CALGARY — Screams filled the air after a 17-year-old teen was killed after being struck in the head with a pickaxe at a house party. * R3 [; W: d$ @8 C- R% @) ^% ~

Neighbours said about 100 teens were at a house in southeast Calgary when the attack happened in a detached garage about 11:50 p.m. Saturday. # b# Q" J' c3 C( v

Lisa Poole, who lives two doors down from where the teen died, rushed outside when she heard a lot of screaming. $ h; W4 k! m2 Z# D

A man who lives next door said he saw a body on the ground in the garage.

“I was standing out back having a cigarette then I heard a kid screaming, ‘They killed him,’ then they all scattered,” said Jeff, who didn’t want to give his last name.

Jeff said two high school-aged girls live at the house with their mother. He said large parties are common at the residence. 6 s' ?& s4 B5 `2 j+ V+ Z& F
/ w# T; V0 a* F$ lFriends identified the dead teen as Matt McKay, 17.

Chris Briggs, who grew up in the same neighbourhood and was friends with McKay, described him as nice guy and avid athlete. 7 V8 |! O' X( t1 @6 w9 b8 g" Z

“He was a pretty good guy,” he said. “He played hockey with my friends, he was huge into hockey.”
