am conducting a study titled, “Language, Self-Recognition and Attachment Development: Possible pathways”,5 B6 l% Q J: i# C" o1 L
concerning babies between 6- and 18- months of age. The purpose of the study is to understand how language and
: r& Z8 Q6 D0 z$ V8 {5 N5 aattachment are related. For example, we want to know if babies that are good at relating to people around them
' `0 A" H0 P0 r! u& S1 _; Lwill acquire language earlier and faster.9 a! [# I, d& T/ T% ]; c$ {

In order to find out, we will videotape you and your baby during a free play situation for approximately
3 L2 q2 P4 L3 x: G: H2 I30 minutes, at 6, 9, and 12 months of age. We know that babies are unpredictable so if you would like us to stop
2 B2 j' a. Z8 h$ B; |videotaping even after we have arrived, we will do so immediately. We can either reschedule for another day or: e6 S. R: _' n0 l
simply skip this visit. Every visit, we will ask if we may contact you again for the next visit’s videotaping: you
* L/ U3 R) k/ a1 }8 r( Y) y! Omay say no at any time. In the video we will look for cues your baby might use in order to learn words. If your- w, S) ^2 U+ G) W
baby starts speaking before 12 months, we will note down the words used.

5 C9 K+ M, h! q5 z/ X6 g- g! lAt 6, 9 and 12 months, we will also ask you to fill out a brief questionnaire with infants’ common
# s, D: e' K' F/ p8 Gbehaviors. You will chose in a scale from 1 to 7 those behaviors that are more descriptive of your baby (7) and" |- {9 X' F4 J! e
those that a least descriptive (1). This should last about 15 minutes.# d& E5 ?6 ^. g1 {7 I
' g8 R. E4 T) D, S PStarting in the age of 9 months, we you ask you to take note of any word your baby might spontaneously( F; o0 O+ r) w% w
produce. And at 9, 12 and 18 months of age, we will ask you to mark from a list of words any words your baby$ X; z' f# P3 O$ _& [, j
knows. We will also give you index cards with infants’ common behaviors and ask you to sort them according to8 Q6 Q, F, r* R# E. p6 u
those behaviors that are more like your baby’s own behaviors. It should take around 30 minutes.

/ u& r/ m6 n4 P2 R8 bFinally, at 12 and 18 months we will measure your son/daughter language through a standard test. In this,
6 [) s/ B' M; I0 Z8 b+ e' B0 L: dthe child will basically point to pictures and nominate objects.& X7 T- Q5 [! n# y
' { u% B) _( F1 s' {% bThe entire study will take maximum twelve months. You will receive a DVD with all the recordings done0 i+ [6 G* D3 R$ w" I! Z
over the course of the study. In the future, we would like to visit you and your baby one more time, when he/she
$ N- n5 U8 f' H# F/ Q5 I, r- eis 24-month old, when we will measure the child’s vocabulary and language development. This last session will
4 e+ O) p( w. c1 S. dtake about 30 minutes. If we may contact you to see if you are willing to do this follow-up session, please indicate3 L8 r( k [- c7 |: K0 r
on the next page. If we contact you later on, you may always decide that you no longer wish to participate.& D3 q6 P1 J3 E, _
As a default, all videos and computer files are only accessible to those involved in the research. The data: R, g( f5 ^3 S7 O7 y# P8 M- `
are stored in a room at the University, with access limited to lab personnel. If you are willing to allow us to show
# B5 o# ?0 o9 ~" I' O4 Svideo clips of you and your baby to scientific audiences, please indicate on the next page. No names will be used
* W7 q, R% Z" ]: vin the storing or presenting of information, only codes. The data will be kept for a minimum of five years and, ?, O! A6 b; v3 s3 v. O# {
destroyed when no longer in use. The anonymous coded results will be used for research articles, presentations,
. N# I' d3 z6 N6 c7 Xand teaching. Research assistants will comply with the University of Alberta Standards for the Protection of+ o! W' q2 [0 h
Human Research. You are also able to end participation at any time up until we publish the results in scientific+ T0 L% n) @$ w$ _- t
journals without any repercussions. It is worth to noticed that there is no direct benefits or risks to both the child: _" v o6 ~8 ~& ?
