When arrived to Edmonton to start my graduate studies on 2004, me and

increases the tuition fee by few percent every year and international
5 h1 w0 T O9 j2 t) ndifferential fee was increased by almost 20% last year. Add to this,
. X- t, _/ Q. B+ X& U4 jthe fact that the university housing has no more space for newcomers
/ o3 m+ g% s' W4 Qand most of the newly admitted students who applied for housing were
0 S! _- J7 l/ }8 W3 E# z9 u6 Lasked to look for a residence on open market.

+ e( W3 m4 X/ R' @, o/ yWhile the average cost of living for a typical graduate student has
7 U3 y. ?2 z. O8 B% L3 y) j# tincreased by something more than 70% percent we are getting paid
4 Y7 g. Q9 c* K; oexactly for the same amount of money that we were offered in our
6 } L0 Q( F& N) Z0 Padmission letter (18000 CAD + 1500 CAD for international students ) G$ ^( S; z# l; [
=19500CAD. What I get is something around 1000CAD/month!!! after 8 Q7 E7 Z+ y+ }! V0 D% Y3 A" e1 t
tuition fee and taxes). To make the argument easy to understand just ! B z/ l! h8 Z; X7 o0 x3 _: V* [
imagine that a new student gets the same amount of money that I am : O5 P" h; e6 Z6 h; m$ E8 g
getting now and I was getting 3 years ago but he or she (like all of
7 q/ ]: z; w" s! u1 s$ {; f Z; }) sus) has to pay twice as much as I was paying for housing when I was Y- T( A7 [1 R; ^- J3 j
admitted and has to incur at least 70% more in average living costs.

" N5 ]2 u. v5 `$ X0 ?* Ystudents are the main pillars of research work at the university.

+ W0 @0 w7 j& I) s( A* A/ }is to question the adequacy of financial aid for graduate and 6 i+ j. J% L: K& o" N7 w9 \
especially international students. Isn抰 it time for the GSA to take
4 i8 u# n6 W0 l* K ) {# F; R+ B( O4 `
initiative in raising the issue of increasing financial aid for
( n& k) P" B- n% F1 Bgraduate students so that the can afford this increase in costs?( Z7 f0 X8 g1 x4 d, |
