Today I was volunteering at a post office. A man in an old jacket with uncombed hair came to the counter. He had a wallet in his hand, and put it on the counter. He told me:
. I+ u0 w$ F( ~! u) M: V! X"I am going to send it back". 6 J' T( g4 G P% N" }" f0 F
I did not understand what he meant by "it", because usually people would send a letter or a parcel back to the sender, and I did not see he had any of those. So I asked him:9 c: ^5 J, {4 c9 S
"I am sorry, what are you sending back?"
& l% }/ ^, b. U# a+ tHe said, "the Wallet, I am sending back the wallet." Then he added: "I am going to pay the postage." ) o; T+ L5 s1 g: D% d& ~" U
"Oh, you found a wallet, and you are going to send it back to the person who lost it?" 9 D5 Z( e. @% ?. A: p ~ j% ]6 v
"Yes, I did."
! H: F% z& g0 J" f% |( C5 ~; TFinally I understood: this dishevelled man found a wallet, and he was going to return it to the owner by post.
8 B Y& o, E" O- q, t e& kHe took the ID card from the wallet, and showed me the address of the loser of the wallet. I saw there were several one-hundred bills in the wallet. 5 l, E" q7 A8 b% q( g I& c9 j
"Are you going to take some money from the wallet to pay the postage?"
) D4 P/ H& `. b5 j4 K"No, I am not. I do not do those things."% K1 F! M* X. v; r4 J, p, t; {
He took out his wallet, which was nearly worn-out, small, and almost empty. There were some coins inside.
6 N5 e4 @: ?0 s: M( cI gave him a bubbled envelope, and instructed him where to write the addresses. He wrote the owner's address, but stopped at writing a return address. He asked:
- F2 o4 U: K; M# P/ N"Is it okay that I do not write this part?") e S! y& v% A' H8 S* }9 U
"Yes, you may." I thought he must want to be a nameless hero. But he said:
" x; U1 U' w2 B; X2 s* d4 i* z"I do not have an address."# n) r/ q' s( M3 l& ?; f' y- m
I was surprised: "oh, where do you live?"
8 F: n A9 o9 K- w" G0 vHe did not look up, and said: "I do not have a home."
3 z" R2 T+ a# f' D7 U( |My heart had a sudden jump. I realized that this is a homeless man who found money but was sending it back to the person who lost it. 1 u) w4 ^" p! F( F& y- c; I
He did not a posses a home, but he had a big heart. He had the precious fortune of being a man of integrity.
