 Ycould hardly believe how beautiful it looked and it covered up the entire problem area. ' {) Y/ |: ?0 C8 s# w! K- l
T hen he noticed the woman walking down the center
0 v' i% `, I8 w. \/ E0 g0 aaisle. Her face was like a sheet. "Pastor,". t0 z" g- z* r
she asked, "where did you get that tablecloth?"
% F9 {1 g1 g) \+ I( _+ k. O3 UThe pastor explained. The woman asked him to check
* W1 L3 F+ \# p* tthe lower right corner to see if the initials, EBG were crocheted into
a( ~. H1 U, [2 eit there. They were. These were the initials of the woman, and she had 9 k3 r# n; Z9 x1 W+ U9 d
made this tablecloth 35 years before, in Austria .
3 ]. I! C* H- fT he woman could hardly believe it as the pastor , q# m7 c9 |1 ^0 r8 ^4 a
told how he had just gotten "The Tablecloth". The
. H, y) w8 m5 {6 J: G5 |woman explained that before the war she and 8 J: q3 P1 T! X1 ~0 g8 H! }! e
her husband were well-to-do people in Austria . 9 l7 D' X/ ?* D" B% L% t
; N0 G# f3 V- }+ A! C! _& w5 `4 V; ]When the Nazis came, she was forced to leave.
* B( G& j/ |, c0 S% W9 R8 PHer husband was going to follow her the next week.
j" @6 @5 \0 X! d! k. vHe was captured, sent to prison and never saw her ) f4 M: ?4 L) d+ h. z0 Z' Z# w/ E
husband or her home again.
7 ]6 W5 e3 Z9 q( P* MT he pastor wanted to give her the tablecloth;1 [6 m+ Z( n8 Z
but she made the pastor keep it for the church.) [9 e' }: E( _, c+ _# c$ ~
The pastor insisted on driving her home. That
3 _% U. a1 V: K% M; h+ fwas the least he could do. She lived on the other3 k1 B" O" e5 n: y2 O
side of Staten Island and was only in Brooklyn : w; i* r- x. i! ]
for the day for a housecleaning job. T6 O0 i! ?2 k
W hat a wonderful service they had on Christmas
3 ]4 y3 Q1 ?) b4 _Eve. The church was almost full. The music and the
, P0 R, a; n3 J! I: ^, c' Hspirit were great. At the end of the service, the / T. Z% ?# @9 ~7 T1 s
pastor and his wife greeted everyone at the door
' Q( j i# @# Gand many said that they would return..

from the neighborhood continued to sit in one of the
' s( W6 |/ F+ j" }pews and stare, and the pastor wondered why he 3 o3 V9 U9 N# D* H# q1 C5 s3 I# g8 S
wasn't leaving.
# B k9 P; N. M( ^1 a, FThe man asked him where he got the tablecloth on 0 {! n; A& K9 X- r4 Q$ P# Y/ B' u
the front wall because it was identical to one . a7 ~2 H* e7 f" v
that his wife had made years ago when 3 |3 W5 ^, v9 c5 T# ]
they lived in Austria before the war and how
4 w4 g5 ~% I; {/ O5 n2 g- xcould there be two tablecloths so much alike?
1 W, P$ m) D2 Y2 HH e told the pastor how the Nazis came, how he
7 ]4 `6 m/ c s. z; iforced his wife to flee for her safety and he was % D5 S8 U6 E1 | l
supposed to follow her, but he was arrested and
$ z& ?: p( ?( I7 C/ R3 Q- oput in a prison. He never saw his wife or his home5 t, d+ L4 c# L$ ^
again all the 35 years between. $ J' T# t, m! K5 n3 D
T he pastor asked him if he would allow him to ( {2 a( t) p$ ~# W
take him for a little ride. They drove to Staten
- j' H$ }" B& |( B0 Q" E2 N4 s4 xIsland and to the same house where the pastor 6 B; A, q7 F+ |+ M3 f. \
had taken the woman three days earlier.
$ P, B0 _! c* I+ }& WHe helped the man climb the three flights of9 p0 l* r) L2 p$ N' {
stairs to the woman's apartment, knocked on% K7 B6 _: g5 O& t( ~& a
the door and he saw the greatest Christmas
; S" v) p7 h! \; {: sreunion he could ever imagine.& @1 b$ G* } l% p" R( Q
