When arrived to Edmonton to start my graduate studies on 2004, me and

600CAD/month plus utilities right now, some thing around 700CAD/month.

Other costs of leaving have also increased and the university 0 @- f. H' _/ y8 a
increases the tuition fee by few percent every year and international / q& _+ @6 J. q* m
differential fee was increased by almost 20% last year. Add to this,
6 E6 g r- D9 vthe fact that the university housing has no more space for newcomers
+ x; w5 z, j! k/ w9 Zand most of the newly admitted students who applied for housing were " b2 ^' ]( J* a% x/ w
asked to look for a residence on open market.

While the average cost of living for a typical graduate student has
/ T7 @; u$ \$ uincreased by something more than 70% percent we are getting paid 4 d, R4 q' d7 j& X
exactly for the same amount of money that we were offered in our * r6 f7 x! C9 A9 I$ F; r
admission letter (18000 CAD + 1500 CAD for international students 6 W/ u, z O2 f: e [# W' \5 e& d
=19500CAD. What I get is something around 1000CAD/month!!! after 1 Q9 s$ W) X* s+ q
tuition fee and taxes). To make the argument easy to understand just
3 s1 l. q% H! Y8 ximagine that a new student gets the same amount of money that I am 9 u% T" t: G' ?( R" {& u0 ^% a
getting now and I was getting 3 years ago but he or she (like all of 7 w* s1 l. N2 i1 Z) e m
us) has to pay twice as much as I was paying for housing when I was
: `( i8 `5 \4 S8 R9 madmitted and has to incur at least 70% more in average living costs.% F" v; `, m9 F6 K" e! h
) G) W4 i9 k& b$ [$ y2 i9 A* b& L9 EAlso have in mind that Alberta is a rich province and University of
* J8 u& z: q: j) ]) C% ?Alberta has a remarkable record in absorbing various money and grants
% t$ v7 Q' j7 F, e5 T6 s" Wfrom different governmental and non governmental sources and graduate
8 c( ?: _7 z8 j5 r+ j4 Q$ A1 _students are the main pillars of research work at the university.

My objective in bringing all abovementioned points in your attention
8 q% Y; Z& p7 R+ V0 }1 q& xis to question the adequacy of financial aid for graduate and
. F$ }2 N5 J: M- y! `+ c$ Hespecially international students. Isn抰 it time for the GSA to take( Z6 H( b) V: B8 M5 k
& m2 W! Z% X3 H0 I9 N6 l1 \initiative in raising the issue of increasing financial aid for
: s' z& L W( `; qgraduate students so that the can afford this increase in costs?
