0 L/ O; }1 c% D1 d# D) `I am Elena Nicoladis, a researcher at the University of Alberta. With graduate student Poliana Barbosa, I
Z: K9 o1 @3 s& ~# k# o! y) ]4 j& oam conducting a study titled, “Language, Self-Recognition and Attachment Development: Possible pathways”,6 K2 f2 x" ~! H3 k5 \
concerning babies between 6- and 18- months of age. The purpose of the study is to understand how language and# K# i/ B! h5 P) S* _% C3 M7 p
attachment are related. For example, we want to know if babies that are good at relating to people around them
, N4 [1 o6 p" N' l j, i( ^7 F% ]will acquire language earlier and faster.
; B* O# G, ?$ k5 Q9 c1 S z
$ `1 X4 \. F3 r1 U. \! BIn order to find out, we will videotape you and your baby during a free play situation for approximately
& L, p, l* r+ z4 d30 minutes, at 6, 9, and 12 months of age. We know that babies are unpredictable so if you would like us to stop f& I- [6 V' _ h
videotaping even after we have arrived, we will do so immediately. We can either reschedule for another day or
$ A- {3 ]& R( o' [; B$ Jsimply skip this visit. Every visit, we will ask if we may contact you again for the next visit’s videotaping: you
9 z- t6 m' y) B1 J" j/ Mmay say no at any time. In the video we will look for cues your baby might use in order to learn words. If your
+ c. O6 Z: q- V3 u9 Nbaby starts speaking before 12 months, we will note down the words used.

. k7 c7 E8 q, B% \0 I& NAt 6, 9 and 12 months, we will also ask you to fill out a brief questionnaire with infants’ common
- c9 I) f- u7 Y" F; Q5 e( vbehaviors. You will chose in a scale from 1 to 7 those behaviors that are more descriptive of your baby (7) and
& [3 T |" V# _) T2 e2 H" k. Z! Bthose that a least descriptive (1). This should last about 15 minutes.

5 D& G1 m5 M* B- S, p" bStarting in the age of 9 months, we you ask you to take note of any word your baby might spontaneously
4 | E7 t9 W7 ^! uproduce. And at 9, 12 and 18 months of age, we will ask you to mark from a list of words any words your baby& W. @& c6 l" A: _6 y7 {4 q/ | d
knows. We will also give you index cards with infants’ common behaviors and ask you to sort them according to& y! `' u2 K" O9 B' h
those behaviors that are more like your baby’s own behaviors. It should take around 30 minutes.
: n- b$ M/ a8 O U# H! \; Q0 f2 _0 G+ g8 n( J) C% n- n+ O$ T
Finally, at 12 and 18 months we will measure your son/daughter language through a standard test. In this,
; R+ H1 f+ _5 n. w9 _" y. Pthe child will basically point to pictures and nominate objects.

8 Y0 A9 ^: z; X0 }/ k+ H' nThe entire study will take maximum twelve months. You will receive a DVD with all the recordings done1 i; h6 t* P# ~2 T6 Y( `. C) V1 q' H
over the course of the study. In the future, we would like to visit you and your baby one more time, when he/she3 E8 o k3 E% f, B! E! D
is 24-month old, when we will measure the child’s vocabulary and language development. This last session will
9 b* W2 [ ^' ?3 t" |* ztake about 30 minutes. If we may contact you to see if you are willing to do this follow-up session, please indicate
) F7 v+ h3 U! w0 K( oon the next page. If we contact you later on, you may always decide that you no longer wish to participate.
6 d% A4 g" N( u* mAs a default, all videos and computer files are only accessible to those involved in the research. The data/ _& R9 r* n& m0 J$ r! }
are stored in a room at the University, with access limited to lab personnel. If you are willing to allow us to show
6 X% T `& T) a( }video clips of you and your baby to scientific audiences, please indicate on the next page. No names will be used7 w3 N5 M& ]3 x. d( s* `8 L
in the storing or presenting of information, only codes. The data will be kept for a minimum of five years and
" s# `4 V, f7 ?, fdestroyed when no longer in use. The anonymous coded results will be used for research articles, presentations,
' D1 z, d9 [ w9 f& l6 \2 S9 B4 mand teaching. Research assistants will comply with the University of Alberta Standards for the Protection of: K- I$ k$ h2 r; X0 q* p
Human Research. You are also able to end participation at any time up until we publish the results in scientific. ?; B$ g4 w$ G
journals without any repercussions. It is worth to noticed that there is no direct benefits or risks to both the child" p' \8 ]3 R" u, ]- E% i
