) Z# k* m7 F" ?4 u& vGood news. U of A plan to stop increase tuition for students who are recently in U of A. However, they will increase tuition the current students who will go to U of A next year. Sounds fair. I deeply agree.

Dear International Undergraduate Students,

  U4 n4 ^2 H* U9 C( R: z( c& ]# |Yesterday, the Academic Planning Committee of the General Faculties
Council met to discuss the tuition proposals. I have both good and bad
, r8 J0 e8 O( G8 b: Q7 Pnews to report from that meeting.

First, the good news. The committee decided to grandfather all current
! b) \1 E2 y$ R6 e; Nundergraduate international students from the increase to the
differential fee. This means that next year, all current international
. ?! ^8 d, [9 o% V6 ~4 z/ istudents will pay the same tuition as this year, plus whatever base
4 X( I" i' u$ Z4 Ptuition increase that all students face (the proposal calls for 5.75%).
Also, the administration decided to withdraw their motion to increase
9 G/ l- R+ ?# }6 `# R: Ythe differential for international graduate students.
" V9 v' G! y& q3 c+ @
+ X% B  C0 @/ }" Q2 C" R. hNow, the bad news. The motion that the committee approved called for an
' j' o1 t& e( O# W2 W- r" ?- I) |2 \increase in the international undergraduate differential from 157% to
220%. This will mean that all new international undergraduate students
& g# {% ^& R* D- f; cwill pay $15,353.89 (assuming that the 5.75% increase happens). At
, H3 B% r. Y4 a3 {5 jleast, all new students will know what the U of A is charging in
& ^; x  i; u0 X7 [tuition before they come and they will not face any large unexpected
$ W% D; F. ?# C+ f: L2 T0 @3 h0 nincreases once they are here.

0 m- K2 ^! Q0 UThe Students' Union will continue to oppose both the increase in the
international differential as well as the base tuition increase. I
would like to say thank you to all of the international students that
have sent me emails, come out to consultations, and opposed this
