Council met to discuss the tuition proposals. I have both good and bad

p# r& @ l0 T; ]* B1 n& ^, r1 i( UFirst, the good news. The committee decided to grandfather all current # k, V) X! h3 K' ?, d' S& L9 ~+ s. ~
undergraduate international students from the increase to the 3 s' r- c& B- Q: V5 R" r- |
differential fee. This means that next year, all current international
5 S- \9 o9 v1 tstudents will pay the same tuition as this year, plus whatever base
8 U7 @% W$ I* ~1 A% i% H3 ?tuition increase that all students face (the proposal calls for 5.75%). 8 `1 g( r; p v- t$ I
Also, the administration decided to withdraw their motion to increase 2 F7 z" b# F a5 _ ?/ Y U! @7 J
the differential for international graduate students.( }8 Y- z7 p9 m$ O. M. v& u
- H/ z0 L+ h* Q0 e0 \* q, g
Now, the bad news. The motion that the committee approved called for an $ r+ |, N4 z% T/ M% a4 o. a$ k
increase in the international undergraduate differential from 157% to
" B& G' X% z8 M# }3 L7 Z220%. This will mean that all new international undergraduate students * Y& ?/ K. c e. Q! i
will pay $15,353.89 (assuming that the 5.75% increase happens). At J! }) O# I0 }
least, all new students will know what the U of A is charging in ) o. i0 \2 [- R5 a( J% b
tuition before they come and they will not face any large unexpected ( Z1 O6 @% y8 O3 a9 D9 \
increases once they are here.

The Students' Union will continue to oppose both the increase in the u5 Y' Y! t5 l" I0 m% \0 |7 p
