5 S1 R# T3 W3 n5 W4 uEDMONTON - Prices for new homes in Edmonton fell 5.3 per cent in July compared to the same month last year, marking the biggest year-over-year drop in 23 years, said Statistics Canada today.

Edmonton's cooling market showed the biggest year-over-year drop of any Canadian city.

"Markets in these cities continue to adjust after experiencing record price increases in the last two and a half years," the federal agency said.

Even heated Saskatoon posted a slower annual increase of 13.1 per cent, "further confirmation of a trend of deceleration in this city. Many builders reported increased prices as a result of higher material and labour costs," the agency said./ v2 P( Y0 g: z+ k; z' Y, ~9 @$ E# G
' s# J4 ~" M9 Z! Z" nThe fastest pace was in Regina, which saw a year-over-year price increase of 29.6 per cent, down from its record rise of 34 per cent in April.& J$ L1 ~; T: D+ V" S0 ?
) o" O9 l* ^( t ?8 GAs the market continued to cool in Western Canada, prices for new homes rose nationally at a slower pace in July for the sixth consecutive month.9 z( {4 ~% n" @/ a* t8 Q

Prices were up 2.7 per cent in July from a year earlier, down from June's annual pace of 3.5 per cent. On a monthly basis, prices edged up 0.1 per cent between June and July.
