I am Elena Nicoladis, a researcher at the University of Alberta. With graduate student Poliana Barbosa, I, G; v& P- B, L" `4 b& p
am conducting a study titled, “Language, Self-Recognition and Attachment Development: Possible pathways”,
, W/ e: c! v( q8 w P2 Hconcerning babies between 6- and 18- months of age. The purpose of the study is to understand how language and
# \7 T' d7 `* v7 battachment are related. For example, we want to know if babies that are good at relating to people around them% m, ^! ]6 q1 G" v( Q5 ?& p
will acquire language earlier and faster.& E' ~6 Y& K' ^/ I& {

In order to find out, we will videotape you and your baby during a free play situation for approximately
3 D% x% }* ^ y! P9 T0 N30 minutes, at 6, 9, and 12 months of age. We know that babies are unpredictable so if you would like us to stop5 J! g8 Y6 R9 _- g1 p& C! a+ O8 n
videotaping even after we have arrived, we will do so immediately. We can either reschedule for another day or# j0 _ b) @# R3 p' G. T3 N5 t/ Z
simply skip this visit. Every visit, we will ask if we may contact you again for the next visit’s videotaping: you+ {! l, j9 v8 m; V" j8 c
may say no at any time. In the video we will look for cues your baby might use in order to learn words. If your
: J& q/ i! @/ Ybaby starts speaking before 12 months, we will note down the words used.# [' J9 H: b% ^' ?$ n1 Y
7 g2 ~/ T" t% Z y8 R7 b0 W
At 6, 9 and 12 months, we will also ask you to fill out a brief questionnaire with infants’ common
% r7 P- B W! t8 [: H- J, Nbehaviors. You will chose in a scale from 1 to 7 those behaviors that are more descriptive of your baby (7) and
1 `. i2 ?% U+ wthose that a least descriptive (1). This should last about 15 minutes.9 X# U) A. W* B3 z! a* u
7 R5 O" _) l- X1 @5 o( XStarting in the age of 9 months, we you ask you to take note of any word your baby might spontaneously
/ R+ ]+ R1 c; F& t7 @produce. And at 9, 12 and 18 months of age, we will ask you to mark from a list of words any words your baby) O, k6 u* @7 V4 c7 D% v V
knows. We will also give you index cards with infants’ common behaviors and ask you to sort them according to
L3 x+ X5 m' f8 @* jthose behaviors that are more like your baby’s own behaviors. It should take around 30 minutes. U1 G2 h/ F5 G. z) Y: F/ W$ ]( z
: D4 k# E6 L+ j% B5 \8 J* ]2 F
Finally, at 12 and 18 months we will measure your son/daughter language through a standard test. In this,
5 D, t( w" h1 s; X) _) S) Cthe child will basically point to pictures and nominate objects.) C. ]9 n" c2 Z: M! t0 a

The entire study will take maximum twelve months. You will receive a DVD with all the recordings done4 D# v0 \" P# i; U: s* d- l
over the course of the study. In the future, we would like to visit you and your baby one more time, when he/she
. w+ G6 f1 A: U2 n* x9 ]! Dis 24-month old, when we will measure the child’s vocabulary and language development. This last session will
7 ^! A3 S: }0 E7 \take about 30 minutes. If we may contact you to see if you are willing to do this follow-up session, please indicate
2 f+ W" Y& p, ron the next page. If we contact you later on, you may always decide that you no longer wish to participate.
+ h, |' j- n$ a3 i. h& \4 K' KAs a default, all videos and computer files are only accessible to those involved in the research. The data# k8 c t2 ~, b/ R
are stored in a room at the University, with access limited to lab personnel. If you are willing to allow us to show* G9 C/ f! Y; m: g% m
video clips of you and your baby to scientific audiences, please indicate on the next page. No names will be used2 `2 P- P. F1 f# g4 `
in the storing or presenting of information, only codes. The data will be kept for a minimum of five years and- ?) r% K, x! g1 K C( D# v% D3 Q" I
destroyed when no longer in use. The anonymous coded results will be used for research articles, presentations,! F( J; w) c# E0 [8 `3 E5 D
and teaching. Research assistants will comply with the University of Alberta Standards for the Protection of& Z7 F/ B `8 ^; f
Human Research. You are also able to end participation at any time up until we publish the results in scientific2 p$ d7 q/ Y0 ]$ q1 F% m
journals without any repercussions. It is worth to noticed that there is no direct benefits or risks to both the child7 D% O, g1 L+ F+ |" W0 R4 }! N: C
