Edmonton Transit is currently seeking applications for the challenging position of Conventional Transit Operator — for positions starting in Summer 2007. This is a long term posting with the successful applicants being called to fill positions on an ‘as-required’ basis.

FUNCTIONS:  G5 M" v  a; V! H) ~1 q" [5 I
•        Transport passengers to and from destinations on prescribed scheduled routes.5 k$ l. H9 U2 z" u' \. V$ h; h1 t/ c* `
•        Collect proper fare, issue transfers.
2 ]- q" r3 y0 z4 s5 q) c, z•        Respond to customer queries concerning transit information.
! o: W8 g" A7 O1 C% _3 D% \$ h•        Operate a Transit diesel bus and/or trolley coach, on a day, night or split shift under varying weather : }7 V* z  d0 }/ I; M/ ^% _" q
and traffic conditions. / g, @7 P0 X/ m, ^  d
•        Adhere to schedules.) }( S4 |* e$ [6 e( `0 g
•        Obey and follow defensive driving guidelines, local traffic laws and Transit system regulations.

•        Handle diverse and challenging situations.- n( x2 {+ H. d; y: L# J% ^
•        Communicate effectively in a variety of situations.) H* b$ K& [- C5 u5 g

•        Grade eleven (11) or an equivalent educational level is required. Formal training in driving or public relations will be considered an asset.
) `  M( F; C  T8 h. y! u# i4 u•        Proven ability to deal directly with the public, with well-developed customer service skills; the ability
6 w6 k+ l# c- d* l; B% }to be diplomatic and courteous in dealing with the public, from the first passenger to the last passenger 4 O  B2 _" t- i; M- v9 L
of the day.
4 B' K' C/ l7 s: |% S- Q/ t•        Ability to meet the physical requirements of the job (operate bus controls, re-set trolley poles, provide passengers with assistance i.e. strollers, wheelchairs etc.).  U3 j, f- I2 T' }/ z( v3 P
•        Applicant must possess a valid class 5 Alberta Motor Vehicle Operator's license (non-probationary and non-graduated) and must have held a valid operator's license for (3) consecutive years.- K0 W0 J/ G1 d8 i
•        Selected applicants must pass the Alberta Motor Vehicle Operator's class 2 written test, at their own expense, prior to training.
% X% D9 q2 t5 P2 K: [; n+ u•        Applicant must provide a current driver's abstract (obtained within 14 days of the video test date)
* C3 [) D5 H& G1 w, T/ z8 o- F3 x8 tshowing no suspensions and no more than 3 demerits recorded over the previous 2 year period.
8 Q" j+ g  j  k7 J•        Ability to pass a written English comprehension test, a public relations video-test, a driving skill 1 G0 B& R4 P0 a- I' `
video-test, a Functional Abilities Recruitment Evaluation (F.A.R.E.) test, a pre-employment City medical examination and a Police Security clearance (at their own expense, prior to training).
/ S! Y3 B+ {5 E•        Successful completion of the ETS Training Program.
  o6 f( Q& v' z* y0 S) @( z•        Internal ETS applicants must have completed all mandatory in-house training.

HOURS OF WORK:
$ d4 z! N0 x1 w& mVarious hours of shift work (straight or split shift), any time of the day, any 5 days of the week 3 F  \1 A  H& D9 d, ]7 {
1st year:  Guaranteed minimum 67.4 hours bi-weekly3 k; S. y7 p6 l8 S) G* m4 n/ x
Thereafter:  Guaranteed minimum 74 hours biweekly

SALARY RANGE:  401, Salary Grade: 004 ; D! t- ?8 T0 d' G+ T
Training Rate:  $16.56 Hourly
9 C8 a8 E1 C: CPost Training Rate:  $20.36 - $25.45 Hourly$ G3 G( Y; R5 S2 }! C% G: y) M& B' y
The rates quoted are in accordance with a collective agreement between the Union and the City of Edmonton.& v7 _* V1 ~& k) C
