Oil sands projects fuel provincial construction boom
8 X- [% Y0 p% rAccording to a March 2005 inventory of Alberta construction projects, oil sands projects are leading the way in the ever-growing Alberta economy.
8 F2 ^- A" f7 R2 i/ F' J) k& rThe inventory of construction projects is compiled monthly by Alberta Economic Development( AED ). The list compiles all developments in the province with a value of at least $2 million that are either recently completed, under construction, or planned to start within the next two years. As of March, 946 projects throughout Alberta fit that category.
, S* Z9 N' z1 r. oOf these projects, oil sands construction accounts for $69.25 billion – the largest component by far. Suncor’s Firebag Phase 2 in – situ project, Millennium Vacuum Unit, and Voyageur projects are listed among the 47 oil sands initiatives. Projects by Syncrude, OPTI Canada Inc./Nexen Inc., EnCana, Canadian Natural Resources Ltd., and others round out list.2 y8 ?& ~. E. N) i s
Other leading sectors sectors are infrastructure projects totaling $10.55 billion, institutional projects at $5.5 billion, and conventional oil and gas at $4.37 billion.4 \. G% D3 N1 l7 Z
