Dear colleague: once a year, the Waste Management Branch hosts the1 q# h! I; J; R2 Y0 E( ~
Master Composter-Recycler Program. Over a 3 weeks course schedule+ g( r" R2 y5 z9 f/ B3 D
(Tues./Thursday evenings and Saturday) volunteers will learn about- |8 Y- o A4 O+ N6 j8 A4 }. n
environmental stewardship in our city, such as: history of waste0 B; {! @+ |5 G5 K0 p0 j0 o
management; home composting; household hazardous waste;
! |/ l9 B# t# cvermin-composting and residential recycling.+ h, B j2 z4 q8 a- i% C% Q% L! W
' H5 z: @) m0 J: Y( u& _: ^This course offers in-class instruction as well as several field trips; I6 {+ B$ G( T* Q
to various City facilities. After finishing the course, graduates
$ O( \0 c8 B, j dcomplete 35 hours of volunteer activity promoting the four R's:
4 ]9 p0 B8 W$ [/ m5 b: }# j& Preduce, reuse, recycle and recover. Graduates become important
' S, u# e* l K( T; B" m( Uresources in their communities as they broaden awareness about the0 [2 v+ [4 y3 L& R% i8 N+ ]& ]
importance of composting and recycling.7 b! F6 Y% A3 v& O) g; M
" c `! [/ F4 d% U- r* g+ a' z" i
Examples of volunteer activities include: help with Reuse Fairs & the, x' n8 Q# O; y9 e; M6 y
Reuse Centre; helping friends/neighbours with composting problems;
K# `6 |; Y0 J0 \8 h0 cpublic education display booths; assisting with programs and
, L+ X2 V1 s7 ~maintenance at the City Compost Education Centres; assisting at
0 h7 h0 G }" K. R5 }" H3 u/ R. wvarious demonstration gardens and general public and school9 r# B$ r/ |$ h G- t
presentations.0 J/ W4 y* {* ^ d: p! U8 v
! X; p7 y* R7 F6 H3 Y7 Y8 WThere are many other opportunities for volunteers to contribute and
6 S$ K8 k6 S7 U2 Cvolunteers are able to choose the opportunities that interest them the2 T' Z" c. X) R
most. Curious about recycling and composting and sharing your' U- K, b" b4 w$ b' P$ R
knowledge with others, then apply to become a Master: B" n6 O$ ]! |" m" p
