CHIEF RETURNING OFFICER

Remuneration: $6,032.00 contract

/ A, n  D( a& k2 Y! ]2 T% _, iJOB SUMMARY:  The Chief Returning Officer reports to the President of  
! f1 R- \' m2 o" C' f$ Pthe Students' Union and oversees all electoral logistics as per Bylaw  
# n( L0 i5 H2 y7 `4 n; T2000.  The Chief Returning Officer shall be recommended to Students'  ; c* @& X* f: o! u+ f0 ]  m
Council in the manner set out in the Council Administration Committee  
5 B4 `# B' R( C9 r6 L5 VStanding Orders by April 15 and serve from May 1 to April 30 of the  ) H' H; t  n$ T% I# m! D9 m
year following their appointment.' n% {) K# w' B2 A

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

1) To run the elections as per Bylaws 2000
5 O3 ^& ^6 k  q4 U9 r1 B# g' s: |* y/ Y# x  e# E
2) To run referenda/plebiscites as per Bylaw 2000., s9 {5 @& _7 [7 h* j" b" r
6 {; l: R8 w/ ]. n, {& i1 L* e2 h
3) To choose the Deputy Returning Officer(s) and assign their duties.# \3 v: U$ r: S, y2 m/ d1 e

. |+ D* }& e: j5 \5 S3 l9 K4) To organize polls during elections/referenda, including appointing  
& p* D/ x' }9 P+ [/ ?: L# r) }! `adequate poll staff and situating polls at appropriate locations  - z  X& q( J  t5 n! F. e/ f
across campus, and advertising the poll locations.
; z; F( z3 b% Z) e: u. Q0 X- y+ k0 E, X( `
5) To oversee the physical count of the ballots during elections/
$ N4 S# O5 c; U' J3 V& s6 O: v- x! ?referenda.

$ Q! Q- l$ b3 S- k% @! W: W' G6) To report the result of an election/referendum to the appropriate  7 X* d- a! _% ]: ?9 ]. w" r

7) To facilitate classroom speaking arrangements during an election/

) c0 \% q5 m5 S$ t6 |3 o" U7 o To enforce budgetary regulations as stipulated in the Elections

10) To be available to all parties during elections/referenda for a  
; a% P* X6 z3 |minimum of four (4) working hours a day, between Monday to Friday,  
) d3 L7 q. `2 N9 }0 {from the first working day after nominations close until the last day  ; B, K6 `5 c! {- s6 x9 k
of voting.  These hours are to be posted in advance.& ~4 ~) M7 T; \/ i7 K
4 F. |% k4 G2 g+ x$ Q
11) To act as the arbitrator in any dispute which may arise during  
" v; r( J8 `6 u& \0 a/ @$ Y( l  z& B+ ethe course of an election/referendum.) h  M$ U" b0 Y3 M! U

3 M- T5 u! W* l8 F. @7 w8 q# f1 P12) To ensure that a cost effective and accurate ballot counting  
7 i& u9 @5 t' L5 H- s$ g8 \. p5 oprocess is in place.( g1 f5 o  J) m" x6 X

( d' [6 O3 D( Z0 ]13) To submit to Students' Council, prior to April 30, a final report  " N$ i- j& G( j5 z
of activities and recommendations./ k. j9 U% s! Q; p; H* X" y

1 A' i" S4 U% ]+ G8 X0 b1 X, @14) To organize a minimum of one (1) forum to be held during the week  
# A8 d0 R. Z& |1 n3 z) T8 _" J* ~of campaigning.
% C) X! d: o; D+ e3 Q: k7 b4 S8 m: X- j2 s: x
15) Perform other job related duties as required by the Council    k3 H+ |! R! k9 f, E
Administration Committee.9 `3 Z: m, z( Y, a: V: d

QUALIFICATIONS:/ ?  U4 t8 }( K8 R

% k( K, k& ?+ r. y1) Must be an undergrad student registered in at least one (1) course  ) Z& c' H( p7 ~, q4 V7 q
for each of the terms of Winter Session and shall be a full Students'  
1 G) ~8 H. P+ C3 p9 VUnion member." I8 Y" f  v/ C7 d

- O$ M% g2 L2 L. t& e" }2) Must have some experience in student elections.2 j, X' _$ j9 H, s1 `

" o2 a) n8 b( G# X% A! Z; |0 t3) Shall not concurrently hold a position on Students' Council, or  
  ~" }: p/ F  ^' h" t7 w% Dany of its standing boards, committees, or any other paid position  3 G5 z( O( I: K9 B% G9 P7 l
with the Students' Union.

5) Ability to deal effectively with Students' Union and University    ^, r& t& G, t) I, _' v4 n
