I am Elena Nicoladis, a researcher at the University of Alberta. With graduate student Poliana Barbosa, I2 ^+ Z3 J& Z0 O9 h
am conducting a study titled, “Language, Self-Recognition and Attachment Development: Possible pathways”,
5 Q# a- E* ~! I1 q5 ]concerning babies between 6- and 18- months of age. The purpose of the study is to understand how language and
( _8 R' Y7 p+ t5 I$ K1 G$ L4 Fattachment are related. For example, we want to know if babies that are good at relating to people around them& ^! n L* @: u2 ^% T8 i
will acquire language earlier and faster.' Y( o6 V# o2 g7 u+ R- b: x

In order to find out, we will videotape you and your baby during a free play situation for approximately( G4 b& w: \( H, O5 F" f5 y/ F% j
30 minutes, at 6, 9, and 12 months of age. We know that babies are unpredictable so if you would like us to stop
% A% \$ G* U1 W9 u) S6 O* Yvideotaping even after we have arrived, we will do so immediately. We can either reschedule for another day or2 n5 F4 C4 F( i6 z. b# p/ \' V
simply skip this visit. Every visit, we will ask if we may contact you again for the next visit’s videotaping: you
! J6 C( b2 U4 i- X5 ^) a& rmay say no at any time. In the video we will look for cues your baby might use in order to learn words. If your0 Q0 ~" `: l: q4 Q
baby starts speaking before 12 months, we will note down the words used.$ _: l9 v9 Y) C$ m6 s
$ F" P) ]9 I' _) @ p+ U: @5 [At 6, 9 and 12 months, we will also ask you to fill out a brief questionnaire with infants’ common! R I# s% j6 A/ [. r( [# {
behaviors. You will chose in a scale from 1 to 7 those behaviors that are more descriptive of your baby (7) and0 Y5 A9 v6 T7 B6 ^
those that a least descriptive (1). This should last about 15 minutes.- E9 O0 N* D' u9 w& x7 j
; [ E9 c. W u3 h, N' E$ \Starting in the age of 9 months, we you ask you to take note of any word your baby might spontaneously3 J# C5 b. a( f
produce. And at 9, 12 and 18 months of age, we will ask you to mark from a list of words any words your baby. Y! G, E1 l2 Q7 j0 u
knows. We will also give you index cards with infants’ common behaviors and ask you to sort them according to( @7 J+ Y9 b. F- U D) H' a
those behaviors that are more like your baby’s own behaviors. It should take around 30 minutes. X4 M! Q/ d8 B' t% l' q3 u0 m9 [# T$ l
: q1 A6 B% d2 ?; h5 Z6 {; G8 l, t
Finally, at 12 and 18 months we will measure your son/daughter language through a standard test. In this,0 F' `$ _5 q1 b' l' }8 @3 w
the child will basically point to pictures and nominate objects.

- N, S' m) K, }, d9 r5 I5 G' WThe entire study will take maximum twelve months. You will receive a DVD with all the recordings done

, X2 e7 k, W% k! R( N; g5 ris 24-month old, when we will measure the child’s vocabulary and language development. This last session will

As a default, all videos and computer files are only accessible to those involved in the research. The data; H: q& k3 \, O) }9 c
are stored in a room at the University, with access limited to lab personnel. If you are willing to allow us to show, q) ]8 S/ d" L6 B/ {6 T& [
video clips of you and your baby to scientific audiences, please indicate on the next page. No names will be used$ c' ~% [! c6 D, x! y
in the storing or presenting of information, only codes. The data will be kept for a minimum of five years and
, {6 E) o( X) _# J) I1 I$ wdestroyed when no longer in use. The anonymous coded results will be used for research articles, presentations,- O: @- [) h+ _* l6 N. H: Q$ ]- B
and teaching. Research assistants will comply with the University of Alberta Standards for the Protection of
