There are no changes in the way Albertans register for publicly-funded health care. However, as announced in the 2008 budget, health premiums have been eliminated as of January 1, 2009.

4 ?/ j6 L" s5 t) g: B6 ^; b# L# ^Payment and collection of health care premiums owed prior to January 1, 2009 will continue under these guidelines:

   1. All Albertans are responsible to pay premiums unless they qualify for premium assistance, government-sponsored income support programs, or are senior citizens.
3 u' u, S/ _4 @( t1 O4 v& f) [( O. }, r   2. Employers and benefit administrators who register and pay premiums on behalf of their employees will continue to do so.
, `" [; G6 S1 \6 v: b8 h+ e: [   3. Alberta Health and Wellness will continue to pursue collections from those who fail to pay premiums.
+ Z) U7 I' T' p$ r& x. V" \* m9 n   4. Contributors to Alberta Blue Cross or other supplementary insurance plans that provide prescription drug, dental, and other extended coverage, will still pay those premiums, as they have not been eliminated.
2 x" A' V2 m  c. [! v   5. New Albertans must register for the Alberta Health Care Insurance Plan within three months of their arrival.
