　　North country scene:
                                                                                               
　　A hundred leagues locked in ice,

0 _- M, @! l. y) h% L' i　　A thousand leagues of whirling snow.

$ K8 K/ ?; C9 L, k( M　　Both sides of the Great Wall

　　One single white immensity.
3 X1 E% y2 H1 V0 Q7 s) E
" a, h7 `1 v; u+ v　　The Yellow River"s swift current
, {+ @+ z3 l! g* N
1 t' e: m; _3 o　　Is stilled from end to end.
) z0 c3 ]" Z2 t; j" E( n
. K( Q5 X$ |( ]　　The mountains dance like silver snakes

# N( i# g" v+ j! X" h　　And the highlands* charge like wax-hued elephants,

% v- G" |& w% f3 p! Z　　Vying with heaven in stature.

  @; k- r7 \" a0 g- G　　On a fine day, the land,

6 l/ a. [/ V2 n8 }/ r. p　　Clad in white, adorned in red,

! H# q8 l( G1 R" T) x7 e　　Grows more enchanting.

　　This land so rich in beauty

& ^! ^2 `- |. c- N' f! {- ^　　Has made countless heroes bow in homage.
. ^3 B' c' j- ]9 J% k  }/ ~
) e, Q% }4 x! W; U1 _" l! N6 D' a; K　　But alas! Chin Shih-huang and Han Wu-ti
9 `. z% e0 F- k6 p! V$ H0 e" V
　　Were lacking in literary grace,

! B4 U9 e. _2 G, h. H　　And Tang Tai-tsung and Sung Tai-tsu

5 E, I# c) F' X　　Had little poetry in their souls;
' b9 N% q# S1 V# V" [　　And Genghis Khan,

　　Proud Son of Heaven for a day,

　　Knew only shooting eagles, bow outstretched

0 U. T/ X( n) y) o! g7 M' M7 T　　All are past and gone!

  y+ E) `( m( x0 T. M; i　　For truly great men

# L5 V: Q/ r9 v! j　　Look to this age alone.
