Good news. U of A plan to stop increase tuition for students who are recently in U of A. However, they will increase tuition the current students who will go to U of A next year. Sounds fair. I deeply agree. ( _0 x! j! G5 f2 ?+ F3 M9 M

Yesterday, the Academic Planning Committee of the General Faculties ( ] P# p! b$ u* v! c
Council met to discuss the tuition proposals. I have both good and bad
5 `# | r+ H, U# [; snews to report from that meeting.
2 U" z2 M# a7 {0 _" M1 ^ C- t3 z4 q( Q2 a* \* z/ g
First, the good news. The committee decided to grandfather all current
" V# P* y1 E6 x5 l+ D/ Eundergraduate international students from the increase to the & S% `1 N+ }9 g$ r$ t' |& }
differential fee. This means that next year, all current international % M) C* Z/ W! g; \( f- h4 V* p
students will pay the same tuition as this year, plus whatever base ( G7 \3 ~0 N9 @; S+ O
tuition increase that all students face (the proposal calls for 5.75%). ; o0 y9 E3 d0 Z& S6 w
Also, the administration decided to withdraw their motion to increase
) T6 d- Q: n4 Y# Mthe differential for international graduate students.
" C0 j( [6 q! l3 }3 n! o# {' P
4 }1 ]" j" c/ f/ V0 N9 o: \Now, the bad news. The motion that the committee approved called for an
; i0 y: F1 l; |+ Iincrease in the international undergraduate differential from 157% to
' @' D7 i* K3 c0 S' _220%. This will mean that all new international undergraduate students
% C" t f/ e8 x2 Y- y8 wwill pay $15,353.89 (assuming that the 5.75% increase happens). At 6 Z, B5 l' _! [; w0 t6 q/ M# P
least, all new students will know what the U of A is charging in ! \# g7 P# E( \% T! N8 G
tuition before they come and they will not face any large unexpected
3 c& B+ ~' T$ |( Qincreases once they are here.. ^+ g- d5 r- l" o- |! N

The Students' Union will continue to oppose both the increase in the 4 F0 v/ T) |, w" C! V
international differential as well as the base tuition increase. I 6 T3 |* z8 M3 D
would like to say thank you to all of the international students that 3 ~; \5 K4 {9 [$ U8 g4 L% h. I! o
have sent me emails, come out to consultations, and opposed this 7 p. D. X0 Q1 D4 Z' d$ t
increase. I couldn't have got the increase grandfathered without your
