' J9 f: g# E* H; }Good news. U of A plan to stop increase tuition for students who are recently in U of A. However, they will increase tuition the current students who will go to U of A next year. Sounds fair. I deeply agree.

Yesterday, the Academic Planning Committee of the General Faculties $ R1 H6 n& X( G# k2 m8 J6 _# I
Council met to discuss the tuition proposals. I have both good and bad
]% }4 y5 v& O3 L& gnews to report from that meeting.! [3 y: D8 l! j; P8 M
( F) L) J* D) B& w& ?. O" h1 ?; q
First, the good news. The committee decided to grandfather all current
L4 O7 U3 t( Q* t1 rundergraduate international students from the increase to the
7 J5 ~, w5 E1 e' A5 Idifferential fee. This means that next year, all current international . I# a# K0 U% |' N# ?: f- u
students will pay the same tuition as this year, plus whatever base
7 w% i* W$ r; z: ?" o. E# p$ w# ]$ mtuition increase that all students face (the proposal calls for 5.75%).
$ p. |/ R2 z$ v3 k+ I D r& M7 nAlso, the administration decided to withdraw their motion to increase
0 `. D5 W4 p4 g- G: Fthe differential for international graduate students.
8 V; c$ R# b9 w D( S3 F" b& v q8 F. l6 k
Now, the bad news. The motion that the committee approved called for an 7 r. L* ~: q# y* r6 u) e; |
increase in the international undergraduate differential from 157% to
. R/ {6 {* I2 \% ~220%. This will mean that all new international undergraduate students ; ^# ^, O! w/ B1 [) y0 W% a- K& K
will pay $15,353.89 (assuming that the 5.75% increase happens). At * G7 J1 Y& h b8 w; O+ k3 t
least, all new students will know what the U of A is charging in 3 z* `7 w: d% {4 K4 Z
tuition before they come and they will not face any large unexpected 3 }5 i( h" {1 f- e0 ]' \
increases once they are here.* h& {) `4 c7 g2 E5 t& r! w
2 L3 _. u. i" `5 i8 xThe Students' Union will continue to oppose both the increase in the : G9 n" h4 q" t. [- B9 L
international differential as well as the base tuition increase. I
. u8 C& E& ?! owould like to say thank you to all of the international students that 9 Q7 u& n( N) B$ I' D _/ R
have sent me emails, come out to consultations, and opposed this 2 c3 f# k/ ]5 C6 [' h7 h4 f
increase. I couldn't have got the increase grandfathered without your ' U8 e$ S& N1 Q+ Z' l0 W* ~
