EDMONTON - Prices for new homes in Edmonton fell 5.3 per cent in July compared to the same month last year, marking the biggest year-over-year drop in 23 years, said Statistics Canada today.

$ f* ]0 ~0 E9 f; ^Edmonton's cooling market showed the biggest year-over-year drop of any Canadian city.

"Markets in these cities continue to adjust after experiencing record price increases in the last two and a half years," the federal agency said.

& x4 E1 D5 x$ dEven heated Saskatoon posted a slower annual increase of 13.1 per cent, "further confirmation of a trend of deceleration in this city. Many builders reported increased prices as a result of higher material and labour costs," the agency said.; ?) k0 l3 x2 }& C4 k

The fastest pace was in Regina, which saw a year-over-year price increase of 29.6 per cent, down from its record rise of 34 per cent in April.

1 E" E5 G0 a' @& tAs the market continued to cool in Western Canada, prices for new homes rose nationally at a slower pace in July for the sixth consecutive month.

Prices were up 2.7 per cent in July from a year earlier, down from June's annual pace of 3.5 per cent. On a monthly basis, prices edged up 0.1 per cent between June and July.
