Edmonton's population grows by 30,000; H4 |4 G: n- E4 }) j+ K8 m% e

EDMONTON - More than 30,000 people moved to Edmonton between 2008 and 2009, bringing Edmonton's total population to 782,439, say municipal census numbers released Wednesday morning.

( S4 ~8 R5 S$ b$ D' PThe population increase will lead to roughly another $650,000 for the city in provincial grants for policing and libraries, while other grants such as the provincial Municipal Sustainability Initiative could also be affected.4 ] V8 X1 g7 Z1 L6 _
Mandel said he was surprised by the increase.
4 M! U& _, v# O) @) D"It's a substantial increase, but it's not going to overload our system, so it won't work," said Mandel, noting that much of the population is between the ages of 25-34. That age group does not use as many city services as others, Mandel said. 1 v/ L1 d" C5 [' ~7 D2 N- I
Edmonton grew by about 40,000 people between 2005 and 2008. The city in 2008 decided to conduct an annual census, after conducting the surveys on an ad-hoc basis before that.# d; s( G5 r1 ]' Z ?
This year's census cost $1.7 million to complete. City Manager Al Mauer said the annual census could be reviewed but, over time, conducting population surveys brings more money and important data to the city. |
