Good news. U of A plan to stop increase tuition for students who are recently in U of A. However, they will increase tuition the current students who will go to U of A next year. Sounds fair. I deeply agree. 6 [/ v6 B$ j, w/ S" c

Yesterday, the Academic Planning Committee of the General Faculties
, }9 Z4 O9 C6 w- @$ C1 ]! ~Council met to discuss the tuition proposals. I have both good and bad
* l. n7 l4 ]- p. Knews to report from that meeting.# B: z7 Z1 O8 u; y5 T
. Q& p; \7 I! bFirst, the good news. The committee decided to grandfather all current
8 m8 Z7 q, Y8 ]) ^; I x, s7 |undergraduate international students from the increase to the
0 ^0 y8 z% t9 {0 Gdifferential fee. This means that next year, all current international 4 o2 C9 I8 Z0 Y3 N$ C7 h/ H
students will pay the same tuition as this year, plus whatever base % F/ A3 f* M( W3 S' P! c* p9 [$ h, s
tuition increase that all students face (the proposal calls for 5.75%).
5 h5 {! y" t/ J4 R' h# LAlso, the administration decided to withdraw their motion to increase
; }1 i; |, O! U) r+ y! Bthe differential for international graduate students.

# k2 U9 f1 _! V* A! VNow, the bad news. The motion that the committee approved called for an
7 f2 J( u* L7 oincrease in the international undergraduate differential from 157% to / E7 R8 ?' {& V
220%. This will mean that all new international undergraduate students
6 D7 o2 Y& {# x. cwill pay $15,353.89 (assuming that the 5.75% increase happens). At
) j. X" k& z' F# j4 [, pleast, all new students will know what the U of A is charging in
5 C% o: e+ c5 k" ^tuition before they come and they will not face any large unexpected
' @8 \4 S0 M* T! p7 zincreases once they are here. N, ^0 Q. `, _9 g4 c- S' c
! P+ r8 e2 o% M, J3 E. XThe Students' Union will continue to oppose both the increase in the / j: X# O0 S Z
international differential as well as the base tuition increase. I 1 V/ x& p/ ~5 x
would like to say thank you to all of the international students that

increase. I couldn't have got the increase grandfathered without your
