The Edmonton Mennonite Centre for Newcomers requires a fulltime Settlement Practitioner to deliver settlement services for Temporary Foreign Workers in the Edmonton region. This is a term position to March 31, 2010.1 r; b& J5 l( A1 O7 s8 {

The project will focus on the following aspects of newcomers settlement services:4 q- W2 `( o; x( o, R8 d: V+ q
• Marketing and outreach to industry and workers, R; |( G( V- `0 {1 p( B' |' E) u( I
• Outreach delivery of “orientation, information and referral services”7 l% z% F/ p7 F2 A- G
• Centre-based delivery of “orientation, information and referral services”3 U( `& H8 k* e6 x$ v5 ^
• Interpretation and translation services

Position Description:
N: v1 h; n% s" aThe Settlement Practitioner will be a front line practitioner, providing settlement

supportive counselling by telephone, emails and in-person./ X$ b2 N% {+ H: d" I6 {+ \

The Settlement Practitioner will also be required to deliver information and" |! ^& I0 t2 l3 W) I9 m
orientation workshops related to settlement needs of Temporary Foreign workers.
: ^0 S( v8 b* W) F) Z+ oWorkshops and group sessions will be centre-based, employer/industry based and
Q- ^4 Z }- ^0 hcommunity based. Some internal and outreach weekend workshop facilitation is: J: M" G& u, F' U. y" n) O7 n1 Y& R: g
required. The ability to work flexible hours is essential.

This position involves working as part of a team to provide services, create an- L! b6 @6 }- @- _1 R3 B& _& h. O
understanding of temporary foreign worker settlement issues, being innovative and( v! y1 j( O' j: x: H! e- W
implementing solutions for TFW facing a variety of challenges. It also involves
/ [' k1 ~& w- p8 hmaintaining all information and records required by the program guidelines.

• Provide a detailed needs assessment of TFW’s referred from EMCN staff,other service providers, industry employers, as well as self-referrals B: U) j! o: G! U) Q/ u
• Establish and maintain relationships between EMCN, other service providers and industries employing temporary foreign workers and promote settlement services at EMCN
$ D2 A# h0 m2 N6 ?/ R• Maintain close relationships with the Temporary Foreign Worker Advisory Office
; |/ s% f9 |& o1 h% U0 E* `• Provide counselling to help temporary foreign workers adjust to Canadian life,make referrals when appropriate, develop needs assessment and action plans if required
% l( W% y5 i, y5 W• Assist people to fill in application forms, prepare for meetings or appointments relating to settlement or employment
; V7 _* y6 J; k• Take clients to view apartments, open bank accounts, register for healthcare and become familiar with community services' Z; R- D8 P; j! D' }0 f% L* J
• Assess and refer individuals experiencing critical or complex immigration and employment difficulties to appropriate service provider or government agency
+ x5 @% Y8 F' Z9 q8 \. a: p• Facilitate and coordinate delivery of workshops related to settlement of TFW 7 ^8 ~6 W, Q6 Q5 n0 a: I) e
• Promote English language services for TFW and employers
3 _6 i) A R( i% M, V0 N• Arrange interpretation and translation services as required e ?& h. L4 }/ N0 D
• Strengthen and build supports with community groups and volunteers
; \6 s2 S# E$ q4 ~9 T! c2 y• Provide service delivery duties as required Desired skills, education and experience:
$ P# v/ P9 c3 ]• Minimum of 2 years of previous experience as a Settlement Practitioner in an intercultural/multicultural/cross-cultural context
5 Q( K9 r& }9 }• Relevant post-secondary education in social science or human service area4 E6 K- p" J1 ~
• Excellent written and oral communication skills9 l' h* k# I5 z! ^
• Strong commitment to providing quality services to newcomers and to working in an intercultural environment with cultural competence: n- R# G, Z9 [/ P/ P- b2 w
• Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively in a team-based workplace, demonstrating flexibility in organizing work, showing initiative,judgment, resourcefulness, good decision-making/ M5 N. f3 k# _' q: l% @3 i" J
• Proficiency in English is essential, as is fluency in other languages
